75. [FRANCE] Jean-Antoine Tinseau (1697-1782) French prelate. Tinseau earned a doctorate in theology from the University of Besançon and canon and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Besançon.  In 1743 he became commendatory abbot of Bitaine and in 1745 Bishop of Belley. He was transferred to the diocese of Nevers in 1751. In 1760 Tinseau built a new episcopal palace and in 1762 he replaced by secular priests Jesuits at college and seminary.  ALS, Nevers, 1782, 2pp, approx. 6-1/4 x 7-3/4".  VG.........60-80

79 [CHEMISTRY] Antique wood-engraved portrait of Jons Jacob Berzelius(1779-1848) Swedish chemist. Berzelius is considered, along with Robert Boyle, John Dalton, and Antoine Lavoisier, to be one of the founders of modern chemistry. Berzelius became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1808 and served from 1818 as its principal functionary. He is known in Sweden as the "Father of Swedish Chemistry". Berzelius Day is celebrated on 20 August in honour of him. Original engraving c. 1836, paper size approx. 8 x 5 in. which includes margins. Very good condition. Scarce!. 80. [GERMANY] a pair of antique wood-engraved portraits. (1) Karl Ferdinand Friedrich von Nagler (1770-1846) In 1805, he started to collect objects of art. In 1811–1821, he travelled in different countries. It was during these years that the main part of his collection was formed. Nagler collected paintings, drawings, prints, coins, medals, ethnographic objects and Egyptian antiquities. In 1835, he sold the main part of his collection (but not paintings) to the state. Old master prints from his collection became a very important part of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. After Nagler’s death in 1847 the rest of his collection, including paintings, drawings and old master prints, was sold in Berlin. (2) Also a portrait of Jean Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825)  German Romantic writer, best known for his humorous novels and stories. Paper size for each is about 8 x 5 in.  These date to c. 1836. 81. [POSTAL HISTORY] Wilson Barrett (1846-1904)  English manager, actor, and playwright. With his company, Barrett is credited with attracting the largest crowds of English theatregoers ever because of his success with melodrama, an instance being his production of The Silver King (1882) at the Princess's Theatre of London. The historical tragedy The Sign of the Cross (1895) was Barrett's most successful play, both in England and in the United States. 82. [VERMONT] An 1811 partly-printed document signed by Pascal P. Enos Sr. (1770-1832) American pioneer. He is known chiefly as one of the four original proprietors of Springfield, Illinois. He was born at Windsor, Connecticut, in the year 1770, and in 1815 was married to Salome Paddock, of Woodstock, Vermont. He graduated at Dartmouth College in 1794, studied law, and after spending some years in Vermont, where he served as High Sheriff of Windsor County, Vermont. Soon after his marriage he went west to Cincinnati, Ohio, but did not remain there long. In the spring of 1817 he came to St. Louis, Missouri, then, in 1821, he moved to Madison county, Illinois. While residing there, upon the recommendation of the Vermont delegation in congress, Mr. Enos was appointed by President Monroe to be receiver of the land office at Springfield, Illinois. He reached this place with his family, in September, 1823, and opened office in a double log cabin at the corner of what is now Third and Jefferson streets. In November of that year he united with Major Hes, Thomas Cox, and John Taylor, in laying out a town site, since known as Springfield. Mr. Enos retained the office of receiver until General Jackson became president in 1829, when he resigned, and devoted his time to land transaction and mercantile pursuits. He died in 1832, leaving a large landed estate, and was survived by his wife and four children. 13-1/4 x 7-3/4 in............125-175

83. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. 85. [ART] Salvatore Grippi (1921-2017) important American artist. One of the underrepresented figurative expressionist members of the New York School featured in Herskovic’s book is Salvatore Grippi, who was born in 1921 in Buffalo. After participating in the major invasions in Europe during World War II, Grippi came back to New York and attended the Art Students League under the G.I. Bill from 1945 to 1948. From 1951 to 1953, Grippi was at Atelier 17, the famous printmaking studio run by British artist Stanley William Hayter, who taught printmaking to Pollock and Rothko, among many other abstract expressionists. Grippi would later contribute an etching to the well-known portfolio Twenty-One Etchings and Poems [1958], including work by such artists and poets as Frank O’Hara, Franz Kline, Grippi’s brother Peter Grippe, and Dylan Thomas. From 1953 to 1955, Grippi worked in Florence, Italy, with the support of a Fulbright Scholarship. He taught for several years at the Cooper Union Art School before moving to California to teach at Pomona College. In 1968, Grippi was asked to start the art department at Ithaca College and taught there until 1991. Grippi, who worked and exhibited alongside the likes of de Kooning, Nevelson, and Kline during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s.  In 2011, he was honored with a solo retrospective at Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art.  He was a significant figure in postwar abstraction and his work from this period has graced the walls of MoMA, the Whitney, and the Met but has seldom appeared at auction. 86. [From Mickey Spillane Papers] Bob Fellows (1903-1969) American film producer who was once a production partner with John Wayne and later with Mickey Spillane. TLS, May 2, 1956, 1p, approx. 8.5 x 11 in. To Mickey Spillane. This letter has good content.  He talks in a negative way about Victor Saville  (1896-1979)  English film director, producer, and screenwriter who directed 39 films between 1927 and 1954. He also produced 36 films between 1923 and 1962. As an independent producer he had purchased the film rights to A. J. Cronin's novel The Citadel. He was persuaded to sell them to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in return for the chance to produce the film and another big-budget adaptation, Goodbye Mr Chips (1939). Both films starred Robert Donat and were a great success in the USA as well as in Britain, providing Saville with a passport to Hollywood. After the war Saville continued directing films for MGM but eventually returned to Britain. Saville acquired production rights for Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer mysteries and produced a few features, though Spillane thought he as interested in doing so only to acquire the money to produce The Silver Chalice. 87. [MAINE]  Samuel Freeman (1743-1831) was a prominent citizen of Portland, Maine during the 18th and 19th centuries. He was instrumental in founding the first public library in Portland (then Falmouth), Maine, served in the judiciary system as judge and clerk, as well as held the post of the first postmaster of Portland, in 1775. He was an active patriot during the Revolutionary struggle, was secretary of the Cumberland County convention in 1774, a member of the provincial congress in 1775, and of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1776 and 1778. When the courts were reorganized in 1775 he was appointed clerk, which office he held for forty-five years. He was register of probate until commissioned judge in 1804, remaining in the latter office till 1820. From 1776 till 1805 he was postmaster of Portland. He was an active and efficient friend of Bowdoin College, His publications include "The Massachusetts Justice" (1803); and " Probate Directory" (1803); and he edited the "Journal of Rev. 88. [THEATRE] Katharine Cornell (1893-1974) American stage actress, writer, theater owner and producer. Dubbed "The First Lady of the Theatre" by critic Alexander Woollcott, Cornell was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award, for Romeo and Juliet in 1935. Cornell is noted for her major Broadway roles in serious dramas, often directed by her husband, Guthrie McClintic. The couple formed C. & M.C. Productions, Inc., a company that gave them complete artistic freedom in choosing and producing plays. Offered here are 3 items from her estate: (1) Her EXXON credit card made out to her married name K.C. [BRITISH NAVAL]  James Young (1717-1789) was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, rising to the rank of admiral of the white. Young was advanced to flag rank towards the end of the Seven Years' War, being promoted to rear-admiral on 21 October 1762. Further promotions followed, he attained the rank of vice-admiral on 28 October 1770, and became commander-in-chief in the Leeward Islands Station in April 1775. He raised his flag aboard the 50-gun HMS Portland and sailed to take up his post on 26 April.  The American War of Independence broke out during Young's time in command, and he was tasked with using his small naval force to interdict the supply of arms and gunpowder to rebel forces, and to defend British trade from American privateers and warships. He struggled to combat the delivery of weapons to the Americans. His squadron had too few fast cruisers, and the Americans were being openly supplied from the neutral Caribbean possessions, from the Dutch-held St Eustatius and the French at Martinique. His squadron captured 205 American merchant ships and captured or destroyed seventeen American privateers and warships. 93. Payson Williston (1764-1856) First Minister at Easthampton, Ma. . Payson was born in West Haven CT. and was the son of Rev. Noah Williston and Hannah Payson. He entered the ministery under the teachings of Dr. Trumball of New Haven CT. and attend Yale College from 1779 through 1783. Before he entered college he spent a short spell in a Militia fighting in the Revolutionary war. Payson was licensed to preach at twenty one years of age, but did not settle into his final role of Pastor of Easthampton until he was twenty six. He became the first Pastor of Easthampton on Aug 13 , 1789, when he was ordained with his father present. He spent forty years as Pastor of Easthampton. In 1790 he married Sarah Birdseye, daughter of Rev. Nathan Birdseye of Stratford CT. Together they had five children; Maria, John Payson, Samuel, Nathan Birdseye and Sarah. In 1805 he traveled to the settlements in New York to teach his ministries and in 1833 at the age of seventy requested to be relieved of his duties as Pastor of Easthampton, which he was granted. Payson past on at the age of ninety two, on January 30th, 1856.  Payson Williston, was the minister in Easthampton’s only church.  Payson was a stern, old-fashioned New England preacher, with strong Calvinist leanings.  Offered here is a 1846, 3pp, folded stampless letter from Payson Williston to his son Nathan B. 94. Sam Bartlett (1752-1821) American patriot, and a noted silversmith from Concord, Mass. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Bible Society, a member of the Cambridge Humane Society, and also from 1795-1820 the elected Register of Deeds for Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Deafened by cannon fire during the Boston massacre, he gave up his acedemic studies and became a smith. He worked from circa 1775 to 1795 as a silversmith in Concord Mass.. Although he worked in the town for two decades, Bartlett's most active period in Concord seems to have been between 1785 and 1795. With the aid of journeyman silversmith Joseph Lasinby Brown, of Concord, Bartlett executed communion silver commissions for three towns in Middlesex County, and produced domestic silver for resale and wholesale markets. At the end of the period, he was elected register of deeds for Middlesex County and moved to Cambridge, retiring from the role of silversmith. Bartlett marked 12 pieces of communion silver, including three flagons, one tankard and eight cups. About 25 pieces of Bartlett's domestic hollowware are known, including canns, porringers, creampots, and a unique miniature teapot. In addition, Bartlett marked teaspoons, tablespoons, ladles, and shoe buckles. Offered here is a 1820 Charlestown, Mass. document concerning Henry Van Voorhees of Charlestown Morocco manufacturer. 95. [KENTUCKY PIONEER DOCUMENT] Rare Commonwealth of Kentucky, Hardin County manuscript document, dated 1803, signed by at least 3 significant Kentucky pioneers. Written and signed by Ben Helm(1767-1858). He was a
surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts; major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was apartner, in the general store business, with Duff Green [later statesman] in the early frontier days of Kentucky. It is likely that young Abe Lincoln visited his store often in his early youth. Helm signs on the front and back side. Also signed on verso by Charles Helm [1777-1821 or 1831 [?] - a merchant, politician, soldier. He served for many years in the state legislature and was said to be the most popular man in Hardin County. During the War of 1812, he was in Col. Aaron Hart’s company, a mounted force, each man furnishing his own horse, gun, ammunition, & rations for himself & horse. In very good condition with light toning along folds. Also signed on verso by Sam. Haycraft Sr. (1752-1823) Revolutionary War Private (1776-79). Samuel Haycraft was a soldier for 2 years and 6 months in 13th Virginia and one year with Thomas Morris' Light Infantry. Enlisted from Hardin County, Kentucky and was granted pension June 20, 1820.  Employed young Thomas Lincoln (later father of Abraham Lincoln) as a carpenter to help build a mill. Sam Haycraft also served, at various times, as county sheriff, judge, and state legislator.  Approx. 6-1/2 x 5 in. Excellent condition................150-250

