[BRITISH NAVAL HISTORY] Sir Charles Napier (1786-1860) British Admiral whose sixty years in the Royal Navy included service in the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War and the Crimean War (with the Russians), and a period commanding the Portuguese navy in the Liberal Wars. An innovator concerned with the development of iron ships, and an advocate of humane reform in the Royal Navy, he was also active in politics as a Liberal Member of Parliament and was probably the naval officer most widely known to the public in the early Victorian Era. During the War of 1812 he spent a lot of time in battles in the United States. Offered here is a postmarked envelope not signed but i nk addressed by Napier. Postmarked 1841. 96. [THEATRE-MUSIC] Sofia Scalchi (1850-1922) was an Italian operatic contralto who could also sing in the mezzo-soprano range. Her career was international, and she appeared at leading theatres in both Europe and America. Scalchi helped to make history when she sang in the newly constructed New York City Metropolitan Opera's first ever staged work, Charles Gounod's Faust, which inaugurated the theatre on October 22, 1883. She returned to Mapleson's troupe a year later but went back to the Metropolitan in 1891, where she would spend five further seasons. Offered here is a signed card dated 1882, about 3.5 x 2 in. 99. [MAINE] Henry Richards (1848-1949) He married Laura Elizabeth Howe, daughter of Samuel Gridley and Julia Ward Howe. They married in Boston on June 17, 1871. Reverend James Freeman Clark officiated the ceremony, which took place at Church of the Disciples Unitarian. In 1876, they moved to Gardiner, Maine. In 1900 the Richards Paper Company was consolidated with International Paper Company, which purchased the property in Gardiner. At this point Henry worked as an architect during the winters while his summers were spent carrying on a boys camp at a property they purchased on Great Pond in Belgrade, Maine. That camp was known as Camp Merryweather and it was the very first camp for boys opening in 1900. Henry was very involved locally, serving as chairman of the Gardiner school board, trustee of Gardiner Water District, director of the Public Library of Gardiner (he even designed the building), and a member of city council. 102. [THEATRE] William Horace Lingard (1837–1927) English comic singer. In 1868, Lingard immigrated to America (along with his wife, Alice Dunning Lingard). He made his comic debut in New York City that year. After this debut—held at the Theatre Comique, on 6 April 1868—Lingard became known as one of the funniest men of the time. Nicknamed "Matty", he was christened Alfred Edward Matthews. He was affectionately regarded by the British public over his extraordinarily long career. From World War II until his death he enjoyed renown as one of British cinema's most famous crotchety, and sometimes rascally, old men. 109. [THEATRE] Florence Williams (1910-1995) American actress. She played many parts in summer stock, where she met future husband scenic designer Leon Whitten, and eventually landed on Broadway performing opposite legendary actress Lillian Gish. Florence left New York and her entertainment career behind in 1973, retiring with her husband to a quiet life in Rockport, Maine. Although she received many invitations to participate in community theater, Florence felt that she was too old to resume acting and politely declined. However, to keep herself active, she joined a local acting workshop at age 81. Encouraged by her peers, an initially reluctant Florence ultimately participated in The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman show based on the life of poet Emily Dickinson. Using the professional name Florence Marshall, she performed her show nationally for the public in a series of benefits for nursing homes and abused children. Florence continued to involve herself in local Maine theater productions until 1992, two years before her death at age 84. 110. [US NAVAL] Ellsworth Davis [1892-1946] American naval officer. He served on the U.S.S. Florida as a signal officer, official uniform inspector and flag lieutenant. During the U.S. occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico on April 1914, Davis led a company onshore and overtook the town's postal service building. In addition to his service on the U.S.S. Florida, Davis served in the Mediterranean and off of the U.S. Atlantic Coast on the Brooklyn and the Fairfax. He was commanding officer of the USS Fairfax from 1934 to 1936. The Fairfax was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War I, later transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Richmond (G88), as a Town class destroyer. The Fairfax took part in the Presidential Review taken by Franklin D. Roosevelt in San Diego in March 1933, and then sailed for the East coast, where she continued her reserve training duty. She also patrolled in Cuban waters, and in the summers of 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940 sailed out of Annapolis training midshipmen of the Naval Academy. Between October 1935 and March 1937, she served with the Special Service Squadron out of Coco Solo and Balboa, Canal Zone, operating primarily on the Atlantic side of the Canal Zone. His father would not hear of his becoming an actor, so he ran away from home at the age of nineteen to join a travelling company. 117. [WORLD WAR 2 NAVAL] George Frederick Hussey Jr. (1894-1983) was United States Navy Vice admiral during World War II, who served as the Chief of Naval Ordnance from December 1943 to September 1947. During the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hussey served with the USS Hopkins within directing the off-shore patrol off Hawaii. Hussey was ordered to Washington, D.C., where he was appointed the director of production within the Bureau of Ordnance. In December 1943, Hussey succeeded Rear admiral William H. P. Blandy and became the Chief of the Bureau. In this capacity, he was responsible for the directing of development and production of Naval arms during World War II. Hussey was decorated with the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his service during the War and finally retired from the Navy in September 1947. 118. [WORLD WAR 2 NAVAL] John H. Newton (1881-1948) Commander, Cruisers, Scouting Force at the outbreak of war. At the moment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was in tactical command of the Lexington task force, which was on the way to deliver aircraft to Midway. After war broke out, the Lexington force was given to the more senior Brown, and Newton commanded its screen. Relieved before the end of the year, he was given command of the South Pacific Area in June 1944, when it had lost almost all strategic relevance. 120. Nancy Huston Banks (1849-1934) American journalist, literary critic, and novelist from Kentucky. During the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, Banks was on the Board of Lady Managers, and worked for the fair as a writer and editor. Banks moved to New York to pursue a writing career in the early 1890s. She was on staff at The Bookman magazine in its first year as a book reviewer. She also lived in London for a time, and reported from South Africa during the Boer War for a London newspaper. For a time in November 1899, she was reported caught in the Siege of Kimberley, blockaded by the Boer army, in the company of Cecil Rhodes and fellow New Yorker Amalia Küssner, a miniaturist. Nancy Huston Banks also wrote novels, including Stairs of Sand (1890), Oldfield: A Kentucky Tale of the Last Century (1902), Round Anvil Rock: A Romance (1903), and The Little Hills (1905). In reviewing the last title, Frederic Taber Cooper commented that "Few are so fortunate as Mrs. Banks in knowing the range and boundaries of their intellectual gardens, the thoughts and fancies that will best flower therein." 122. [ART] Douglas Volk [1856-1935] AMERICAN ARTIST. Douglas was born to be an artist. His father was the famous sculptor Leonard Wells Volk and his mother Emily Barlow Volk was counsin to Senator Steven Douglas. At a young age Douglas showed an ability to draw and was taken seriously later studying with George Inness, and at age 14 took classes at the Accademia San Luca in Italy. In 1873 Volk went to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts with the Master Jean-Leon Gerome. When he returned to the U.S. he began teaching at The Cooper Institute in New York and in 1886 was founder of the Minneapolis School Of Fine Art. In 1893 Volk was chosen for the selection committee at the Columbian Expo where he exhibited three paintings and the the gold medal, his first major award. In 1899 the National Academy granted him membership. His paintings hang in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum in NY. Douglas Volk first ventured into Lincoln portraiture in 1908, and that canvas, reworked in 1917, eventually found its way into the National Gallery of Art. It also achieved a kind of anonymous familiarity between 1954 and 1968, when it was featured on the regular four-cent U.S. postage stamp. When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. It was this boy, long grown to manhood who was the paint one of the most famous portraits of Lincoln. One of his Lincoln portraits hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom in The White House. 123. Jack (John Ludlow) Gould (1914-1993) American journalist and critic, who wrote commentary about television. He started as a copy boy at the New York Herald Tribune in 1932. In 1937 he moved to The New York Times, writing for the drama department and in the 1940s writing also about radio. In 1944 he became the newspaper's radio critic, and in 1948 the chief television reporter and critic. At one point he had eight people working under him. In the early 1960s he was a CBS executive for a short time but returned to the Times. Gould's columns and reviews (along with those of rival John Crosby of the Herald Tribune) were widely read by decision makers in the fledgling medium of television, and Gould had many professional and personal relationships with prominent industry figures such as Edward R. Murrow and Fred Friendly. He did not hold back harsh criticism, even when The New York Times itself produced its own public affairs program in 1963; he was aware of the potential power of television as a force for social good. 126. [BUSINESS] Frederick Fraley (1804-1901) American businessman, politician, and civic leader from Pennsylvania. He was involved in several successful businesses and served on the Philadelphia City Council and as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate. He was one of the founders of the Franklin Institute and one of the first directors of Girard College in Philadelphia. He worked for seven years as secretary of the American Fire Insurance Company and for twenty-three years as president of the Schuylkill Navigation Company. He also worked for the Western Savings Fund Society and as president of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company.  