12. [CREEK INDIANS] Citizens of Georgia - Claims on Creek Indians, Mr. McLean, Committee on Indian Affairs, printed government document, Rep. No. 128, 20th Congress, 1st Session, February 5, 1828.
This original document was removed from a larger, bound volume, 23 pages, complete in itself. Approx. 5-1/2 x 8-3/4 in. Signed in type by John C. Calhoun and others. The history of early Georgia is largely the history of the Creek Indians. For most of Georgia's colonial period, Creeks outnumbered both European colonists and enslaved Africans and occupied more land than these newcomers. Not until the 1760s did the Creeks become a minority population in Georgia. They ceded the balance of their lands to the new state in the 1800s. On December 20, 1828, the state legislature of Georgia, fearful that the United States would not enforce (as a matter of federal policy) the removal of the Cherokee people from their historic lands in the state, enacted a series of laws which stripped the Cherokee of their rights under the laws of the state. They intended to force the Cherokee to leave the state. Andrew Jackson, who had long favored removal, was elected US president in 1828, taking office in 1829. Important piece of Georgia's history. 18. Sir Andrew Agnew, 7th Baronet (1793-1849) Scottish politician and a prominent promoter of Sunday Sabbatarianism, which brought him to the notice of Charles Dickens who criticized both his cause and his character. For this purpose he introduced no less than four Sabbath Observance Bills in the Commons, none of which passed. It was the third attempt which drew on him the wrath of Charles Dickens, whose essay Sunday Under Three Heads (1836) is very largely a personal attack on Agnew, whom he described as a fanatic, motivated by resentment of the idea that those poorer than himself might have any pleasure in life. 21. [FRANCE] 1774 autograph letter signed by the Chaplain for Louis XVI, the last king of France before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. When his father died of tuberculosis on 20 December 1765, the eleven-year-old Louis-Auguste became the new Dauphin. His mother never recovered from the loss of her husband and died on 13 March 1767, also from tuberculosis. The strict and conservative education he received from the Duc de La Vauguyon, "gouverneur des Enfants de France" (governor of the Children of France), from 1760 until his marriage in 1770, did not prepare him for the throne that he was to inherit in 1774 after the death of his grandfather, Louis XV. Throughout his education, Louis-Auguste received a mixture of studies particular to religion, morality, and humanities. His instructors may have also had a good hand in shaping Louis-Auguste into the indecisive king that he became. Abbé Berthier, his instructor, taught him that timidity was a value in strong monarchs, and Abbé Soldini, his confessor, instructed him not to let people read his mind. The letter offered here was written by Soldini. Not translated. 2pp, approx. 6-1/4 x 8-1/2 in. Fine............150-250

In 1423 he served in the French army against England, wielding the sword of Bertrand du Guesclin, a symbol of Breton support for France. After paying his ransom he was present with Joan of Arc at the siege of Orléans, at the Battle of Patay, and at the coronation of Charles VII. He was made admiral of France in 1437 and marshal in 1439. He served Charles VII faithfully in all his wars, even against the dauphin (1456), and when the latter became king as Louis XI, Laval was dismissed from the marshal's office. After the War of the Public Weal he was restored to favor, and recovered the marshal's baton, the king also granting him the offices of lieutenant-general to the government of Paris and governor of Picardy, and conferring upon him the collar of the Order of St Michael. 34. [AVIATION] Frank Datin (?-1929)
On October 4, 1929 a bit of aviation history took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, when the Grube Airport officially opened and the first airmail from that airport was flown; Transcontinental Air Mail Service Datin flew 2,200 letters to Pittsburgh, 300 of them signed by him; two days later he died in a biplane crash during a stunt exhibition at Ebensberg, Pennsylvania. Signed Postal Card, heavy stock 9 x 5 in., 1929. Addressed to Mr. G.L. Peebler [?]. Very good. Mild bit of wear. One side of this large picture postcard depicts a typical airplane of the day (likely a Transcontinental Air Mail Service plane) soaring amidst a cloudy sky. The message side bears the 5-cent "Air Mail" stamp and a McKeesport, Pennsylvania cancellation of 1929. The message portion bears a finely printed note: "Dear Sir: -- It was my privilege to carry your Air Mail yesterday. Thanks very kindly for your patronage. My reward will be your continued use of the Air Mail." Above the closing word "Pilot," Datin signs in black ink. A handsome and decorative piece, with a two large blue and red stripes running horizontally across the top with "VIA AIR MAIL" printed between. The record shows that special airmail envelopes were selling well on that day at the dedication -- presumably this very type of commemorative card bearing this special one-day-only cancellation. This would have been one of the 300 items signed by Datin flown on that very day. Ironically, by the time this was further cancelled in McKeesport, Datin had been dead for two days. A most unusual and scarce aviation and philatelic item.................Min. Bid $50