The store was opened in a log house at the corner of the Public Square.  He was engaged in the rebellion in Ireland in 1798. He evaded Government officers by concealing himself in a vessel and thus made his escape to the United States. Bleakley remained some years after Montgomery left town, and acted as sheriff for several years, and then settled on a farm and died about 1850, leaving a large family.  There is something romantic and interesting in the history of these two men. Born on the same island, engaged in the same rebellion, both compelled to leave to save their lives; emigrating to the same country, finding employment in the same establishment in Baltimore, partners in merchandising in Elizabethtown, marrying sisters, and then living and dying on adjacent farms.  It was in their general store that Tom Lincoln[Abe Lincoln's father] purchased many items when he was courting Nanc Hanks [mother of the future president]. 100. [KENTUCKY PIONEER]  1807 Hardin County [Kentucky] document signed by Samuel Givens. Robert Bleakley and William Montgomery appeared before Justice of the Peace Samuel Givens concerning a debt owned to them by Hensby Reed. Signed on the verso by Saml. Perrcifull.  Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. Partly separated at middle fold otherwise in very good + condition. Not signed by Bleakley or Montgomery. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY was born near Aucknaclay, Ireland in 1776 and fled to America. arriving in Hardin County, Kentucky about 1801. With another Irishman, Robert Bleakley, opened a store in Elizabethtown. Their establishment is said to have been the first such operation in the pioneer village that could ready be called a "store." Montgomery was an Orangeman, who was engaged in the rebellion In Ireland in 1798. He was arrested and confined in a prison from which men were taken and executed daily He was released from prison through the efforts of his aunt, who was married to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on the condition that he would emigrate to America.  Wm. Montgomery and Bleakley opened a dry goods store. In 1806 they hired the father of Abraham Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat down the Mississippi river with their merchan°dise to be sold in New Orleans. They paid Tom Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit of 13 pounds in gold. Their store account  books show Tom Lincoln buying “two twists of tobacco & one pint of whisky.” And the books also show that in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying spree, purchasing silk, linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons, etc. Earlier that year he had purchased an aristocratic beaver hat & a pair of silk suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this time, courting his future bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln’s mother]. After the wedding he made his home in a cabin close to the courthouse in Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their store, knives, forks, spoons, thread, needles, silk & tobacco.................Min. Bid $100

102. [DEMOCRAT PARTY]  Dorothy S. McAllister (1899-1983) born Grand Rapids, Michigan, she was one of the most important women on the Democratic National Committee. From 1937 to 1941, during the second administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mrs. McAllister served as the director of the Women's Division of the Democratic National Committee. In this capacity, she gave speeches throughout the country in support of the New Deal and Roosevelt. She was also strongly involved in the Division's "Reporter Plan," a system designed to make the average citizen more aware of policies and activities of the Roosevelt Administration. Mrs. McAllister resigned her political positions when President Roosevelt appointed her husband a federal judge. Soon thereafter, she accepted a Presidential appointment to the Volunteer Participation Committee in the 6th Army Corps Area Office of Civilian Defense. 103. Ibrahim Nasir  (1926-2008)  Maldivian politician who served as the Prime Minister of the Maldives 1957 to 1968 and later President from 1968 to 1978.  Ibrahim Nasir a brutal dictator, was sworn in as the second President of the Republic of Maldives on 11 November 1968. He was the mastermind behind committing state sponsored terrorism in the island of Thinadhoo. Violently forced the inhabitants of the island to leave the island in a few hours. [FRANCE] Leon Dufourny (1754-1818) French architect  whose works belong to the neo-classical movement of the late eighteenth century.  Leon Dufourny was Commissioner of the French Republic to the King of Naples and made ​​a trip to Sicily from 1787 to 1794 to study the ancient temples Greek.  In 1796 Dufourny was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts and was also appointed Chairman of the Committee of the Fund and the Central administrative board of the Institute of France, and Nivôse Ventôse Year XII (1802).  Around 1800, he seized the castle of Richelieu, confiscated during the Revolution as many emigrated, had been emptied of its furniture collections and then stripped of its materials - before being demolished - the rectangular tray mosaic marble and hard stone of a ceremonial table, completed after a carved wooden base, and preserved from the Louvre (Galerie d'Apollon); a color lithograph nineteenth century this exceptional furniture and a replica of his legs are kept at the Museum of Fine Arts Tours.  ALS, 1806, 1p., approx. 5-1/2 x 5-3/4 in.........100-150