He was associated with the Philadelphia Board of Trade and served as president of the National Board of Trade. In 1824 he was one of the founders of the Franklin Institute and served as treasurer for many years.  In 1847, he became one of the first directors of Girard College. In 1853 Fraley became a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. He also worked as president of the Western Saving Fund Society. In 1880, he received an honorary degree of LL.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was one of the founders of the Union League of Philadelphia. 128. [SCIENCE] Hermon Carey Bumpus (1862-1943) American biologist, museum director, and the fifth president of Tufts College (later Tufts University). Bumpus joined the faculty of Brown as a professor of comparative zoology in 1890, where he emphasized active experimentation over the "didactic doldrums" of lectures. In 1893, Bumpus worked with colleagues Charles V. Chapin and John Howard Appleton in establishing a premedical program, one of the first premedical programs in the United States, with Bumpus as the director. He was a teacher of art at the Fieldston School, the Museum of Modern Art (1943-46), the Baltimore Educational Alliance, the Veterans' Art Center and at Smith College. After teaching at Smith College from 1946-1969, in 1969 he became Chair of the Art Department at the City College of New York. He kept a studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he died. 131. J.S. DILLER (Joseph Silas) [b. 1850] American geologist, born in Plainfield, Pennsylvania. He was graduated at Lawrence scientific school of Harvard in 1879, and spent two years in postgraduate studies at Harvard and at the University in GSttingen. From 1873 till 1877 he taught in the State normal school in Westfield, Massachusetts, and from 1881 till 1883 was geologist of the Assos expedition. In 1883 he became assistant geologist on the U. S. geological survey, and in that capacity has traveled extensively throughout the United States. He is a member of several scientific societies, and author of numerous papers that have been published in scientific journals in the United States and in Europe, the principal of which are "Notes on the Geology of the Troad" (1883); "Diamonds in the United States" (1886) and "Notes on the Geology of Northern California" (1886). His distinctive and subtle landscapes depicting views in Devon, Surrey and Kent were widely exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists and the British Institution. 133. [AVIATION] Ruth Rowland Nichols (1901-1960) American aviation pioneer. She was the only woman yet to hold simultaneous world records for speed, altitude, and distance for a female pilot. She has a very interesting biography including her connect to Amelia Earhart. In December 1930, she beat Charles Lindbergh's record time for a cross-country flight, completing the trip in 13 hours, 21 minutes. 134. [ENGLAND] Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863) English glassware manufacturer and politician. His main interest lay in the chemistry of glass-making. In 1819, he took out his first patent for the manufacture of "sulfides" or Cameo Incrustations. Pellatt originally called them "Crystallo-Ceramie," reflecting their French origin. The process involved the embedding of ceramic figurines into the glass sides of paperweights, jugs, decanters, etc., by cutting a hole in the hot glass, sliding in the insert, and resealing the glass afterward. Pellatt became the most famous and successful producers of sulfides in England from 1819 to the mid-century rivalled only by Baccarat in France. He described their manufacture in a book on glass-making entitled "Curiosities of Glassmaking" published in 1849. 135. Ernest Harold Baynes (1868–1925) American naturalist. He was "the closest thing New England, and the world for that matter, will ever get to a real-life Doctor Dolittle; all sorts of New England birds and animals–foxes, wolves, chickadees, bears and bison were known to roam around and in and out of his house." He treated animals like friends, but unlike Doolittle, never claimed to talk to them. He was instrumental in bringing to public attention the near demise of songbirds and of the bison. Neff, and later was involved with the Oregon land fraud scandal, for which he was indicted and convicted while a sitting U.S. Senator, one of only eleven sitting U.S. Senators ever indicted, and one of only five ever convicted. He was an associate of Lamartine, but refused an appointment to the office in the foreign affairs ministry. He was elected deputy in 1863 and joined the opposition to the Second Empire regime. His bright and eloquent speeches won him a fame of brilliant orator. Re-elected in 1869, he protested against the war with Prussia and became member of the Government of National Defense on 4 September 1870. From 31 January to 4 February 1871, Pelletan exercised the duties of public education minister, but he departed for Bordeaux on 6 February. He was elected to the National Assembly in February 1871. By 1950, Stevens was reduced to playing a standard mustachioed villain in the Bowery Boys epic Blues Busters. His saving turnaround came about when Stevens was cast in the title role of the 1958 Blake Edwards-produced TV private eye series Peter Gunn. Though obviously imitating Cary Grant in the early episodes of this three-season hit, Stevens eventually developed a hard-edged acting style all his own. He later re-created his TV role in the 1967 theatrical feature Gunn. 159. [ART] Nell Blaine (1922-1996) American artist. In 1942, she moved to New York City to study painting under Hans Hofmann to whom she was connected by printmaker Worden Day. Through her yearlong training at the Hans Hofmann School, she adopted a non-painterly style. By 1943, she joined the American Abstract Artists group as its youngest member. Blaine studied etching and engraving with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 starting in 1945. Blaine's work had begun as "tightly realist" but transformed to an abstract style, which was inspired by artists such as Piet Mondrian, Fernand Leger, and Jean Helion. Blaine's association with the American Abstract Artists group led to her receiving her first solo exhibition, held at Greenwich Village's Jane Street Gallery, of which she was a founding member and was home to the earliest known artists' cooperative in New York. Blaine briefly lived and worked in Paris around 1950 with Larry Rivers, traveling across Europe and exhibiting with the American Abstract Artists group in France, Denmark, and Italy. This experience inspired her to try traditional 19th century European painting. She showed at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery starting in 1953. Blaine was prominent among a prestigious circle of New York artists and poets which included John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Willem de Kooning, Kenneth Koch, Lee Krasner, Jane Freilicher, Leland Bell, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Robert De Niro Sr., and Rudy Burckhardt. In 1955, she designed the original logo of column heads and layout for weekly New York newspaper The Village Voice Offered here is a 1972 envelope upon which she writes about students of Hans Hofmann etc. Signed "N". 163. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. 168. [LAW] Richard H. Thornton (1845-1925) The son of a prominent English Wesleyan clergyman and Latin tutor, Richard Hopwood Thornton was born in 1845 in Didebury, Lancashire, England. After attending New Kingswood School near Bath, he passed the entrance examination for Oxford University in 1862, but instead entered a London business house. After a visit to Paris in 1870 he went to Canada in 1871 where he taught school in various places. Receiving a small legacy from his mother in 1874, he travelled throughout North America, attended Columbia University law school in Washington, and was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia in 1878. In 1884 Thornton received an invitation from Judge Matthew P. Deady to come to Oregon and serve as the first dean of the University of Oregon law school. Thornton accepted the position and held the post in Portland for the next nineteen years. After his retirement in 1903 he travelled in Europe with his wife, and after her death he moved to London in 1907. There he compiled the work An Amercian glossary, which was published in 1912. He returned to the U.S. in 1916 and eventually took up residence again in Portland, Oregon, where he died in January of 1925. Offered here is an extraordinary ALS, Law School of The University of Oregon, 3 full pages written to Wm. Henry Rawle (1823-1889) the noted Philadephia lawyer. Excellent content about an address that Rawle gave before the Phi Beta Kappa Society Honor Society. Notice the $45 price [1984] written in pencil at top left corner. He was knighted in 1881 and created a baronet on 25 January 1889. Bramwell trained as an engineer and studied steam propulsion. 