6. American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1895 Annual meeting, Springfield, Mass. Document signed by at least 25 members. Includes:
- Bernhard E. Fernow (1851-1923) was the third chief of the USDA's Division of Forestry of the United States from 1886 to 1898, preceding Gifford Pinchot in that position, and laying much of the groundwork for the establishment of the United States Forest Service in 1905. Fernow has been called the "father of professional forestry in the United States.
- Louis Prang (1824-1909) American printer, lithographer, publisher, and Georgist.[1] He is sometimes known as the "father of the American Christmas card".
- Bushrod Washington James, A.M., M.D. (1836–1903) American surgeon, homeopathist, writer, and philanthropist.
- Albert S. Bickmore (1839-1914) American naturalist and originator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, becoming one of its founders.
- Worcester Reed Warner (1846-1929) American mechanical engineer, entrepreneur, manager, astronomer, and philanthropist. With Ambrose Swasey he cofounded the Warner & Swasey Company.

7. [NEW HAMPSHIRE] Asa Freeman (1788-1867) Asa was born in January, 1788 in Hanover, NH. He was attending Harvard College in 1810. He did not graduate, but instead, he worked in the law office of his brother, Peyton R. Freeman in Portsmouth, NH where he studied under the direction of Isaac Lyman of York, Maine. He was admitted as an attorney in York County, Maine in 1816, and practiced there until 1818 when he moved to Dover, New Hampshire to establish his home and law practice. Despite his lapse at Harvard, he found much success in his professional life. He was appointed a Commissioner of the United States by Judge Story, - was elected a Delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1850, - he was a NH State Senator in 1851 and 1852, and in - 1857 he was appointed Register of Probate for Strafford County and retained the position until he passed away in 1867. 8. [FRANCE] Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1814-1858) French Crown Princess after her marriage in 1837 to the eldest son of Louis Philippe I, Ferdinand Philippe of Orléans. She was the mother of the future Count of Paris and Duke of Chartres. Her descendants include present-day pretenders to the throne of France and Italy and the kings of Spain and Belgium. ALS, 1856, 3pp, 4-1/2 x 7-1/8 in. Not translated but ID says she says........You know, Sir, that we never made any claims that did not follow justice & law of the country....." 9. [SPACE] WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Offered here is a lithograph picture of Deke Slayton one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, and became NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations, and was responsible for NASA crew assignments.. 10. [MEDICINE] Sir Frederick Treves (1853-1923) prominent British surgeon, and an expert in anatomy. Treves was renowned for his surgical treatment of appendicitis, and is credited with saving the life of King Edward VII in 1902. See above13. [FILM] Susan Seaforth Hayes (born 1943) American dramatic actress. She is best known for her portrayal of Julie Williams on the NBC drama Days of Our Lives, and her intermittent portrayal of Joanna Manning on the CBS daytime drama The Young and the Restless. She began playing the role of Julie Olsen Williams on Days of Our Lives in 1968, and is the only actor to appear on the show for all six decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s) in which it has been on the air. Mrs. Seaforth Hayes still regularly appears on Days as Julie Olsen Williams. Offered here is her signed 1965 contract for the film BILLIE starring Patty Duke. She was paid $750 for 2 week's employment in the role of Jean Carol [changed to Jean Matthews]. Counter signed by Milt Ebbins (1912-2008) the well-connected show business manager who was a liaison between Hollywood and the Kennedy White House. Mr. Ebbins was a well-liked Hollywood insider who directed the careers of actors, musicians and comedians. For more than 30 years, he was the personal manager of actor Peter Lawford. Through Lawford, who was married to Patricia Kennedy, a sister of John F. Kennedy's, Mr. Ebbins became a favorite of JFK's and a frequent guest at the White House and on Air Force One. At Kennedy's 45th birthday party in 1962, Mr. Ebbins gave Marilyn Monroe a push onstage at Madison Square Garden as she went out to sing her sultry version of "Happy Birthday." 17. [AVIATION] Ruth Rowland Nichols (1901-1960) American aviation pioneer. She was the only woman yet to hold simultaneous world records for speed, altitude, and distance for a female pilot. She has a very interesting biography including her connect to Amelia Earhart. In December 1930, she beat Charles Lindbergh's record time for a cross-country flight, completing the trip in 13 hours, 21 minutes. 18. [From Walt Kuhn Estate] a week after his death in 1949, ART DIGEST referred to Walt Kuhn as "one of the most forceful, independent and self-disciplined painters of our time." That glowing evaluation is certainly just as valid today. [Written by Bennard B. Perlman, the art historian-author, from Baltimore]. Offered here are items from the Kuhn Estate in Maine. 