She was the maternal grandmother of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, respectively second and sixth in the line of succession to the British throne. 107. [PIONEER KENTUCKY]  Col. Joseph Barnett (1730 or 31 - 1795) an early pioneer in Kentucky who built Barnett's Station, one of the earliest forts erected near Severns Valley, Kentucky. He was also one of the founders and preacher of Regular Baptist Church of Severns Valley [Elizabethtown, KY], the oldest Baptist church in Kentucky. Barnett's Station was established by brothers Joseph and Alexander Barnett who came from Virginia to Kentucky in early 1780s. Settlement was frequently raided by Indians. During an attack in April 1790, two children were killed and Hanna Barnett, the ten-year-old daughter of Joseph, was carried off and held captive for six months.  He was also one of the first judges in Elizabethtown. He, with his brother Robert, was at Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. His brother Robert was killed there.  When the Revolutionary War came on some twenty years later he entered the northern wing of the army. He was in the Battle of Yorktown (October, 1781) and there met up with his brother Alexander. After some discussion they made arrangements to come to Kentucky. The following year they met at the fort where Elizabethtown now stands. To quote from Haycraft’s History "Honorable Judge Joseph Barnett . . . lived near Hartford, and traveled upwards of seventy‑five miles to sit in court. He did indeed possess a large landed estate ‑-27,934 acres at the time of his death. He was a dealer in lands on a large scale, Jefferson County (then Virginia) entries alone totaling 155,370 acres, and the early records of Nelson and Hardin Counties are full of land transactions to which he was a party. 108.  Floyd Dell [1887-1969] Am. journalist, novelist. In 1908 Dell moved on to Chicago where he became editor of the Friday Literary Review and a leader of the Chicago Renaissance. In his position at FLR, Dell promoted the work of Theodore Dreiser, Sherwood Anderson, Carl Sandburg and other Chicago writers. Relocating to New York in 1913, Dell became managing editor of Max Eastman's radical magazine The Masses, and a leader of the pre-war bohemian community in Greenwich Village. 116. [FRANCE] Jerome Marie Champion of Cice (1735-1810) Ordained priest in 1761, he was Bishop of Rodez from 1770 to 1781 and Archbishop of Bordeaux from 1781 to 1801. He emigrated to England during the Revolution. After the Concordat of 1801, he was archbishop of Aix and Arles from 1802 to 1810. On his return from exile in 1802, Eugene immediately became acquainted with the archbishop and befriended him. Louis XVI selected Champion de Cice, in place of Barantin, as keeper of the seals; an office which, since the times of Cardinal de Biragnd, who had done so much harm to France (1570-78), no minister had ever held. This nomination displeased many of the extreme parties; but Champion maintained his position from 1789 till November, 1790, when he resigned it, having, meanwhile, addressed to the national assembly several memoirs on the royal prerogatives. Afterwards the archbishop of Bordeaux was obliged to go into foreign countries (being in danger of persecution), where he lived ten years; but this exile ended by his submission to pope Pius VII, after which he was appointed archbishop of Aix, by the first consul, and directed all his attention to the erection of charitable establishments and schools. He was the author of the draft declaration of rights in 24 articles which served as a basis for the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen of 1789. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (French: D_claration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen de 1789), set by France's National Constituent Assembly in 1789, is a human civil rights document from the French Revolution. The Declaration was drafted by the Abb_ Sieys and the Marquis de Lafayette, in consultation with Thomas Jefferson. Influenced by the doctrine of "natural right", the rights of man are held to be universal: valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. It became the basis for a nation of free individuals protected equally by the law. It is included in the beginning of the constitutions of both the Fourth French Republic (1946) and Fifth Republic (1958) and is still current. Inspired by the Enlightenment philosophers, the Declaration was a core statement of the values of the French Revolution and had a major impact on the development of freedom and democracy in Europe and worldwide. 133. [SPACE] WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Offered here is an original color photo of James McDivitt (b. 1929)  NASA astronaut who flew in the Gemini and Apollo programs. He commanded the Gemini 4 flight during which Ed White performed the first U.S. spacewalk, and later the Apollo 9 flight which was the first crewed flight test of the Lunar Module and the complete set of Apollo flight hardware. He later became Manager of Lunar Landing Operations and was the Apollo Spacecraft Program Manager from 1969 to 1972.  Whisenhant has written at the bottom "McDivitt." 136.  [NAZI PERSECUTION] the following letters are from the personal papers of Frederick Solomon (1899-1980). Dr. Frederick K. “Fritz” Solomon (originally Solomonski) was born in Berlin, Germany in 1899. In 1938, when the synagogue he was serving at was torched by Nazis and he was subsequently summoned by the Gestapo, he fled Germany with his wife, Margot, and emigrated to England. While still in Europe, Solomon had studied art under the German-Jewish artists Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg and Eugene Spiro, and German expressionist Willy Jaeckel. In England, he continued his artistic career, exhibiting his religious and expressionistic work at various galleries throughout the country, including the Royal Academy and the Kensington Art Gallery in London, where he had a one-man show. His work is in the permanent collections of the Courtauld Institute, the Bazalel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Ben Uri Art Gallery St. John’s Wood, London (now incorporating the London Jewish Museum of Art). He was the curator of this latter gallery from 1943 to 1946. In 1954, Solomon left England to take up a position as rabbi for Temple Beth Ha Shalom in Williamsport, PA. After three years in Pennsylvania, he sought another position and, as a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, was appointed rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in the Vedado suburb of Havana, where he wrote sermons and hosted religious services for his congregation, a part of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Solomon was also active in the Jewish Progressive movement, frequently communicating with representatives of The World Union for Progressive Judaism throughout the 1950s in an attempt to officially associate his congregation with the organization. Dr. Solomon left Havana in 1960 and relocated to Laconia, N.H., where he served as rabbi at Temple B’nai Israel until 1963. He and his wife then moved to Rochester, N.H. in 1963, where he opened the New English Art Gallery and Studio. In his later years, Solomon served as the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, New Hampshire. He died in in 1980. Offered here is a collection of letters written to Frederick Solomon.  It includes items sent to Solomon from The United Restitution Organization (URO) that was established in 1948 as a legal aid service to assist victims of Nazi persecution living outside Germany in making restitution and indemnification claims against Germany and Austria. The URO has served over 250,000 clients. It helped Jews, Roma, and other victims of Nazi crimes. At its most expansive, the URO maintained 29 offices in 15 countries around the world. British barrister Norman Bentwich was the chairman of the URO board from 1948 until his death in 1971, and Kurt May, a German-born lawyer who had fled the Nazis in 1934 after he defended a leading Social Democrat wrongly accused of being a Communist, served as its director from the early 1950s until 1990. INCLUDES a TLS, 1939 signed by Alexander J. Burnstein (1900-1980) Rabbi who was born in  Kiev, Ukraine and, after making his way to the United States, graduated from Northwestern University. On December 1, 1938, upon the successful arrangement of this position by Cyrus Adler (who had presided over Burnstein's ordination less than a decade before), became the executive secretary of the Advisory Committee on Refugee Jewish Ministers from 1938 to 1942. Burnstein was one of two Jews, both rabbis (the other being Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel), who contributed to a volume celebrating the lifework of Reinhold Niebuhr.[20] Burnstein, a Jewish "admirer" of Niebuhr, wrote of his disagreement with Niebuhr in focusing on teshuvah rather than original sin in understanding human behavior. 152. [FRANCE] Jean-Barthélémy Hauréau (1812-1896) French historian and writer. Born in Paris, he was educated at the Louis-le-Grand and Bourbon colleges in his native city, and won high honours at his public examination. After graduating he became a journalist, and soon was a contributor to several democratic papers: La Tribune, Le National, Le Droit, and La Revue du Nord; at Le National, he was praised by Théophile Gautier as the "tribune" of romanticism. At the age of twenty he published a series of apologetic studies on the Montagnards &emdash; in later years, regretting his youthful enthusiasm, he attempted to destroy the studies. In 1838 he took the chief editorship of the Courrier de la Sarthe and was appointed librarian of the city of Le Mans , which position he retained until 1845, when he was dismissed on account of comments of his on the daring speech of the Mayor of le Mans to the Duke of Nemours. He returned to Paris and once more became one of the editors of Le National. At this time he seemed destined for a political career, and after the revolution of February 24, 1848 was elected to the National Assembly; but close contact with revolutionary men and ideas cooled his old ardour. Throughout his life he opposed innovation, not only in politics and religion, but also in literature. After the coup d'état he resigned his position as director of the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale , to which he had been appointed in 1848, and refused to accept an administrative post until after the fall of the empire. Having acted as director of the national printing press from 1870 to 1881, he retired, but in 1893 accepted the post of director of the Fondation Thiers. He was also a member of the council of improvement of the École des Chartes. From the time of his appointment to the Bibliothèque Nationale up to the last days of his life he was engaged in making abstracts of all the medieval Latin writings (many anonymous or of doubtful attribution) relating to philosophy, theology, grammar, Canon law, and poetry, carefully noting on cards the first words of each passage. After his death this index of incipits , arranged alphabetically, was presented to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and a copy was placed in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale. ALS, 188?. written on both sides of 4-1/2 x 7" page. Includes a small ink drawing [man's head on one side and women's on the other side]. We assume the drawing is by Haureau. 155.  Marta Mitrovich  (1909-2002) American poet and actress. Born in Yugoslavia, Mitrovich lived in London during World War II and the Blitz, relocating in 1941 to the US, where her career as a stage and screen actress included the 1953 version of Titanic. In the mid-1970s (the actual date varies depending on whom you talk to) she founded the current incarnation of Laguna Poets, California’s longest running weekly poetry series, bringing major poets like Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others to read in Orange County. Mitrovich’s passion for poetry was the spark that ignited Laguna Poets and the dozens of readings that imitated it (knowingly and unknowingly) around Orange County and LA, and was matched only by her passion for free speech. (In the 1950s, she told the House UnAmerican Activities Committee to “stuff it.”).  Mitrovich retired in to Garbo-like seclusion in 1990, disappearing near-entirely.  ALS on postal card, 1972, signed "Marta."  Poetry content.............50-75