194. [FRANCE] Ambroise-Marie Carré OP (1908-2004) Catholic priest, author and member of the French Academy. Born in Fleury-les-Aubrais in Loiret, France, Carré studied at l'école Saint-Joseph and the collège Sainte-Croix de Neuilly before entering the Dominican order in 1926 and being ordained a priest in 1933. Not long thereafter, he was to edit, from 1936 until 1939, the Revue des Jeunes. Under the German Occupation, following the capitulation of the French government to the Nazis during the Second World War, Carré aided those persecuted by the Vichy government, regardless of their religion or ethnicity; for this, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur and the Croix de guerre. Both before and after the war, he preached many sermons and participated in conferences in France and abroad (especially in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and Belgium). He preached the Lenten sermons many times at Notre Dame de Paris, and in 1964, Paul VI called him to present spiritual exercises at the Vatican. He was elected to the French Academy on 26 June 1975, replacing Jean Cardinal Daniélou, a post he held until his death on 15 January 2004 at Ancourt, in France. 195. Hans Baur (1897- 1993) Adolf Hitler's pilot during Hitler's political campaigns of the early 1930s. He later became Hitler's personal pilot and leader of the Reichsregierung squadron. Apprehended by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II in Europe, he was imprisoned in the USSR for ten years before being extradited to France on 10 October 1955, where he was imprisoned until 1957. 197 . [WALT KUHN]  Maynard Walker (1896-1985) American art dealer in New York City for nearly 40 years who was among the first to show the works of leading American regionalist painters. In 1933, while working at the Ferargil Gallery in New York, Mr. Walker organized an exhibition for the Kansas City Art Institute that for the first time brought together the work of the regionalist painters Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry. After Mr. Walker opened his own gallery, at 108 East 57th Street, in 1935, these artists joined him and showed regularly there. The gallery was also among the first to show the work of George Grosz, the German painter and caricaturist, who moved to the United States in 1932. The gallery moved to 117 East 57th Street after the war. Offered here is a 1958 letter on which he has written 5 lines plus signature. This is a copy sent to Brenda Kuhn, daughter of the artist Walt Kuhn. Walker had written to Harold Korzenik saying that there is not enough art work by Kuhn to have an exhibition. Harold Korzenik, a Brooklyn civic leader and counsel to the United Knitted Outerwear Association, the National Textile Processors Guild, the Knitwear Employers Association and the Knitwear Manufacturers Council. 198. [ART] Horace R. Burdick (1844-1942) American artist born in East Killingly, Connecticut in 1844. Burdick went to Boston from Providence, Rhode Island in 1864 and finally settled in Malden, Massachusetts in 1886. Burdick began his art career in Providence in 1863, at the age of 19, where he was engaged in retouching and coloring photographs. Burdick attended the Union Hall School in Providence, The Lowell Institute in Boston, and the Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston. Burdick's paintings hang in many public buildings and his articles on art have been printed in various art journals. As the oldest living member of the Boston Art Club, he was honored by the group when his portrait of then President Coolidge was placed on exhibition at the Club in 1927. As an active member of the Boston Art Club, Burdick was a contemporary of numerous artists. The Boston Art Club members mentioned in Burdick's private papers include: John Joseph Enneking, John R. Key, Alfred Ordway, Frank H. Shapleigh, William E. Norton, Scott Leighton, James Wells Champney, R. Swain Gifford, Jean Paul Selinger and William F. Halsall. 199. [SPACE] WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Offered here is an original color photo of James McDivitt (b. 1929) NASA astronaut who flew in the Gemini and Apollo programs. He commanded the Gemini 4 flight during which Ed White performed the first U.S. spacewalk, and later the Apollo 9 flight which was the first crewed flight test of the Lunar Module and the complete set of Apollo flight hardware. He later became Manager of Lunar Landing Operations and was the Apollo Spacecraft Program Manager from 1969 to 1972. Whisenhant has written at the bottom "McDivitt." 204. [ART] Alexander Pope (1849-1924) American artist, both in paint and wood carving, mostly of sporting and still life subjects. As a youth, he carved and sketched animals around his home in Massachusetts. In the 1860s, he worked for his family’s lumber business. Pope studied carving, painting, perspective, and anatomy with William Rimmer, an important romantic-baroque sculptor, painter, and influential teacher of many Boston artists. He published two sets of chromolithograph versions of his watercolor paintings: Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States (1878), and Celebrated Dogs of America (1882). From 1879 to 1883, Pope created many well-received carvings of game; Czar Alexander III of Russia acquired two of the carvings. Pope became a member of the Copley Society of Art of Boston after its founding in 1879. In 1893, Pope began painting animal portraits and, later, pursued a career as a portrait painter. He also painted trompe-l'œil works. Pope’s work is in many private collections and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the White House, the Brooklyn Museum, the M.H. 209. Sir William Robert Knox-Johnston CBE RD (b. 1939) is a British sailor. In 1969, he became the first person to perform a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the globe. Along with Sir Peter Blake, he won the second Jules Verne Trophy, for which they were also named the ISAF Yachtsman of the Year award. True story concerning our collection of Scott Leighton drawings. About 30 years ago we were doing a book show and had some of the Scott Leighton drawings on the table. A man asked about the prices and I said that if he bought X number of drawings the price would be X [can't remember exact price amounts], and if he purchased more the price per piece would be lower. He looked at me then asked "How many would I need to buy before they are free?" I did not know who this person was at the time but later we became friends. He was the director of a prominent national museum. Sorry but I won't give his name.

228. [ART] Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate, title unknown, c. 1920s , 5-3/4 x 4-5/8 in. Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art show to the US, and traveled with Davies to Europe to select art for the occasion (which became the 1913 Armory Show). Negligee was probably done c. 1920 when Kuhn, Davies, and a few others in the US were experimenting with modernism as they developed their printmaking skills. Kuhn successfully continued printmaking and painting in a modernist mode for the next 30 or so years. VG...................Min. Bid $4000

229. [WORLD WAR 2] Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1888, and he immediately started work for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. During 1895-1896, he was instructor in mathematical physics at the University of Chicago, after which he worked in various positions at different locations. The most important of these was as the first director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, which was established in 1904. In this position, he set up and carried out a large-scale program of two and a half decades to map the Earth's magnetic field on land and at sea in an attempt to provide accurate, up-to-date information about this important feature. Offered here is a 1896 bank check made out to Bauer and endorsed on the serso by him. The check is signed by R.S. Woodward. Robert Simpson Woodward (1849- 924) was an American civil engineer, physicist and mathematician. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1896. In 1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical Society, and in 1900 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 237. [NAZI PERSECUTION] the following letters are from the personal papers of Frederick Solomon (1899-1980). Dr. Frederick K. “Fritz” Solomon (originally Solomonski) was born in Berlin, Germany in 1899. In 1938, when the synagogue he was serving at was torched by Nazis and he was subsequently summoned by the Gestapo, he fled Germany with his wife, Margot, and emigrated to England. While still in Europe, Solomon had studied art under the German-Jewish artists Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg and Eugene Spiro, and German expressionist Willy Jaeckel. In England, he continued his artistic career, exhibiting his religious and expressionistic work at various galleries throughout the country, including the Royal Academy and the Kensington Art Gallery in London, where he had a one-man show. His work is in the permanent collections of the Courtauld Institute, the Bazalel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Ben Uri Art Gallery St. John’s Wood, London (now incorporating the London Jewish Museum of Art). He was the curator of this latter gallery from 1943 to 1946. In 1954, Solomon left England to take up a position as rabbi for Temple Beth Ha Shalom in Williamsport, PA. After three years in Pennsylvania, he sought another position and, as a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, was appointed rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in the Vedado suburb of Havana, where he wrote sermons and hosted religious services for his congregation, a part of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Solomon was also active in the Jewish Progressive movement, frequently communicating with representatives of The World Union for Progressive Judaism throughout the 1950s in an attempt to officially associate his congregation with the organization. Dr. Solomon left Havana in 1960 and relocated to Laconia, N.H., where he served as rabbi at Temple B’nai Israel until 1963. He and his wife then moved to Rochester, N.H. in 1963, where he opened the New English Art Gallery and Studio. In his later years, Solomon served as the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, New Hampshire. He died in in 1980. Offered here is a collection of letters written to Frederick Solomon. It includes items sent to Solomon from The United Restitution Organization (URO) that was established in 1948 as a legal aid service to assist victims of Nazi persecution living outside Germany in making restitution and indemnification claims against Germany and Austria. The URO has served over 250,000 clients. It helped Jews, Roma, and other victims of Nazi crimes. At its most expansive, the URO maintained 29 offices in 15 countries around the world. British barrister Norman Bentwich was the chairman of the URO board from 1948 until his death in 1971, and Kurt May, a German-born lawyer who had fled the Nazis in 1934 after he defended a leading Social Democrat wrongly accused of being a Communist, served as its director from the early 1950s until 1990. INCLUDES a TLS, 1939 signed by Alexander J. Burnstein (1900-1980) Rabbi who was born in Kiev, Ukraine and, after making his way to the United States, graduated from Northwestern University. On December 1, 1938, upon the successful arrangement of this position by Cyrus Adler (who had presided over Burnstein's ordination less than a decade before), became the executive secretary of the Advisory Committee on Refugee Jewish Ministers from 1938 to 1942. Burnstein was one of two Jews, both rabbis (the other being Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel), who contributed to a volume celebrating the lifework of Reinhold Niebuhr.