81. Charles Edward Montague (1867-1928) English journalist, known also as a writer of novels and essays. Montague was against the First World War prior to its commencement, but once it started he believed that it was right to support it in the hope of a swift resolution. In 1914, Montague was 47, which was well over the age for enlistment, but in order to enlist, he dyed his white hair black to enable him to fool the Army into accepting him. H. W. Nevinson would later write that "Montague is the only man I know whose white hair in a single night turned dark through courage." He began as a grenadier-sergeant, and rose to lieutenant and then captain of intelligence in 1915. Later in the war, he became an armed escort for VIPs visiting the battlefield. He escorted such personalities as H.G. Wells and Bernard Shaw. After the end of World War I he wrote in a strong anti-war vein. He wrote that "War hath no fury like a non-combatant." Disenchantment (1922), a collection of newspaper articles about the war, was one of the first prose works to strongly criticise the way the war was fought, and is a pivotal text in the development of literature about the First World War. Disenchantment criticised the British Press' coverage of the war and the conduct of the British generals. Montague accused the latter of being influenced by the "public school ethos" which he condemned as a "gallant robust contempt for "swats" and for all who invented new means to new ends and who trained and used their brains with a will". Montague was the father of Evelyn Aubrey Montague, the Olympic athlete and journalist depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. ALS, Oxford, England, 1927, 1p, 6 x 9 in. 97. [ART] WALT KUHN (1877-1949), American painter. After studying in many European countries, he helped organize the famous Armory Show (International Exhibition of Modern Art, New York City, 1913). He is noted chiefly for his vigorous studies of circus performers, chorines, and trapeze athletes. His Blue Clown (1931, Whitney Museum, New York City) is the most popular example of his work. He also did a number of brilliant still lifes, as well as designs for musical reviews. Kuhn helped introduce the techniques and theories of modern art to the American public and to many American artists. Offered here are twenty-seven handwritten letters- twenty-five [25] letters are from 1943, one is 1940 & the last is 1948, the year before Walt died. Most are two pages on 8 x 11 in. sheets. The majority of the letters were written from Ogunquit, Maine where the Kuhn's owned a home with a studio. At the end of 1948 he had a nervous breakdown. In some of his letters he starts to wonder about his mental abilities. Walts' letters run the gamut of town gossip to art gossip mentioning names of artists who summered in Ogunquit, war activity near Ogunquit off Boone Island, descriptions of the areas where he paints, his feelings about tourists, how his painting is going, his art patrons and dealers. A Colliers article about Walts' paintings is mentioned in a few letters and a copy of the article goes with the group. One letter is answering a question from a Chicago woman about a version of the 1913 Armory Show held there. The only archive of Kuhn's letters still in private hands......12,000-18,000
98. [Americana] 4 Bills of Lading printed on one sheet, 1838 concerning goods being shipped by Rowland G. Hazard in New York harbor bound for New Orleans. Approx. 8-1/4 x 10-1/4 in. Rowland Gibson Hazard (1801-1888) was an American industrialist, politician, and social reformer from Rhode Island. He was educated in a Quaker boarding school in Burlington, New Jersey, where he developed a particular interest in mathematics. In 1819 he returned to Rhode Island to join his elder brother Isaac in the management of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. One of Rowland Hazard's responsibilities was selling the company's products to planters in the southern United States, particularly Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. He spent winters in New Orleans from about 1833 to 1842 to sell goods that included cotton bagging cloth, pre-cut garments, low-priced shoes, and raw "Negro cloth" for use by African-American slaves. The activity that Hazard considered "as the greatest effort of his life" (according to his granddaughter) began when he was in New Orleans on business in the winter of 1841. After he learned that a free African-American man from Newport, Rhode Island was in custody in Louisiana as an escaped slave, his investigations found that many free African-Americans were being detained under the assumption they were escaped slaves. He worked with Jacob Barker, then a New Orleans lawyer, to obtain freedom for nearly 100 people being held as slaves. The action later led to charges being filed against several public officials who were responsible for the illegal detentions. His involvement with abolitionist causes and in the Republican Party eventually caused his company to lose favor with its markets in the southern United States. This helped to prompt the Peace Dale mills' transition from making cheap cotton products to selling higher quality woolens. Hazard retired from the textile business in 1866 and invested in the Union Pacific Railroad. After Union Pacific fell into financial disarray and became a party to the Credit Mobilier scandal of 1872, Hazard spent much time dealing with the company's financial affairs. VG............Min. 124 . [LINCOLN] LEONARD W. VOLK (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In 1857, he settled in Chicago, where he helped to establish the Academy of Design and was for eight years its head. In 1860 he made a life mask of Lincoln, of whom only one other was ever made (by Clark Mills in 1865). In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. 131. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. Offered here is a 1773 document concerning land in Portsmouth, NH. Concerns Thomas W. Waldron, his wife Constant and son William. It appears that all of the handwriting is by Otis Baker, Justice of the Peace. Thomas Westbrook Waldron was a prominent political figure in Dover, New Hampshire and a military officer that fought in the Siege of Louisbourg (1745). He later became a commissioner at Albany, New York and then a Royal councillor in 1782. During the American Revolution, Waldron abandoned his loyalist friend, New Hampshire Governor John Wentworth (governor) to become a patriot of the United States. He became a captain in the New Hampshire militia in the Siege of Louisbourg (1745). He commanded one of the whale boats that landed under fire from the Fortress. His correspondence from Louisbourg to his father gives a rare glimpse of life after the Siege. His letters to his father describe with some bitterness that the spoils of war did not go to New Englanders and rightly predicted that the men would be "Lul'd along" into occupying Louisbourg through the winter. Waldron is critical of General Samuel Waldo, referring to him as "Duke Trinkelo". Approx. 6-1/2 x 14+ in. Written on both sides. As you can see the top edge is very damaged..................200-300

171. [ENGLAND] Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863) English glassware manufacturer and politician. His main interest lay in the chemistry of glass-making. In 1819, he took out his first patent for the manufacture of "sulfides" or Cameo Incrustations. Pellatt originally called them "Crystallo-Ceramie," reflecting their French origin. The process involved the embedding of ceramic figurines into the glass sides of paperweights, jugs, decanters, etc., by cutting a hole in the hot glass, sliding in the insert, and resealing the glass afterward.
Pellatt became the most famous and successful producers of sulfides in England from 1819 to the mid-century rivalled only by Baccarat in France. He described their manufacture in a book on glass-making entitled "Curiosities of Glassmaking" published in 1849. After his retirement around 1850, the glass-works went into decline in the hands of his brother Frederic. ALS, 1857, 2pp, 4-1/2 x 7-3/4 in. At age 19 Raban enlisted in the artillerymen, in 1814 and participated, with the polytechnic School, in the defence of Paris. He was an avid admirer of the Emperor Napoleon and wrote a book about him under the pseudonym, the Comte de Barins. He was a member of the Secret Society of Les Saisons [very important in the 1839 Revolution]. He was arrested in the act of making bullets for the revolutionaries. Despite being an exceedingly prolific writer not only of biographical dictionaries but also 'bodice-rippers', and (as we have seen) that he tried to profit from contemporary politics to enhance his sales, he never managed to emerge from extreme poverty and died supported by his daughter at the fall of the Second Empire in 1870. "The issue of the powder plot of the Rue de Poursine was the condemnation of twenty-four individuals to various sentences of fine and imprisonment, from 300 to 3000 francs, and from four months to two years. Among the rest, Blanqui, Beaufotir, and Robier, figured as the highest mulcts, the longest terms, and each two years of surveillance at the expiration of their punishment. In November 1838, another manufactory of cartridges was discovered, and Raban, an en graver in the Palais Royal, the principal, condemned to two years in prison, two of his associates to eighteen and three months. A very large quantity of ammunition was also seized ; and every thing went to prove that the formation of secret societies to overturn the government had not ceased for an instant...." 228. [ART] Walt Kuhn (
(1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show
of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European
Modernism. Walt Kuhn is best remembered today for his key role in
planning the Armory Show. Ironically, a man who was in the forefront of
the modern movement and was seen as an advocate of adventurous new art
in 1913 came to be labelled, because of his on-going commitment to
representation, a conservative artist by future generations of art
historians. Nevertheless, he holds a place in American art history as a
skilled cartoonist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter.
Although he destroyed many of his early paintings, his works that remain
today are powerful and are a part of most major American art
collections. His portraits of circus and vaudeville entertainers are
some of the most memorable, confidently painted works of
twentieth-century American art. They are reminiscent of commedia
dell'arte actor portraits done by the French masters centuries earlier.
The Tragic Comedians (1916) in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum
and The White Clown (1929) in the collection of the National Gallery of
Art are intense, arresting images and are among his most respected