156. [THEATRE] Leon Volterra - larger-than-life theatre impressario from Paris. Known also for his stable of race horses and the Chateau Volterra in Saint-Tropez. The origins of Chateau Volterra are marvelously shrouded in mystery and touched with romance. It is generally accepted that construction of the Chateau began in 1906, took six years to build. In 1926, the property passed into the hands of Monsieur Leon Volterra, a larger-than-life theatre impressario from Paris who, during a visit to Saint-Tropez (already a gathering place for the stars of the day) was swept off his feet by Simone, a fisherman's daughter. They were married within the year. Monsieur Volterra was manager of four theatres in Paris: the Casino de Paris, the Theatre de Paris, the Theatre Marigny and the Lido. He also orchestrated the careers of stars Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier, directed the Folies Bergere, created the Luna Park at Porte-Maillot and owned a stable of race horses. In its heyday the 1930s and early 1940s Chateau Volterra saw a constant flow of well-known actors and artists, several of whom were semi-resident, and a stream of spectacular-looking chorus girls. Among the celebrity guests were Raimu, Josphine Baker, Colette and Jean Cocteau. The war years brought frequent visits from prominent figures of the Resistance. Interesting letter about how the theatre tickets control was done by Societe des Auteurs, a French professional association collecting payments of artists' rights and distributing the rights to the to the original songwriters, composers, and music publishers. 158. [TAFT-HARTLEY BILL]  Philip J. Philbin (1898-1972) Democratic U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts. From 1917 until 1919, during the First World War, served as a seaman in the United States Navy. In 1942, as the Democratic nominee, Philbin was elected to the 78th United States Congress and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1943 - January 3, 1971).  At the very end of the 91st United States Congress, he served as chairman of the Committee on Armed Services, due to the death of L. Mendel Rivers on December 28, 1970. Offered here are 3 typed pages of a speech made before congress against passage of the Taft-Hartley Bill.  All of the ink notationa & handwriting on the pages was made by Philbin. 159. [ENGLAND] Charles Lloyd (1784-1829), Regius Professor of Divinity and Bishop of Oxford from 1827 to 1829. Eventually he had to leave and took a job as a tutor to Lord Elgin's children at Dunfermline. This didn't last long as he was asked to return to Oxford to teach mathematics. One of his first jobs was to prepare Robert Peel for his exams. Peel later became prime minister. Charles Lloyd soon gained a reputation as an effective teacher. 160. [WORLD WAR 2] Dr. Ralph D. Bennett (1900-1994) His career was varied and most distinguished. He served as a professor of physics at M. I.T; as a naval officer, responsible for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington; and director of the Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory near Livermore, Calif., for the General Electric Co. He subsequently became V.P. and director of research for Martin Marietta. Dr. Bennett was a man uniquely placed to bring about significant changes in the way the Navy handled its research and development in those early years. Having both a Captain's rank and a respected technical background, he played a major role in the development of the Military-civilian partnership at NOL, and saw its use accepted universally in the rest of the Navy's R&D management. The Navywide system of Commander/Technical Director management owes its origins to Dr. Bennett. Offered here is an ink signed memorandum from Bennett to Capt. L.W. 162.  [JUDAICA] Lilian Helen "Lily" Montagu, CBE (1873-1963) was the first woman to play a major role in Progressive or Reform Judaism.  Her father,  founder of Samuel Montagu & Co., was a self-made millionaire by 1871. He was a Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1900 as the MP for Whitechapel, a poor district of the East End of London. In 1907, Montagu was raised to the peerage as Baron Swaythling.  She grew up in a pious Orthodox Jewish home, in an ethos of privilege and philanthropy, devoted to helping the poor and advancing Jewish institutions. Her eldest brother, Louis, was also a financier and political activist, founding the League of British Jews to lobby against the creation of the state of Israel.  In 1893 she founded the West Central Jewish Girls Club (which subsequently merged into the Jewish Girls' Brigade). She was active in social improvement, particularly in respect to unemployment, sweat shops and bad housing. In 1901 and 1902, Montagu was to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the Jewish Religious Union in London. The Union set up the first synagogue in Liberal Judaism in the UK and helped found the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Following the retirement of Leo Baeck, Montagu served for a brief stint (1955–1959) in her 80s as president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, before handing the reins over to Solomon Freehof.  TLS signed “Lily H. 164. [ART] Judith Zilczer - American art historian and former museum curator. She is known for her work with artists such as Horace Pippin, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Willem de Kooning, and Richard Lindner. Zilczer was interested in the connections between music and art, which she described as "the mystical strain of artistic synesthesia."  She curated an exhibit titled "Visual Music: Synaesthesia in Art and Music Since 1900".[4][5] Zilczer served at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG) in various capacities from 1974-2003. 165. [ART] Lawrence B. "Larry" Salander (born 1949) is a former New York City art dealer.  His company, the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, was cited by the Robb Report in 2003 as the best gallery in the world.  By late 2007, Salander had been sued by numerous customers and business partners who claimed that Salander and his company had defrauded them.  In November 2007, Salander filed for personal bankruptcy, listing John McEnroe among his creditors. Offered here is a letter dated 1984, 1p,  sending money to the Estate of Walt Kuhn for a Kuhn painting sold for $35,000 to Tommy LiPuma.  Tommy LiPuma (1936-2017) was an American music producer. He received 33 Grammy nominations, 5 Grammy wins, and his productions sold over 75 million albums.  LiPuma worked with many musicians, including Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, George Benson, Phil Upchurch, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole, Claudine Longet, Dave Mason, the Yellowjackets, the Sandpipers, Michael Franks, Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Ben Sidran, The Crusaders, Joe Sample, Randy Crawford and Dr. John.  Signed Lawrence.  An interesting piece of art history.  File holes otherwise very good..........100-150..............Min. 166. [NAVAL HISTORY] Admiral George James Perceval, 6th Earl of Egmont (1794-1874), known as the Lord Arden between 1840 and 1841, was a British naval commander and Tory politician. Egmont left Harrow school and was commissioned into the Royal Navy as a powder monkey in August 1805 and fought in the H. M. S. Orion in the Battle of Trafalgar the same year, aged eleven. During the Bombardment of Algiers in 1816 he commanded the H. M. S. Infernal. 167. [Gen. Richard Delafield] 1880 document, New York, Receipt from Trustees of the Estate of Richard Delafield deceased, from Harriet [wife], Susan and Albert. Richard Delafield (September 1, 1798 – November 5, 1873) was a United States Army officer for 52 years. He served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy for 12 years. At the start of the American Civil War, then Colonel Delafield helped equip and send volunteers from New York to the Union Army. He also was in command of defenses around New York harbor from 1861 to April 1864. On April 22, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General in the Regular Army of the United States and Chief of Engineers. On March 8, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Delafield for appointment to the grade of brevet major general in the Regular Army, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on May 4, 1866, reconfirmed due to a technicality on July 14, 1866. He retired from the US Army on August 8, 1866. He later served on two commissions relating to improvements to Boston Harbor and to lighthouses. Mary Elizabeth would emerge as an important part of Bryan's career, managing his correspondence and helping him prepare speeches and articles. 171. [ART] Charles Henry White  (1878-1918) was born at Hamilton, Ontario, and was educated partly in Europe and partly in the United States. He studied for a time at the Art Student League in New York City, working at illustrations and especially pen drawing. It was Joseph Pennell, the prominent American etcher, whom Mr. White met in Venice, Italy, in 1901, who induced him to take up etching. Through Lawford, who was married to Patricia Kennedy, a sister of John F. Kennedy's, Mr. Ebbins became a favorite of JFK's and a frequent guest at the White House and on Air Force One. At Kennedy's 45th birthday party in 1962, Mr. Ebbins gave Marilyn Monroe a push onstage at Madison Square Garden as she went out to sing her sultry version of "Happy Birthday." 188. [GERMANY] ALEXANDER von KLUCK (1846-1934) German general during World War I. He enlisted in the Prussian army in time to serve in the seven-week Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War, where he was wounded twice in the Battle of Colombey-Neuilly, and awarded the Iron Cross (second class) for bravery.  He was made a general of infantry in 1906, and in 1913 was appointed Inspector General of the Seventh Army District. With the outbreak of World War I, Kluck was placed in command of the German First Army. According to the Moltke revisions of the Schlieffen Plan, the First Army was part of the strong right wing and positioned on the outer western edge of the German advance through Belgium and France. Offered here is a envelope addressed by him with his signature on the verso in return address. About 6 x 4-3/4 in. He studied with the influential painters and theorists of his day, including Arthur Wesley Dow, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, Abbott Thayer, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. A transcendentalist and mystic, Kent painted remote and austere lands, including Newfoundland (1914-15), Tierra del Fuego (1922-23), and Greenland (1929; 1931-32; 1934-35). Shelton (1929-2003) was a former car-tire salesman and printer who became nationally famous as the Imperial Wizard of United Klans of America (UKA), a Ku Klux Klan group. Card signed on which he pens "For our God & Country '66". On other side os picture of Confederate flag. (2) Herbert W.  Christenberry(1897-1975)  United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