[20] Burnstein, a Jewish "admirer" of Niebuhr, wrote of his disagreement with Niebuhr in focusing on teshuvah rather than original sin in understanding human behavior. 238. [WORLD WAR 2] Dr. Ralph D. Bennett (1900-1994) His career was varied and most distinguished. He served as a professor of physics at M. I.T; as a naval officer, responsible for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington; and director of the Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory near Livermore, Calif., for the General Electric Co. He subsequently became V.P. and director of research for Martin Marietta. Dr. Bennett was a man uniquely placed to bring about significant changes in the way the Navy handled its research and development in those early years. Having both a Captain's rank and a respected technical background, he played a major role in the development of the Military-civilian partnership at NOL, and saw its use accepted universally in the rest of the Navy's R&D management. The Navywide system of Commander/Technical Director management owes its origins to Dr. Bennett. Offered here is an ink signed memorandum from Bennett to Capt. L.W. Eventually he had to leave and took a job as a tutor to Lord Elgin's children at Dunfermline. This didn't last long as he was asked to return to Oxford to teach mathematics. One of his first jobs was to prepare Robert Peel for his exams. Peel later became prime minister. Charles Lloyd soon gained a reputation as an effective teacher. 250.  [JUDAICA] Lilian Helen "Lily" Montagu, CBE (1873-1963) was the first woman to play a major role in Progressive or Reform Judaism. Her father, founder of Samuel Montagu & Co., was a self-made millionaire by 1871. He was a Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1900 as the MP for Whitechapel, a poor district of the East End of London. In 1907, Montagu was raised to the peerage as Baron Swaythling. She grew up in a pious Orthodox Jewish home, in an ethos of privilege and philanthropy, devoted to helping the poor and advancing Jewish institutions. Her eldest brother, Louis, was also a financier and political activist, founding the League of British Jews to lobby against the creation of the state of Israel. In 1893 she founded the West Central Jewish Girls Club (which subsequently merged into the Jewish Girls' Brigade). She was active in social improvement, particularly in respect to unemployment, sweat shops and bad housing. In 1901 and 1902, Montagu was to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the Jewish Religious Union in London. The Union set up the first synagogue in Liberal Judaism in the UK and helped found the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Following the retirement of Leo Baeck, Montagu served for a brief stint (1955–1959) in her 80s as president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, before handing the reins over to Solomon Freehof. She is known for her work with artists such as Horace Pippin, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Willem de Kooning, and Richard Lindner. Zilczer was interested in the connections between music and art, which she described as "the mystical strain of artistic synesthesia." She curated an exhibit titled "Visual Music: Synaesthesia in Art and Music Since 1900".[4][5] Zilczer served at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG) in various capacities from 1974-2003. His company, the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, was cited by the Robb Report in 2003 as the best gallery in the world. By late 2007, Salander had been sued by numerous customers and business partners who claimed that Salander and his company had defrauded them. In November 2007, Salander filed for personal bankruptcy, listing John McEnroe among his creditors. Offered here is a letter dated 1984, 1p, sending money to the Estate of Walt Kuhn for a Kuhn painting sold for $35,000 to Tommy LiPuma. Tommy LiPuma (1936-2017) was an American music producer. He received 33 Grammy nominations, 5 Grammy wins, and his productions sold over 75 million albums. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey had begun as a radical, but became steadily more conservative, as he acquired respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics, notably Byron, accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. 256.  Conrad K. Grieb (1905-1991) was the author of Uncovering the Forces for War. In the late 1930s he was office manager of Seward Collins's American Review Bookshop in New York. During the war he served with the United States Coast Guard. His book "Uncovering the Forces for War" was a unabashedly pro-German survey of the undercover forces for war: British World Empire, World Finance, and their constant companion, Organized World Jewry. The book was published by Grieb under his Examiner imprint and distributed widely among the remnants of the post-war American far right. Grieb later authored American Manifest Destiny and the Holocausts. Offered here is a full page 1949 TLS to George Andrews Moriarty (1883-1968) American genealogist. Moriarty went to work for the U. S. State Department in the foreign service, and served in consular and secretarial roles in Fiume, Italy; Mexico City; and Guatemala. He returned to Harvard once again to study law, and received his LL.B. in 1916. He practiced law in Providence, Rhode Island and Boston, Massachusetts for over a decade, which time also included a year in the U.S. Army at the end of World War I when he was a captain in military intelligence. In 1927 he ended his career in law and devoted the remainder of his life to historical and genealogical pursuits. In 1986 the National Genealogical Society instituted a Hall of Fame for individuals that had made significant strides in the field of genealogy. In 1990 G. Andrews Moriarty was inducted into that prestigious group, having been nominated by the Genealogical Society of Utah and the American Society of Genealogists. Moriarty was known to be anti-semitic per Maine State Police and a Nazi sympathizer. MORIARTY was deeply interested in the threat of Communism in the United States. He added he believed the Jewish people were behind the Communist Party over the whole world and were using the Russians and the Communist Party to eventually gain mastery over all the world's people. He stated he was desirous of ascertaining who the sender of certain literature was and would cooperate with the FBI in every way. He stated further he would recontact writer in the event he receives any more literature, particularly if a return address accompanies the literature. 257. [Gen. Richard Delafield] 1880 document, New York, Receipt from Trustees of the Estate of Richard Delafield deceased, from Harriet [wife], Susan and Albert. Richard Delafield (September 1, 1798 – November 5, 1873) was a United States Army officer for 52 years. He served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy for 12 years. At the start of the American Civil War, then Colonel Delafield helped equip and send volunteers from New York to the Union Army. He also was in command of defenses around New York harbor from 1861 to April 1864. On April 22, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General in the Regular Army of the United States and Chief of Engineers. On March 8, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Delafield for appointment to the grade of brevet major general in the Regular Army, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on May 4, 1866, reconfirmed due to a technicality on July 14, 1866. He retired from the US Army on August 8, 1866. He later served on two commissions relating to improvements to Boston Harbor and to lighthouses. 259. [FRANCE] Charles Wagner (1852-1918) French reformed pastor whose inspirational writings were influential in shaping the reformed theology of his time. He graduated from the Sorbonne in 1869; and studied theology at Strassburg and Göttingen. He was the pastor of a small parish in the French province of Vosges until 1882, when he went to Paris, and there opened a Sunday school and later began preaching. The publication of his book Jeunesse ("Youth") in 1891 marked him as a leader in the ethical movement in France and his influence continually increased. Besides serving as pastor to a large congregation, he took an active part in many philanthropic and charitable undertakings, and in this work came into cordial relations with men of all shades of religious belief. Of his publications, The Simple Life attracted particular interest in the United States and was widely commended by religious and ethical leaders. In the fall of 1904, Wagner visited the United States. He was invited to preach at the White House by Theodore Roosevelt on whom The Simple Life had made a lasting impression. Hinde, Thomas Hinde, and Isaac Shelby. He served the United States in the Revolution, the Northwest Indian War and the War of 1812. Surviving the gauntlet and ritual torture, in 1778 he was adopted into the Shawnee people. He married twice and had a total of ten children. 