19. Charles Edward Montague (1867-1928) English journalist, known also as a writer of novels and essays. Montague was against the First World War prior to its commencement, but once it started he believed that it was right to support it in the hope of a swift resolution. In 1914, Montague was 47, which was well over the age for enlistment, but in order to enlist, he dyed his white hair black to enable him to fool the Army into accepting him. H. W. Nevinson would later write that "Montague is the only man I know whose white hair in a single night turned dark through courage." He began as a grenadier-sergeant, and rose to lieutenant and then captain of intelligence in 1915. Later in the war, he became an armed escort for VIPs visiting the battlefield. He escorted such personalities as H.G. Wells and Bernard Shaw. After the end of World War I he wrote in a strong anti-war vein. He wrote that "War hath no fury like a non-combatant." Disenchantment (1922), a collection of newspaper articles about the war, was one of the first prose works to strongly criticise the way the war was fought, and is a pivotal text in the development of literature about the First World War. Disenchantment criticised the British Press' coverage of the war and the conduct of the British generals. Montague accused the latter of being influenced by the "public school ethos" which he condemned as a "gallant robust contempt for "swats" and for all who invented new means to new ends and who trained and used their brains with a will". 21. From the Paper of Charles B. Rounds, Calais, Maine. Group of 11 documents plus one letter written to Rounds from Kansas City, Mo. 1873, 3pp, signed Geo. M. Chase. These date from 1869 to 1905. Six of them are signed by Rounds [some in the text]. Charles B. Rounds - served in the civil war and was a noted attorney and judge from Calais, Maine. He was First Lieut. in Company D, 32nd Maine Infantry. Mustered April 19, 1864; wounded in the arm May 12th at Spottysylvania. Rounds was at Elmira, NY guarding prisoners of war, having been assigned by Special Order No. 164 July 20, 1864..................Min. Bid $50
22. [MICKEY SPILLANE] Mickey Spillane (1918- 2006) American crime novelist, whose stories often feature his signature detective character, Mike Hammer. More than 225 million copies of his books have sold internationally. Spillane was also an occasional actor, once even playing Hammer himself. Offered here are 3 letters written to Mickey Spillane. (1) Stan Purdy (1926-2010) at age 16 he was admitted into the American Federation of Musicians. While in college he founded the "Stan Purdy Orchestra" and toured the East Coast collaborating with musicians like Duke Ellington, Bucky Pizzarelli, Lou Mecca, and Maynard Ferguson. In Hollywood, he composed and conducted the music for "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer," an album based on Spillane's mystery book characters. The music consisted of an orchestral suite with narration done by Spillane. Released through John Wayne's Batjac Productions, the music was also scored for Ring of Fear, starring Spillane, Pat O'Brian, and the Clyde Beatty Circus. In New York, Stan conducted and arranged studio orchestras for many well-known jazz and dance-band musicians as well as string players from the New York Philharmonic. ALS, 1954, 1p. 8.5 x 11 in. This really important content about the contract regarding Purdy & the Mike hammer album. Signed Stan. (3) Richard (Dick) Irving (1917-1990) was the primary producer of the MIKE HAMMER show on TV. His company was Revue Productions, which filmed many early television series on the lot (including early episodes of Leave It To Beaver). TLS, 1955, signed Dick.1p. 23. [WORLD WAR I] William Jason Mixter, M.D. (1880-1958) prominent American surgeon. By the early 1930s, Mixter was considered to be one of the nation's leading experts in spinal surgery, and he went on to become the first chief of the neurosurgery department at Massachusetts General Hospital. He served in the U. S. Army in both world wars. In 1934, at the age of 54, Mixter and Joseph S. Barr published an article on the intervertebral disc lesion in the New England Journal of Medicine. That article fundamentally changed the popular understanding of sciatica at that time, and for this work Mixter is generally credited by his contemporaries as being the man who best clarified the relation between the intervertebral disc and sciatica. Mixter and Barr's landmark report helped to establish surgery's prominent role in the management of sciatica at the time. Over the next few decades, discectomy surgery increased in popularity tremendously, and some refer to that period as the "dynasty of the disc." 26. [ENGLAND] Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863) English glassware manufacturer and politician. His main interest lay in the chemistry of glass-making. In 1819, he took out his first patent for the manufacture of "sulfides" or Cameo Incrustations. Pellatt originally called them "Crystallo-Ceramie," reflecting their French origin. The process involved the embedding of ceramic figurines into the glass sides of paperweights, jugs, decanters, etc., by cutting a hole in the hot glass, sliding in the insert, and resealing the glass afterward.