In 1958, he ordered racial desegregation of the admission practices of Louisiana State University in New Orleans. In 1965, he ordered the Bogalusa, Louisiana police department to protect civil rights demonstrators instead of harassing, arresting, or leaving them to be beaten by onlookers. Time Magazine reported that he directed the defendants that "you should do everything under the law to guarantee the constitutional rights of Negroes," and he chided the townspeople for appearing to fly nothing but Confederate flags rather than the American flag. In 1970, he ordered the racial desegregation of the local AFL-CIO asbestos workers union. In 1971, he enjoined Orleans Parish District Attorney Jim Garrison from continuing to prosecute Clay L. Shaw for alleged perjury and other criminal charges after Garrison's unsuccessful trial of Shaw for conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy on grounds that Garrison was engaging in unconstitutional prosecutorial misconduct. Time Magazine described Judge Christenberry as "a tough old bird [who] has not been notable for taking any guff from anyone." 196. [VERMONT] Benj. Swan (1762-1839) was an American merchant, banker and politician. He was an important political figure in Vermont and served as State Treasurer.A Federalist, Swan served in local offices including Postmaster. He served as Justice of the Peace when holders of that office still heard court cases. He was also active in the militia, and achieved the rank of Major.In 1796 Swan was appointed County Clerk, an office in which he served until his death. Swan was elected Vermont State Treasurer in 1800. He served until 1833, and is the state's longest-tenured Treasurer. This is an original document, dated Woodstock, 1811, a double sided writ for non-payment of debts....signed twice on the front by Benjamin Swan and once on the back side. 198. [MILITARY MEDICAL] The Association of MILITARY SURGEONS of the United States. 1919 document signed. Major Paul Stanley Hill elected to this association, Henry Patrick Birmingham(1854-1932) who was a surgeon and an American brigadier general active during World War I. Birmingham's first tours of duty were with the Fourth Cavalry in actions against the Apaches in the southwest. He was promoted to assistant surgeon on February 18, 1886. During the Spanish–American War, he served in Puerto Rico and then in the Philippines. On June 4, 1898, he was promoted to major, brigade surgeon of volunteers, and on April 23, 1908 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, Medical Corps. In 1914, he was the chief surgeon of the Vera Cruz Expedition under General Frederick Funston. On October 2, 1917, Birmingham was promoted to brigadier general and the same year he received an honorary master's degree from the University of Michigan. During World War I, Birmingham was in charge of the ambulance service of the army and the gas defense service of the medical department. In 1918, he retired as a colonel, then went right back to active duty. In 1930, he retired by operation of law as a brigadier general. Also signed by Secretary James Robb Church (1866-1923) 