269 [FRANCE] MARY MARQUET [b. Russia 1895; died France 1979] actress who was encouraged by Sarah Bernhardt to become an actress. She made her stage debut in "La cathédrale" by the dramatist Eugène Morand. Her real triumph soon followed with "L'Aiglon" by Edmond Rostand . She joined the Comédie Française in 1923 and was one of its most revered actress for over twenty years before being fired. In 1944, she was arrested and sent to Fresne prison , near Paris: she was accused of collaborating with the Germans during the war as well as being instrumental to her son's arrest by the Gestapo. During her trial, she admitted contacting the Vichy police in 1943 and asking them to prevent her son François from joining the Resistance. Despite a severe warning by the police, he still managed to flee to Spain but was arrested and deported to Buchenwald where he died in January 1944. Mary Marquet was acquitted in January 1945 but was not allowed to return to the Comédie Française. She resumed her career on stage and appeared in light comédies, or 'comédies de boulevard' as they are called in French. She had to wait until 1949 to appear on screen again in the very mediocre 'Le 84 prend des vacances (1950). After the mid-sixties, she almost exclusively appeared in TV movies or series. 273. Admiral George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, PC [1720-1795] British peer, naval officer and politician. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1739 and in 1742 was promoted to be commander of the Terrible bomb. In the course of 1743 he was appointed acting captain of the Kennington of 20 guns, and was officially confirmed on 19 August 1744. He commanded her in the Mediterranean till 1745, when he was advanced to the Salisbury of 50 guns. This ship, as part of the Western Fleet under Hawke and Boscawen, initially patrolled the Bay of Biscay during the War of Austrian Succession. Its ship's surgeon was James Lind, who conducted his experiments on scurvy during such a patrol in 1747. The war ended in 1748. About this time Edgcumbe was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds and the Salisbury appears in the background. Signed address panel............40-60

Thureau-Dangin reconciled his liberal Catholic position with support for republican ideals. ALS, 187?, 1p, 5-1/4 x 7-1/4". One inche slice top edge o/w VG. (2) Alfred Croiset (1845-1923) French classical philologist. He was the brother of Maurice Croiset. Croiset became professor of Greek eloquence at the Sorbonne in 1885, and has also authored La poésie de Pindare (2nd edition 1886) and Histoire de la littérature grecque (5 bands, from 1887 to 1899, several later editions). His drama Le Flambée was adapted for the English stage by Peter Le Marchant and produced in London as The Turning Point and in New York as The Spy. The Broadway play Where the Poppies Grow, produced at the Theatre Republic in 1918, was adapted from Kistemaeckers’ Un Soir, au Front by Roi Cooper Megrue. His most successful Broadway production, Woman of Bronze, was written with Eugene Delard and adapted for the American stage by Paul Kester. Through Lawford, who was married to Patricia Kennedy, a sister of John F. Kennedy's, Mr. Ebbins became a favorite of JFK's and a frequent guest at the White House and on Air Force One. 293. Paul H. Douglas (1892-1976) U.S. Senator from Illinois for eighteen years, from 1949 to 1967. During his Senate career, he was a prominent member of the liberal coalition. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and becoming known as a war hero. Shortly after losing the primary, Douglas resigned from the Chicago City Council and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a private at the age of 50, one of the oldest men in Marine Corps history to do so. The son of a Church of England priest, he also served as Bishop of Rochester. It was in that role that he travelled throughout North America and met with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While he wrote a number of devotional books, he is best remembered for having recruited Isabella Gilmore to revive the female diaconate in the Anglican Communion. VG. (5) [PORTRAIT] Samuel Latham Mitchill (1764-1831) was an American physician, naturalist, and politician who lived in Plandome, New York. Mitchill taught chemistry, botany, and natural history at Columbia College from 1792 until 1801 and was a founding editor of The Medical Repository, the first medical journal in the United States. In addition to his Columbia lectures on botany, zoology, and mineralogy, Mitchill collected, identified, and classified many plants and animals, particularly aquatic organisms. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1797. From 1807 to 1826, he taught at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York and then helped organize the short-lived Rutgers Medical College of New Jersey, which he served as vice president until 1830. While at Columbia, Mitchill developed a fallacious theory of disease, which however resulted in his promotion of personal hygiene and improved sanitation. Born in Montrose, Iowa, she began her career in the family tent show, and appeared in vaudeville as a toddler (called "Baby Nedra"). In the early 1930s, Volz was featured vocalist with Cato's Vagabonds, a Des Moines, Iowa, big band that briefly enjoyed national popularity. Cato never made records, but Nedra managed to appear on exactly one 78 side, with Will Osborne's orchestra in 1933. Beginning with an episode of Good Times in 1975, she became a well-recognized supporting character actress, primarily on television and also in feature films. He taught at the Cooper Union, the Art Students League of New York, and was one of the founders of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. He and his wife Marion established a summer artist colony in western Maine.He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Emily Clarissa King (Barlow) Volk and the sculptor Leonard Wells Volk. He was named for his mother's maternal cousin, Stephen A. Douglas, the Democratic Party presidential nominee in 1860, who lost to Republican presidential nominee Abraham Lincoln. Congressman Lincoln posed for a bust by Leonard Volk in early 1860, and the sculptor made plaster casts of his face and hands. Four-year-old Douglas entertained the future president. 307. [VERMONT] Lewis Richard Morris (1760-1825) United States Representative from Vermont and a nephew of Gouverneur Morris and Lewis Morris. Born in Scarsdale, New York, he attended the common schools. He moved to Springfield, Vermont, and from 1781 to 1783 was secretary of foreign affairs. He was a member of the Springfield meeting-house committee in 1785, was tax collector in 1786 and 1787, Windsor County court clerk from 1789 to 1796 and was judge of the same court until 1801. He was clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1790 and 1791, and was a member of the convention to ratify the United States Constitution . He was secretary of the constitutional convention in Windsor in 1793. He attended the Vermont ratifying convention in Bennington, where he voted in support of the Constitution. Morris was a brigadier general in the State militia in 1793 and major general of the First Division from 1795 to 1817. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1795 to 1797 and 1803 to 1808, and served as speaker. He was elected as a Federalist to the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Congresses, holding office from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1803. His abstention from voting assured Thomas Jefferson's election as President over Aaron Burr in the House of Representatives in February, 1801. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Thomas Thompson, at wages of $15 a month. He did not remain on her long, as on Sept. 30, 1776, he was First Lieutenant of the brigantine "Reprisal," a privateer, then lying at Boston, Capt. John Wheelright; she was of about seventy tons, carried eight carriage guns (three pounders) and ten swivels, and seventy men, also provisioned for a cruise.Capt. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade.Fine.............100-150

324. [MICKEY SPILLANE] Mickey Spillane (1918- 2006) American crime novelist, whose stories often feature his signature detective character, Mike Hammer. More than 225 million copies of his books have sold internationally. Spillane was also an occasional actor, once even playing Hammer himself. Offered here are 3 letters written to Mickey Spillane. (1) Stan Purdy (1926-2010) at age 16 he was admitted into the American Federation of Musicians. While in college he founded the "Stan Purdy Orchestra" and toured the East Coast collaborating with musicians like Duke Ellington, Bucky Pizzarelli, Lou Mecca, and Maynard Ferguson. In Hollywood, he composed and conducted the music for "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer," an album based on Spillane's mystery book characters. The music consisted of an orchestral suite with narration done by Spillane. Released through John Wayne's Batjac Productions, the music was also scored for Ring of Fear, starring Spillane, Pat O'Brian, and the Clyde Beatty Circus. In New York, Stan conducted and arranged studio orchestras for many well-known jazz and dance-band musicians as well as string players from the New York Philharmonic. ALS, 1954, 1p. 8.5 x 11 in. [SCIENCE] James McKeen Cattell (1860-1944) American psychologist, was the first professor of psychology in the United States, teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, and long-time editor and publisher of scientific journals and publications, most notably the journal Science. He also served on the board of trustees for Science Service, now known as Society for Science & the Public (or SSP), from 1921–1944. The New York Times hailed him as "the dean of American science." Yet Cattell may be best remembered for his uncompromising opposition to American involvement in World War I. His public opposition to the draft led to his dismissal from his position at Columbia University, a move that later led many American universities to establish tenure as a means of protecting unpopular beliefs. 