Pellatt became the most famous and successful producers of sulfides in England from 1819 to the mid-century rivalled only by Baccarat in France. He described their manufacture in a book on glass-making entitled "Curiosities of Glassmaking" published in 1849. After his retirement around 1850, the glass-works went into decline in the hands of his brother Frederic. ALS, 1857, 2pp, 4-1/2 x 7-3/4 in. Scan 227. Ernest Harold Baynes (1868–1925) American naturalist. He was "the closest thing New England, and the world for that matter, will ever get to a real-life Doctor Dolittle; all sorts of New England birds and animals–foxes, wolves, chickadees, bears and bison were known to roam around and in and out of his house." He treated animals like friends, but unlike Doolittle, never claimed to talk to them. He was instrumental in bringing to public attention the near demise of songbirds and of the bison. He founded the American Bison Society, of which President Teddy Roosevelt was honorary chairman. SIGNATURE clipped away from letter. About 5-1/2 x 2-3/4 in. VG..............50-75

30. [ART] Leonard Wells Volk (November 7, 1828 – August 19, 1895) was an American sculptor. He is notable for making one of only two life masks of United States President Abraham Lincoln. In 1867 he helped establish the Chicago Academy of Design and served as its president until 1878. He made several large monumental sculptures, including the tomb of the politician Stephen A. Original Etching By German Expressionist 33. [ART] FREDERICK "Fritz" SOLOMON (1899-1980) German Expressionist artist. Original etching, unsigned, image approx. 5 x 3.5 in. plus margins. Comes with biographical information. This is, without doubt, by Solomon and guaranteed to be so without a time limit. Solomon won the Mowbray Prize [1944] in London; was listed in WHO'S WHO IN ART [1954 London edition]. He studied art with such famous German artist's as: Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg, Eugene Spiro & Willy Jaeckel [Masterclass]. Exhibitions: Berlin, Cologne, Capetown, Haifa, London [Royal Academy], U.S., and in 1958 had one-man show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. In 1956 several of his paintings were exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. He died in the U.S. We purchased his personal papers and most of his drawings at his estate sale. His work is fairly scarce. 36. [LAW] Richard H. Thornton (1845-1925) The son of a prominent English Wesleyan clergyman and Latin tutor, Richard Hopwood Thornton was born in 1845 in Didebury, Lancashire, England. After attending New Kingswood School near Bath, he passed the entrance examination for Oxford University in 1862, but instead entered a London business house. After a visit to Paris in 1870 he went to Canada in 1871 where he taught school in various places. Receiving a small legacy from his mother in 1874, he travelled throughout North America, attended Columbia University law school in Washington, and was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia in 1878. In 1884 Thornton received an invitation from Judge Matthew P. Deady to come to Oregon and serve as the first dean of the University of Oregon law school. Thornton accepted the position and held the post in Portland for the next nineteen years. After his retirement in 1903 he travelled in Europe with his wife, and after her death he moved to London in 1907. There he compiled the work An Amercian glossary, which was published in 1912. He returned to the U.S. in 1916 and eventually took up residence again in Portland, Oregon, where he died in January of 1925. Offered here is an extraordinary ALS, Law School of The University of Oregon, 3 full pages written to Wm. Henry Rawle (1823-1889) the noted Philadephia lawyer. Excellent content about an address that Rawle gave before the Phi Beta Kappa Society Honor Society. Notice the $45 price [1984] written in pencil at top left corner. This was from the noted autograph dealer Paul Richards, who had the practice of writing prices on letters. Very fine..........200-300