United States Army Assistant Surgeon who received the Medal of Honor for his actions as part of the Rough Riders regiment during the Spanish–American War. He also served in World War I, and wrote about the effects of poison gas and his experiences as a wartime doctor. Church was awarded a Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle of Las Guasimas in the Spanish–American War on June 24, 1898. He received his medal on January 10, 1906, from Theodore Roosevelt, who was also part of the Rough Rider regiment.  It was the first time that the Medal of Honor had ever been presented in person by the president of the United States. In addition to performing gallantly the duties pertaining to his position, voluntarily and unaided carried several seriously wounded men from the firing line to a secure position in the rear, in each instance being subjected to a very heavy fire and great exposure and danger. After the Spanish–American War, he remained in the Army, obtaining the rank of colonel. Before the United States entered World War I, Church went to France as an observer and an attaché with the French Army. Once the United States entered the war, Church joined the staff of the American expeditionary force. While an observer in France, he reported on the newly introduced poison gas warfare. He himself suffered the effects of gas. The reports of Church and Charles Flandin became a basis for the Chemical Warfare Service. He wrote a book based on his experience as a wartime doctor, The doctor's part, what happens to the wounded in war. Approx. 9 x 11-3/4 in. Expected age wear but VG............200-300

Brief bio. on some of these signers:

Charles Helm (1777-1831) served in the Kentucky House in 1806, 1809-1811 and the Kentucky Senate from 1812-1816. He was also a veteran of the War of 1812.

Samuel Bush (1772-1812) became the Uncle of Abe Lincoln.

John Vertrees (1741-1803) he was a Captain solider in the Revolutionary War, one of 175 Virginia voluntees called by the Indians “Long Knives”, with George Rogers Clark in the conquest of the Northwest Territory (1778-9), fighting at Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Vincennes, Chilloocpthe and Pickaway; and was a captain of a company of soldiers with Col. John Floyd against Indians in 1782, following their incursions into Hardin and other counties in 1781. 

Stephen Rawlings (1749-1830) Private Stephen Rawlings, served in the American Revolution from 18 July until 21 August of 1780. He was in a Militia under the command of Col William Linn, in Captain John Swan's Company. At this time, George Rogers Clark was the Commanding General. Stephen was on the payroll of the Jefferson Militia under actual service in repelling an invasion of the enemy Indians, the expedition against the enemy, under General George Rogers Clark, from the 21st of October 1782 until the 6th of November 1782. 

James Crutcher (1755-1823) served as a corporal in Company 8, 2nd Virginia Regiment from June 1, 1777, to January 1778. He fought in the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown and wintered at Valley Forge in 1777-78 in his 2nd Virgina Regiment service.

BEN HELM (1767-1858) known as "Kitchen Knife Whetted on a Brick." He was a surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts; major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was a partner, in the general store business, with Duff Green [later statesman] in the early frontier days of Kentucky. It is likely that young Abe Lincoln visited his store often in his early youth.

213. Admiral George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, PC [1720-1795] British peer, naval officer and politician. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1739 and in 1742 was promoted to be commander of the Terrible bomb. In the course of 1743 he was appointed acting captain of the Kennington of 20 guns, and was officially confirmed on 19 August 1744. He commanded her in the Mediterranean till 1745, when he was advanced to the Salisbury of 50 guns. This ship, as part of the Western Fleet under Hawke and Boscawen, initially patrolled the Bay of Biscay during the War of Austrian Succession. Its ship's surgeon was James Lind, who conducted his experiments on scurvy during such a patrol in 1747. The war ended in 1748. About this time Edgcumbe was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds and the Salisbury appears in the background. Signed address panel............40-60

Offered here is an original color vintage litho. photo of astronaut Alan Shepard.  Whisenhant writes in ink below image "Shepard."  Provenance: from the personal files of Willene Whisenhant, the photographer. WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade.Fine.............100-150