326. Roland Douglas Sawyer (1874-1969) was a Congregationalist minister and Massachusetts state legislator. He is best remembered as one of the leading Christian socialists of the first decade of the 20th century and as the author of an array of self-published books and pamphlets on genealogy and the local history of New England. In 1898, Sawyer took a position as a pastor at Hope Chapel in Brockton, Massachusetts, the first of four Congregational churches he would head. In about 1907, the previously conservative Sawyer began to gain an interest in Christian socialism, a growing movement in that day. Sawyer joined the Socialist Party of America and ran for Governor of Massachusetts on the Socialist ticket in 1912. Running as a Democrat in the fall of 1913, Sawyer ran for the Massachusetts General Court, the state legislature. Unlike his previous electoral experiences, this time Sawyer won his race for office. He ran for re-election and won every two years thereafter for more than a quarter century, sitting in the Massachusetts General Court until 1941. Sawyer took an interest in the case of Sacco and Vanzetti, two anarchists accused of murder in conjunction with a 1920 armed robbery in South Braintree, Massachusetts, and was active in the unsuccessful campaign to win the pair a stay of execution and a new trial. 333. Christie MacDonald Jefferson (1875-1962) Canadian-born American musical comedy actress and opera singer. She was perhaps best remembered as the Princess of Bozena in the 1910 operetta Spring Maid. The 1913 musical Sweethearts specifically was written for MacDonald by composer Victor Herbert. She retired from the stage after appearing in a 1920 revival of the musical comedy Florodora. She was married first to William W. 338. [SCIENCE - WAR] The following are from the papers of the American physicist Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). You already know who Peter Lawford is - Bill Asher (1921-2012) was one of the most prolific early television directors, producing or directing over two dozen series. With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. In 1964, he produced and directed Bewitched, which starred his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. As a result of his early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and is credited in one magazine article for 'inventing' the sitcom. His most significant discovery was the calculation of the convergent point of the Hyades star cluster. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1905. 345. Daniel Alden Reed (1875-1959) American football player, coach, and U.S. Representative from the state of New York. Reed was attorney for the excise department of New York from 1903 to 1909. He served in the House of Representatives as a Republican from 1919 until his death in Washington, D.C., on February 19, 1959. During World War I he was one of the commissioners sent to France by the federal government to study the ongoing food shortage in preparation for a U.S. lecture tour on the importance of food conservation. After playing football at Cornell University, Reed coached at the University of Cincinnati, Pennsylvania State University, and his alma mater. From 1899 to 1900 he coached at Cincinnati, and guided the Bearcats to an 8–6–1 record. He coached at Penn State in 1903, compiling a 5–3 record. The Maurice N. Eisendrath Bearer of Light Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the American Reform Movement, is named in his honor. She appeared in a few film shorts, notably as the lead in a Roy Mack short, "Projection Room" (1939), which seems to have also been the first film appearance for a teen-aged Gower Champion. When "Projection Room" came out, her hometown paper said it was her fourth film appearance. For several years she was a featured soloist at Radio City Music Hall. During World War II she toured the British Isles for the USO. She sang in the first opera televised by NBC, "La Boheme." In 1951 she married George F. Handel and the they lived in New York City and spent winters in Boerne, Texas. After his death she settled in Texas, living at Boerne and San Antonio. In 1971 she married Henry Stearns, a rancher. 352. [ART] DOUGLAS VOLK [1856-1935] AMERICAN ARTIST. Douglas was born to be an artist. His father was the famous sculptor Leonard Wells Volk and his mother Emily Barlow Volk was counsin to Senator Steven Douglas. At a young age Douglas showed an ability to draw and was taken seriously later studying with George Inness, and at age 14 took classes at the Accademia San Luca in Italy. In 1873 Volk went to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts with the Master Jean-Leon Gerome. When he returned to the U.S. he began teaching at The Cooper Institute in New York and in 1886 was founder of the Minneapolis School Of Fine Art. In 1893 Volk was chosen for the selection committee at the Columbian Expo where he exhibited three paintings and the the gold medal, his first major award. In 1899 the National Academy granted him membership. His paintings hang in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum in NY. Douglas Volk first ventured into Lincoln portraiture in 1908, and that canvas, reworked in 1917, eventually found its way into the National Gallery of Art. It also achieved a kind of anonymous familiarity between 1954 and 1968, when it was featured on the regular four-cent U.S. postage stamp. When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. It was this boy, long grown to manhood who was the paint one of the most famous portraits of Lincoln. One of his Lincoln portraits hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom in The White House. Stuart painted the portrait of Mrs. Nicklin about 1795, when she was in her thirtieth year. She was one of Philadelphia's celebrated beauties, the wife of Mr. Philip Nicklin, and the daughter of Chief-Justice Benjamin Chew. This plate shows notable characteristics in Mr. Ferris's method of etching, he believing in finish, and striving to obtain depth of tone and suggestion of color by close and careful working. Image 7-1/4 5-1/2" plus fairly clean marhins. Top left corner is soiled. (2)  Wendell D. Volk (1884-1953) American artist. Signed 1943 bank check. Born El Paso, TX, buried Arlington Natinal Cemetery. He was a printmaker and woodcarver, married Jessie J. McCoig, also an artist (1904-2005). The Douglas Volk family built a rustic Tudor cottage, “Hewnoaks,” on the shores of Kezar Lake in Center Lovell, Maine. [Stephen A.] Douglas Volk was the son of Leonard [W.] Volk, who was famous for his many life casts of Abraham Lincoln. S.A. Douglas Volk studied in Paris and Italy. He taught at the Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design in New York and was a founder of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art. He participated in the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and taught at the New York Society for Ethical Culture established by Felix Adler, where he met Karl von Rydingsvärd. He married Marion Larabee in 1881 and two of their children were dau. Marion and son Wendell. Daughter Marion helped Mother Marion run the Sabatos Studio, which produced woven and printed textiles. Wendell was also a weaver and learned woodcarving from Karl von Rydingsvärd. Wendell’s wife Jessie left Hewnoaks, lock, stock, and barrel, to the University of Maine. Hewnoaks was the heart of an Arts and Crafts community. Marion Volk decided to improve upon a generations-old native tradition of making “drawn” rugs and with the help of her son Wendell and daughter Marion she began Sabatos Handcrafts in 1901. The Volks gathered together residents of Center Lovell, who then carried out every part of the rug-making process. Twenty years later the Volks began producing block-printed textiles. The rugs and printed panels are extremely rare today. VG (3) RICHARD CARLE - deceased New England artist. Worked a lot around Boston and the north shore. ORIGINAL drawing, not signed, 1980. In 1886, Marrable was elected as the first President of the Society of Lady Artists (SLA), formerly the Society of Female Artists (SFA) and since 1899 is now known as the Society of Women Artists (SWA), she retired from the presidency in 1912. Concentrating primarily on video and installation since 1973, she has produced numerous multiple- and single-channel pieces. Among those are The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the TV Gallery in Moscow , San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Lennon, Weinberg, Inc., New York, and the Media Test Wall at MIT. 354. [PRISON REFORM] RARE letter by LOUIS DWIGHT (1793-1854) American Philanthropist. He graduated from Yale in 1813, and Andover Theological Seminary in 1819. He was prevented from preaching because of weak lungs, caused by inhaling a gas during a college chemical lecture. In 1824 he married Louisa Willis, sister of N.P. Willis, the poet. In that same year [1824] he embarked on a six month horseback ride for his health distributing Bibles among prison inmates in various states. The abuses that became known to him led to the formation in 1825 of the Prison Discipline Society, of which he was the practical manager until his death, effecting many needed reforms. In 1846 he visited Europe and inspected prisons there. The 29 annual reports published by Dwight contained a vast amount of valuable information not to be found elsewhere. Offered here is a ALS, Andover [Mass], 1822, 4pp. Written to Rev. Alfred Ely (1778-1866) who was born in West Springfield, MA. Ely worked as a clerk in Springfield and Hartford, CT before graduating from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1804. In 1806, Alfed Ely was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church in Monson, MA, where he remained until his death in 1866. 