37. [DOE FAMILY] 1848 letter from Joseph Bodwell Doe (1818-1890) to his brother Charles Cogswell Doe (1830-1896) who would later become Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. This letter was sent while Joseph was ion Saratoga Springs, NY. Mainly talking about family and a possible visit from Charles. 1-1/2 pp., 7-1/2 x 9-3/4 in. Jos. B. Doe was born in New Hampshire, he was first a merchant, but when business failed, traveled west. He married Anna Marcher in 1840 and settle in Janesville in 1842, where he opened a general store. For a time he was editor of the Janesville Daily Recorder newspaper. He also loaned people money. In 1853 he entered a partnership with William Morrison Tallman known as the Central Bank of Wisconsin. This eventually became the First National Bank of Janesville. Doe served as the second mayor of Janesville. Along with several other businessmen, he helped establish the early Janesville Academy. Charles C. Doe was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of New Hampshire from 1859 to 1874, and then, after a brief period when the court was dissolved to be reorganized as the New Hampshire Supreme Court, as Chief Justice from 1876 to 1896. Roscoe Pound called Doe one of the ten greatest jurists in American history, the "one judge upon the bench of a state court who stands out as a builder of the law since the Civil War." 43. Joseph Barnes (1817-1883) American physician and the 12th Surgeon General of the United States Army (1864–1882). On August 22, 1864, he was advanced to the position of Surgeon General, with the grade of Brigadier General and on March 13, 1865, he received the brevet of major general for faithful and meritorious service during the war. On April 14, 1865, at the time of the assassination of United States President Lincoln and the attempted assassination of Secretary of State William H. Seward, Barnes attended the death bed of Lincoln and ministered to the successful restoration of Seward.
The morning after Abraham Lincoln's death, three Army Medical Museum pathologists entered the White House to perform an autopsy on Lincoln's body. Overseen by Barnes, the autopsy was conducted by Colonel Joseph Woodward and Major Edward Curtis. The autopsy began at 11 a.m. on April 15, 1865. In 1881, during the long struggle of President James A. Garfield to live after being shot, Barnes was one of the surgeons who for weeks served in the chamber of the dying president. 46. [ART - WALT KUHN ESTATE] Alfred M. Frankfurter (1906-1965) Editor of the Art News during the critical years of Abstract Expressionism. After free-lancing as an art critic for two years, Frankfurter was named editor in 1936 of the Art News, America's oldest art magazine. Under his leadership, he turned the journal into a seminal source for art information and criticism. His importance lies in his editorship of an art journal developing at the same time as the New York art scene itself. The French government made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for his services to French art. TLS, Art News, 1941, 1p, to Walt Kuhn. For some unknown reason he writes to Kuhn about a problem he was having with Richard L. Rideout, an art dealer. Walt Kuhn has written on the received envelope "Frankfurter - Rideout". 47. An 1801 Kentucky Pioneer document from Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky. promisory note signed by several prominent pioneers. Signed on the front by Charles Helm and George Helm. Charles HELM [1777- 1831 [?] - a merchant, politician, soldier. He served for many years in the state legislature and was said to be the most popular man in Hardin County. During the War of 1812, he was in Col. Aaron Hart’s company, a mounted force, each man furnishing his own horse, gun, ammunition, & rations for himself & horse. He served for a number of years in the Kentucky State Senate and House of Representatives. GEO. HELM (1774-1822) signs on the verso. In 1798 he was appointed sheriff of Hardin County; was in the State Legislature 1813, 1814 and 1816. Resigned temporarily in 1814 to serve on the staff of General John Thomas, who commanded the Kentucky troops at the Battle of New Orleans. His son became Governor of Kentucky. Geo. Helm was involved briefly in the following incident. In Elizabethtown the first execution took slave April 2, 1796. Jacob, a slave, killed his master John Crow in Dec. 1795. He fled to Vienna, but was captured and returned to Elizabethtown. Tried by a special court, he was condemned to be hanged. When Jacob was arrested he said, "I killed Crow, but you prove it." He pleaded guilty though, and was sentenced to be hung. The court not agreeing on the value of the negro, a jury was impaneled who fixed his value at 80 pounds. Confined in an old log jail, he made a desperate dash when the door was opened to feed him. George Helm, being in sight, and being then a stout young man, pursued the prisoner about 400 yards, crossing Valley Creek & ascending a hill, caught & brought Jacob back. The execution was witnessed by a large crowd. The Sheriff having a distaste for the hangman's office [by consent of Jacob] procured the services of a black