227. [ENGLAND] Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman. document signed, JUNE 17, 1710, APPROX. 9 X 3-1/2 in. Payment order for 1,000 pounds. Fine condition. Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman of unsulliintegrity, was the eldest son of Horatio, the first Viscount. He succeeded to the Peerage in December 1687, being educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. When he took his seat in the House of Lords his sympathies leant to Toryism, but this predilection soon faded away, and in February 1701 it was rumoured among the courtiers that he would hold office of Privy Soal in the Whig Ministry which William the Third had in view. For some years after the accession of Queen Anne he remained without office, but on September 29th 1707 he was created Yeomen of the Guard, and in the same year he was summoned to the Privy Council, a distinction renewed by the queen's two successors to the throne. The command og the Yeomen remained in his hands until June 13th 1711, but its responsibilities did not prevent him from acting as joint plent- potentiary with the Duke of Marlborough in the peace negotiations with France which were carried on at Gertruydenburg, near Breda, o from serving as ambassador extraordinary at the Hague Congress (May 2, 1709 to March 26, 1711). Townshend was in high favour of George the First and on that king's arrival at the Hague in September 1714 he published the appointment of Charles as Secretary of State for the Southern Department, entrusting to his new minister the privilege of nominating his own colleague: Horace Walpole (??? Robert Walpole ), his brother-in-law and private secretary recommended Stanhope for the vacant post, and Stanhope was duly appointed. Townshend did not neglect to avail himself of the advantages afforded by his attendance on the king, and before he arrival of George the First in England he had obtained complete ascendency both over his mind and the dispositions of the advisors by whom his line of conduct was usually determined. The policy of the new ministers, both at home and abroad, lay in the promotion of peace. With this object they endeavoured to limit the charges against their predecessor Harley, Lord Oxford, to high crimes and misdemeanours. To gain this and they brought about, in 1716, an alliance between those ancient rivals in arms, France and England. In spite of their success their influence was gradually undermined by the intrigues of Lord Sunderland and by the discontent of the Hanoverian favourites, who deemed the pensions and the places which they had gained as insufficient reward for their exertions. In October, 1716 Stanhope accompanied the King on a journey to Hanover, and during this visit was seduced from his allegiance to his colleague by the wily Sunderland, who had ingratiated himself into royal favour. George the First was induced into believing that Townshend and Walpole were caballing with the prince of Wales, and were forming designs against the royal authority. Townshend was dismissed in December 1716 from his place of Secretary of State, and was afforded in lieu thereof the splendid banishment of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a gilded sinecure which he at first contemptuously declined, but finally condescended ultimately to accept on condition that he was not required to set foot on Irish soil. His latent spirit of hostility to this arrangement quickly developed into open antagonism, and in March 1717 he was dismissed from this position. At the close of May 1720, a partial reconciliation took place between the opposing Whig sections of Stanhope and Townshend. The Latter was readmitted into the Ministry as Lord President of the Council on 11th June 1720, and his devoted colleague, Sir Robert Walpole, became Paymaster General. When the South Sea Bubble burst, the fortunes of the Ministry shared in the misfortunes of the scheme which they had promoted. Stanhope, in a paroxysm of passion during a heated debate broke a blood vessel, and Sunderland, although acquitted of the charge of personal corruption, was forced to retire into private life. The withdrawal of these statesmen assigned to their rivals the chief positions in the state. Townshend became Secretary of State on the 10th February 1721, and Walpole gained the position of First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The death of George the First threatened a change of advisors, but the dismay of the new king's favourite, Spencer Compton, at being called upon to draw up the royal speech led to the old ministers of the Crown being retained in their places. What the attack on the opposition could not affect, the internal strife of the administration accomplished. Townshend was of a proud, impetuous nature, born more accustomed to rule than obey. His family had for many generations stood higher in the social life of Norfolk than Walpole's progenitors, and when he himself attained the distinction in politics his position as a member of the Upper House was greater than that enjoyed by his friend in the Commons.As the power of the Lower House increased, and as Walpole became more and more the object of attacks by the Tories, the pre-eminence of Townshend passed from him. So long, to use the witty remark of Sir Robert Walpole, as the firm of Townshend and Walpole was such, things went well with them, [Lady Dorothy Walpole 1686-1726] but when the positions were reversed jealousies arose between the partners. The growing alienation was hastened by the death in 1725 of the Secretary's wife, Walpole's sister. At the close of 1729 Townshend endeavoured to obtain the appointment of his old and attached friend, Lord Chesterfield, as his fellow secretary of state, and the failure of the attempt brought about a fierce scene between himself and Walpole. They broke into passionate words, seized one another by the coat collars, and would have come to blows had their friends not intervened. After the outbreak of passion further co-operation was impossible and Townshend had the good sense to recognise the position. He retired tp private life on 15th May 1730. The Chief domestic events of Townshend's ministry were the impeachment of Bishop Atterbury; the partial restoration of Lord Bolingbroke; and the troubles in Ireland over the granting to a man named Wood of a patent for coining pence. Its concluding act was the signing of the Treaty of Seville on November 9th 1729. Charles Townshend died of apoplexy on 21st June 1738, aged 64. Slow in forming, but resolute in adhering to, his opinion, and like so many many men of that stamp, he was impatient of contradiction. His manners have been styled "course, rustic, and seemingly brutal" but these defects were not visible in his domestic life. Never did minister leave office with cleaner hands. He did not add one acre to his estate, nor leave large fortunes to his younger children.............80-120

Afterwards he went to England, where he supported Mrs. Anna Cora Mowatt (Ritchie) (1819 -1870), William Charles Macready and others. In 1854 he was again in the United States, appearing in Shakespearian plays and in dramatizations of Dickens's novels. As Senate Minority Leader from 1959 to 1969, he played a highly visible and key role in the politics of the 1960s. He helped write and pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968, both landmark pieces of legislation during the civil rights movement. He was also one of the Senate's strongest supporters of the Vietnam War. A talented orator with a florid style and a notably rich baritone voice, he delivered flamboyant speeches that caused his detractors to refer to him as "The Wizard of Ooze". It seems that Margaret Mockler made a claim as the widow of Thomas Mockler, deceased, formerly a Laudsman on the USS Fernandina and collected $36.13 Prize money.  Years later a man claiming to be Thomas Mockler makes a claim.  3-1/3 pages,  5-1/2 x 8-3/4 in.  Pairo is asking for additional information to begin the process of determing who the imposter is, Margaret or the other man. He was married to actress and playwright Clara Lipman (1864–1952) was an American musical comedy actress and playwright whose career began in 1885 and continued on until her retirement in 1927. She was the wife of comedian Louis Mann and the sister of popular Lieder singer, Mattie Lipman MaruNeither is actually signed. Each about 3 x 1-3/4 in. Fine..................25-25

[FRANCE] Pierre Patte (1723–1814) was a French architect who was the assistant of the great French teacher of architecture, Jacques-François Blondel, whose Cours d'architecture which ran to nine volumes by 1777, he saw through the press after Blondel's death in 1774.  He has been credited for having been the first to illustrate a city street plan with buildings and sewer system shown in a section view, a reference to a section he produced in 1769, though recent study has shown the irrefutable influence of a similar drawing produced by the Portuguese engineer Eugenio dos Santos in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Under the reign of Louis XV Patte theorized in the middle of the 18th century about thinking about the overall structure of the city as an urban organism where changing one aspect would affect the whole thing. A century later some of Patte's ideas would help change Paris under the direction of Baron Haussmann.  Offered here is 7 lines identified as written by Patte, dated 1768, 1p, 7.5 x 9 in. (2) Stephen Lushington (17892-1873)  British judge, Member of Parliament and a radical for the abolition of slavery and capital punishment. He served as Judge of the High Court of Admiralty from 1838 to 1867.Postmarked 1833. (3) Benjamin Lumley (1811-1875) was a Canadian-born British opera manager and solicitor. Born Benjamin Levy, he was the son of a Jewish merchant Louis Levy. Postmarked 1833. (4) Sir James Mackintosh (1765-1832) Scottish jurist, Whig politician and historian. His studies and sympathies embraced many interests. He was trained as a doctor and barrister, and worked also as a journalist, judge, administrator, professor, philosopher and politician. Postmarked 1826. (5) Charles Manners-Sutton, 1st Viscount Canterbury, GCB, PC (9 January 1780 – 21 July 1845) was a British Tory politician who served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1817 to 1835.