361. [MARYLAND] Thomas Ward Veazey (1774-1842) Maryland politician that served in a variety of roles. The zenith of his career was being the 24th Governor of the state from 1836 to 1839, when he was selected to serve three consecutive one-year terms by the Maryland General Assembly. Veazey was the last Maryland governor to be elected in this fashion and also the last Whig Party member to serve as Maryland governor. The governor vehemently and firmly believed in slavery, advocated for a general system of education throughout the State, and expressed a great deal of interest and concern over the matter of internal improvements. 363. [FILM] Dominic Frontiere (1931-2017) American composer, arranger, and jazz accordionist. He is known for composing the theme and much of the music for the television series The Outer Limits. At age twelve, he played a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. After a period with a big band in the late 1940s and early 50s, Frontiere moved to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at UCLA. He eventually became musical director at 20th Century Fox. He scored several films under the tutelage of Alfred and Lionel Newman, while also recording jazz music. An association with director and producer Leslie Stevens led to several projects, such as his innovative blend of music and sound effects for The Outer Limits. He scored several iconic themes of the '60's such as The Rat Patrol, Branded, The Flying Nun, and for producer Quinn Martin The Invaders, The Fugitive, and Twelve O'Clock High. After scoring for TV shows, he went on to compose the music for the Clint Eastwood film Hang 'Em High. The title theme for that movie became a top-10 hit for the group Booker T. & the M.G.'s. He also composed the soundtrack to the 1971 motorcycle documentary On Any Sunday, which featured Steve McQueen and was directed by Bruce Brown. Frontiere became head of the music department at Paramount Pictures in the early 1970s, where he again worked on television and film scores, while concurrently orchestrating popular music albums for, among others, Chicago. Examples of Frontiere's sweeping, cinematic orchestrations appear in the opening and closing songs of the 1977 album Nether Lands by Dan Fogelberg. He won a Golden Globe for the score to the 1980 film The Stunt Man. He also composed a jingle for the studio's television division. In 1986, Frontiere was incarcerated for nine months in a federal penitentiary after scalping tickets to the 1980 Super Bowl, which he obtained through his then-wife, Los Angeles Rams owner Georgia Frontiere. He was estimated to have scalped as many as 16,000 tickets, making a half million dollars in profit that he failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service. Frontiere pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year and one day in prison, three years probation, and fined $15,000 for failing to report income from the sale of the tickets and for lying to the IRS. Georgia Frontiere filed for divorce shortly after Dominic's release from prison. OFFERED HERE is a 1965 contract for composer for the movie BILLIE starring Patty Duke. Also signed by Milton Ebbins (1912–2008) Film executive, songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie") and composer. Ebbins helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural Ball and the subsequent 1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In May of 1962, Ebbins escorted a very late Marilyn Monroe to Madison Square Garden where she famously — and breathlessly — sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He was also the man that Lawford called after speaking to Monroe the night of her death in August of 1962. Ebbins was one of the few allowed inside the White House after the JFK assassination. As the link between Washington and Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy family patriarch and former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy navigate through the movie business, not only keeping him apprised of his son-in-law’s career moves but at one point advising him against purchasing United Artists’ movie studio. At the time of his death, Ebbins was working with his friend, actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO project about the Kennedy assassination. Ebbins music career began in 1936, he formed his own orchestra, then became music director at CBS, and went to New York in 1938, joining an advertising agency's radio department. He also had been a road manager for the Jack Jenny and Count Basie orchestras, and then a personal manager. He left his career as bandleader and became a talent manager, rising to become one of Hollywood’s top personal managers, guiding the careers of Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine and singer Vic Damone. Because of Ebbins’ musical background and his adeptness at arranging scores, he had a knack for picking hit songs for his clients. He also represented actresses Elizabeth Montgomery and Patty Duke, comedian Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford, who Ebbins managed for 35 years. Signed in the final page 11. 364. [ART] Robert Adams (1917-1984) English sculptor and designer. While not widely known outside of artistic circles, he was nonetheless regarded as one of the foremost sculptors of his generation. In a critical review of a retrospective mounted by the Gimpel Fils gallery in London in 1993, Brian Glasser of Time Out magazine described Adams as "the neglected genius of post-war British sculpture",[2] a sentiment echoed by Tim Hilton in the Sunday Independent,[3] who ranked Adams' work above that of his contemporaries, Ken Armitage, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick and Bernard Meadows. 366. [COLONIAL] William Vaughan (1703-1746) He graduated from Harvard College in 1722. Circa 1735, he was a ship's Captain, and captured pirates of the Caribbean. He served in the England U.K. Royal Army 1745-1746 attaining Colonel U.K. Army Colonel William Vaughan served in a New England colonial force, aided by a British fleet, during the Siege of Louisbourg, in 1745, when they captured Louisbourg, the capital of the French province of Île-Royale (present-day Cape Breton Island), during the War of the Austrian Succession, known, in the British colonies, as King George's War. He died circa December, 1746, in London, England, where he went after the Battle of Louisbourg, and became ill. He was buried in New Hampshire. Colonel William Vaughan was a chief organizer of the Louisbourg expedition and son of Lieutenant Governor Vaughan of New Hampshire province. Offered here is a 2-1/2 page document dated 1727, signed by Mark Hunting[twice]. Also signed twice by Eleazer Russell. We believe that it is a later 18th century copy of William Vaughan selling property to George Walker. Very good condition esp. for its age.................200-300

This test flight was for the initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1 bomber. George W. Larson (1940-2008) US Air Force pliot. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1962. He retired in 1992 as a U.S. Air Force Major General. From August 1972 to July 1978 he served with Strategic Air Command’s 4200th Test and Evaluation Squadron representing Strategic Air Command (known as SAC) in initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1. He eventually amassed more than 5,000 flying hours in 38 different Air Force aircraft. Charles C. Bock Jr. (1940-2008) Col. Bock had a long and distinguished United States Air Force career as a bomber pilot, fighter pilot, test pilot, and a military astronaut designee. Col. 372. [NAVAL] William Robert Anderson (1921-2007) was an officer in the United States Navy, and a U.S. Representative from Tennessee from 1965 to 1973. Anderson's service in World War II was distinguished. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and participated in a total of eleven combat submarine patrols. Anderson was selected by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover to be the second commanding officer of the first nuclear submarine to be placed into service, the USS Nautilus and was its commander from 1957 to 1959. Anderson and his crew received international notice when the Nautilus became the first submarine to sail successfully under the polar ice cap surrounding the North Pole. After completing his tour as commander of the Nautilus, Anderson became an assistant to Admiral Rickover. TLS, 1958, 1p., about 8x6 in. Top corners cropped off. 377. [GERMANY] ALEXANDER von KLUCK (1846-1934) German general during World War I. He enlisted in the Prussian army in time to serve in the seven-week Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War, where he was wounded twice in the Battle of Colombey-Neuilly, and awarded the Iron Cross (second class) for bravery. He was made a general of infantry in 1906, and in 1913 was appointed Inspector General of the Seventh Army District. With the outbreak of World War I, Kluck was placed in command of the German First Army. According to the Moltke revisions of the Schlieffen Plan, the First Army was part of the strong right wing and positioned on the outer western edge of the German advance through Belgium and France. 384. Alain Peyrefitte (1925-1999) was a French scholar and politician. He was a confidant of Charles de Gaulle and had a long career in public service, serving as a diplomat in Germany and Poland. He became a member of the Académie française in 1977. On 15 December 1986, he survived an assassination attempt by members of Action Directe (AD) in front of his house. 392. [FILM HISTORY] Bill Asher (1921-2012) American television and film producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific early television directors, producing or directing over two dozen series. With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. In 1964, he produced and directed Bewitched, which starred his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. As a result of his early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and is credited in one magazine article for 'inventing' the sitcom. 393.  Lilian Bowes Lyon (1895–1949) was a British poet. She was the first cousin of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. During the First World War, Lilian Bowes Lyon helped at Glamis Castle (owned by her uncle) which became a convalescence home for soldiers. Her brother Charles Bowes Lyon was killed in the war on 23 October 1914, inspiring her poem "Battlefield" which was later published in "Bright Feather Fading".   