man to tie the noose and drive the cart from under. For years after the matter was spoken as "The time Jacob was hung." SIGNED ON THE VERSO BY Squire Larue, James Crutcher, Ben Helm, & Michael Campbell. In 1813 Hardin County had the unique distinction of having two future presidents of the United States living within its borders: Abraham Lincoln, a boy of four years, and James Buchanan, then a young man of 22 years. Buchanan, in 1796, became part owner with James Dickey, of 3610 acres of land in Hardin County, purchased for one dollar per acre from Michael Campbell.SQUIRE LaRUE [1785-1861] the only son of John LaRue, for whom LaRue County was named. He was a Lincoln neighbor who’s son was born the day before Abraham Lincoln. His mother, Mary Brooks LaRue Enlow, was present at the birth of Squire LaRue’s son, and she was very close to the Lincolns. Legend tells us that she walked the short distance to the Lincoln cabin and was “Granny-mother” at the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Squire LaRue served in the General Assembly of Kentucky and was also County Judge of Hardin County. MAJOR JAS. CRUTCHER - Pioneer. Came to Kentucky from Virginia with his father & family, arriving at the Falls of the Ohio in early 1780s, and later moved to Bardstown. In 1796, he moved to Elizabethtown and became one of the earliest merchants there. Served terms in the legislature and came close to being elected lieutenant governor. He was at the battle of New Orleans as aide to General Thomas, commander of the Kentucky troops. He was involved in the flatboat business and it was said that after delivering a cargo by flatboat to New Orleans, Crutcher would walk back to Kentucky. On these trips he carried his money in a close fitting deer skin vest which he wore under his shirt. BEN HELM (1767-1858) known as "Kitchen Knife Whetted on a Brick." He was a surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts; major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was a partner, in the general store business, with Duff Green [later statesman] in the early frontier days of Kentucky. 49. [PIONEER KENTUCKY] Col. Joseph Barnett (1730 or 31 - 1795) an early pioneer in Kentucky who built Barnett's Station, one of the earliest forts erected near Severns Valley, Kentucky. He was also one of the founders and preacher of Regular Baptist Church of Severns Valley [Elizabethtown, KY], the oldest Baptist church in Kentucky. Barnett's Station was established by brothers Joseph and Alexander Barnett who came from Virginia to Kentucky in early 1780s. Settlement was frequently raided by Indians. During an attack in April 1790, two children were killed and Hanna Barnett, the ten-year-old daughter of Joseph, was carried off and held captive for six months. He was also one of the first judges in Elizabethtown. He, with his brother Robert, was at Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. His brother Robert was killed there. When the Revolutionary War came on some twenty years later he entered the northern wing of the army. He was in the Battle of Yorktown (October, 1781) and there met up with his brother Alexander. After some discussion they made arrangements to come to Kentucky. The following year they met at the fort where Elizabethtown now stands. To quote from Haycraft’s History "Honorable Judge Joseph Barnett . . . lived near Hartford, and traveled upwards of seventy‑five miles to sit in court. He did indeed possess a large landed estate ‑-27,934 acres at the time of his death. He was a dealer in lands on a large scale, Jefferson County (then Virginia) entries alone totaling 155,370 acres, and the early records of Nelson and Hardin Counties are full of land transactions to which he was a party. Offered here is a signed document dated 1791. Barnett is transferring 400 acres od land in Kentucky. Signed by Joseph Barnett, Thomas Allen, Robert Allen, and Anne Allen. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. 