After the First World War, Lilian Bowes Lyon studied for a time at the University of Oxford and then moved to London. She was independently wealthy. In 1929, she met the writer William Plomer CBE and through him, Laurens van der Post. bb She published two novels, "The Buried Stream" (1929) and "Under the Spreading Tree" (1931) but thereafter focused on poetry. She published six individual collections with Jonathan Cape and a "Collected Poems" in 1948. Her "Collected Poems" contains an introduction by C. Day-Lewis who noted the influences of Emily Dickinson, Hopkins and Christina Rossetti. Her verse appeared in many periodicals and anthologies including "The Adelphi", "Country Life", "Kingdom Come", "The Listener", "The London Mercury, "The Lyric" (USA), "The Observer", "Orion", "Punch", "The Spectator", "Time and Tide and "Poetry" (USA). During the Second World War, Lilian Bowes Lyon moved to the East End where she used the Tilbury Docks unofficial air raid shelter and assisted with nursing the injured. She also had several amputations due to thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's Disease), losing toes, a foot, her lower legs and eventually both her legs below her hips. She returned to her home in Kensington and continued to write poetry despite the thromboangitis obliterans beginning to affect her hands. 394. [ENGLAND] Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman. document signed, JUNE 17, 1710, APPROX. 9 X 3-1/2 in. Payment order for 1,000 pounds. Fine condition. Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman of unsulliintegrity, was the eldest son of Horatio, the first Viscount. He succeeded to the Peerage in December 1687, being educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. When he took his seat in the House of Lords his sympathies leant to Toryism, but this predilection soon faded away, and in February 1701 it was rumoured among the courtiers that he would hold office of Privy Soal in the Whig Ministry which William the Third had in view. For some years after the accession of Queen Anne he remained without office, but on September 29th 1707 he was created Yeomen of the Guard, and in the same year he was summoned to the Privy Council, a distinction renewed by the queen's two successors to the throne. The command og the Yeomen remained in his hands until June 13th 1711, but its responsibilities did not prevent him from acting as joint plent- potentiary with the Duke of Marlborough in the peace negotiations with France which were carried on at Gertruydenburg, near Breda, o from serving as ambassador extraordinary at the Hague Congress (May 2, 1709 to March 26, 1711). Townshend was in high favour of George the First and on that king's arrival at the Hague in September 1714 he published the appointment of Charles as Secretary of State for the Southern Department, entrusting to his new minister the privilege of nominating his own colleague: Horace Walpole (??? Robert Walpole ), his brother-in-law and private secretary recommended Stanhope for the vacant post, and Stanhope was duly appointed. Townshend did not neglect to avail himself of the advantages afforded by his attendance on the king, and before he arrival of George the First in England he had obtained complete ascendency both over his mind and the dispositions of the advisors by whom his line of conduct was usually determined. The policy of the new ministers, both at home and abroad, lay in the promotion of peace. With this object they endeavoured to limit the charges against their predecessor Harley, Lord Oxford, to high crimes and misdemeanours. To gain this and they brought about, in 1716, an alliance between those ancient rivals in arms, France and England. In spite of their success their influence was gradually undermined by the intrigues of Lord Sunderland and by the discontent of the Hanoverian favourites, who deemed the pensions and the places which they had gained as insufficient reward for their exertions. In October, 1716 Stanhope accompanied the King on a journey to Hanover, and during this visit was seduced from his allegiance to his colleague by the wily Sunderland, who had ingratiated himself into royal favour. George the First was induced into believing that Townshend and Walpole were caballing with the prince of Wales, and were forming designs against the royal authority. Townshend was dismissed in December 1716 from his place of Secretary of State, and was afforded in lieu thereof the splendid banishment of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a gilded sinecure which he at first contemptuously declined, but finally condescended ultimately to accept on condition that he was not required to set foot on Irish soil. His latent spirit of hostility to this arrangement quickly developed into open antagonism, and in March 1717 he was dismissed from this position. At the close of May 1720, a partial reconciliation took place between the opposing Whig sections of Stanhope and Townshend. The Latter was readmitted into the Ministry as Lord President of the Council on 11th June 1720, and his devoted colleague, Sir Robert Walpole, became Paymaster General. When the South Sea Bubble burst, the fortunes of the Ministry shared in the misfortunes of the scheme which they had promoted. Stanhope, in a paroxysm of passion during a heated debate broke a blood vessel, and Sunderland, although acquitted of the charge of personal corruption, was forced to retire into private life. The withdrawal of these statesmen assigned to their rivals the chief positions in the state. Townshend became Secretary of State on the 10th February 1721, and Walpole gained the position of First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The death of George the First threatened a change of advisors, but the dismay of the new king's favourite, Spencer Compton, at being called upon to draw up the royal speech led to the old ministers of the Crown being retained in their places. What the attack on the opposition could not affect, the internal strife of the administration accomplished. Townshend was of a proud, impetuous nature, born more accustomed to rule than obey. His family had for many generations stood higher in the social life of Norfolk than Walpole's progenitors, and when he himself attained the distinction in politics his position as a member of the Upper House was greater than that enjoyed by his friend in the Commons.As the power of the Lower House increased, and as Walpole became more and more the object of attacks by the Tories, the pre-eminence of Townshend passed from him. So long, to use the witty remark of Sir Robert Walpole, as the firm of Townshend and Walpole was such, things went well with them, [Lady Dorothy Walpole 1686-1726] but when the positions were reversed jealousies arose between the partners. The growing alienation was hastened by the death in 1725 of the Secretary's wife, Walpole's sister. At the close of 1729 Townshend endeavoured to obtain the appointment of his old and attached friend, Lord Chesterfield, as his fellow secretary of state, and the failure of the attempt brought about a fierce scene between himself and Walpole. They broke into passionate words, seized one another by the coat collars, and would have come to blows had their friends not intervened. After the outbreak of passion further co-operation was impossible and Townshend had the good sense to recognise the position. He retired tp private life on 15th May 1730. The Chief domestic events of Townshend's ministry were the impeachment of Bishop Atterbury; the partial restoration of Lord Bolingbroke; and the troubles in Ireland over the granting to a man named Wood of a patent for coining pence. Its concluding act was the signing of the Treaty of Seville on November 9th 1729. Charles Townshend died of apoplexy on 21st June 1738, aged 64. Slow in forming, but resolute in adhering to, his opinion, and like so many many men of that stamp, he was impatient of contradiction. His manners have been styled "course, rustic, and seemingly brutal" but these defects were not visible in his domestic life. Never did minister leave office with cleaner hands. He did not add one acre to his estate, nor leave large fortunes to his younger children.............80-120

He studied with the influential painters and theorists of his day, including Arthur Wesley Dow, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, Abbott Thayer, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. A transcendentalist and mystic, Kent painted remote and austere lands, including Newfoundland (1914-15), Tierra del Fuego (1922-23), and Greenland (1929; 1931-32; 1934-35). 396. [VIRGINIA] William E. Cameron (1842-1927) was a Confederate soldier who became a Virginia lawyer, journalist, and politician. He served as the 39th Governor of Virginia from 1882–1886. When the American Civil War started, Cameron became a drillmaster with the Missouri Minute Men at Camp Jackson. However, on May 9, 1861 Capt. General Lyon dispersed the secessionists during what became known as Camp Jackson affair, during which Cameron was captured but soon released. Returning to Virginia, on June 14, 1861 Cameron was elected as the second lieutenant of Co D, 12th Virginia Infantry, formerly a militia group in his native Petersburg, but his militia company did not re-elect him during its reorganization. Instead, on May 1, 1862 he was promoted to first lieutenant and appointed regimental adjutant. Severely wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run on September 30, 1862, Cameron won a temporary promotion to captain and assistant adjutant general upon returning to duty in June 1863. He would serve under Brigadier General William Mahone throughout the rest of the war, with his rank confirmed on November 2, 1863. Hazard was born on January 3, 1797, in the village of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, the second-eldest son of textile industrialist Rowland Hazard and Mary (née Peace) Hazard. His father founded the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company in Peace Dale, Rhode Island in 1802. Among his siblings was older brother Isaac Peace Hazard and younger brother Rowland G. Hazard.