50. [MEDICAL] Tito Vanzetti (1809-1888) was a famous surgeon and professor of medicine of the 19th century. He studied surgery at the University of Padua under Bartolomeo Signoroni (1797-1844) and at the University of Vienna with Joseph Wattmann (1789-1866). Several years later, he was appointed professor of clinical surgery and ophthalmology at the University of Kharkiv. In 1853 he returned to Padua as a professor of clinical surgery. In 1846 he performed the first ovariotomy in Russia. Vanzetti is credited for introducing a procedure of manual compression for treatment of popliteal aneurysms. He became rector of the University of Padua in 1864. Together with other 16 professors, he was dismissed in 1866, after the annexation of Venetia to Italy, because of his position of support to old Austrian rule. He was reintegrated soon after, under international pressure. Offered here is a 2 page manuscript written and signed by Vanzetti, dated 1870. Scan 257. [ART] Wendell D. Volk (1884-1953) American artist. Signed 1943 bank check. Born El Paso, TX, buried Arlington Natinal Cemetery. He was a printmaker and woodcarver, married Jessie J. McCoig, also an artist (1904-2005). The Douglas Volk family built a rustic Tudor cottage, “Hewnoaks,” on the shores of Kezar Lake in Center Lovell, Maine. [Stephen A.] Douglas Volk was the son of Leonard [W.] Volk, who was famous for his many life casts of Abraham Lincoln. S.A. Douglas Volk studied in Paris and Italy. He taught at the Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design in New York and was a founder of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art. He participated in the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and taught at the New York Society for Ethical Culture established by Felix Adler, where he met Karl von Rydingsvärd. He married Marion Larabee in 1881 and two of their children were dau. Marion and son Wendell. Daughter Marion helped Mother Marion run the Sabatos Studio, which produced woven and printed textiles. Wendell was also a weaver and learned woodcarving from Karl von Rydingsvärd. Wendell’s wife Jessie left Hewnoaks, lock, stock, and barrel, to the University of Maine. Hewnoaks was the heart of an Arts and Crafts community. Marion Volk decided to improve upon a generations-old native tradition of making “drawn” rugs and with the help of her son Wendell and daughter Marion she began Sabatos Handcrafts in 1901. The Volks gathered together residents of Center Lovell, who then carried out every part of the rug-making process. Twenty years later the Volks began producing block-printed textiles. The rugs and printed panels are extremely rare today. VG.....................50-75

Blackwell; she became a school teacher, later worked for “The Woman’s Journal,” she was Lucy Stone’s niece, one-time president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association's New Jersey chapter; she was a founder of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association (NJWSA) and attended its initial meeting in February 1890. 59. Josiah William Bailey (1873-1946) American politician who served as a U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina from 1931 to 1946. Born in Warrenton, North Carolina, he grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University). Before turning to a career in law, Bailey was editor of the Biblical Recorder, a newspaper for North Carolina Baptists. Elected to the United States Senate in 1930, defeating longtime incumbent Furnifold McLendel Simmons, Bailey earned a reputation as a conservative while in office. In 1937, he coauthored the bipartisan Conservative Manifesto, a document criticizing President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and proposing more conservative alternatives. Among other things, the Manifesto called for lower taxes and less spending. During his time in office, he served as chairman of the Committee on Claims and Committee on Commerce. 61. [ART] Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European Modernism. Walt Kuhn is best remembered today for his key role in planning the Armory Show. Ironically, a man who was in the forefront of the modern movement and was seen as an advocate of adventurous new art in 1913 came to be labelled, because of his on-going commitment to representation, a conservative artist by future generations of art historians. Nevertheless, he holds a place in American art history as a skilled cartoonist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter. Although he destroyed many of his early paintings, his works that remain today are powerful and are a part of most major American art collections. His portraits of circus and vaudeville entertainers are some of the most memorable, confidently painted works of twentieth-century American art. They are reminiscent of commedia dell'arte actor portraits done by the French masters centuries earlier. The Tragic Comedians (1916) in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and The White Clown (1929) in the collection of the National Gallery of Art are intense, arresting images and are among his most respected paintings. [SCIENCE] James McKeen Cattell (1860-1944) American psychologist, was the first professor of psychology in the United States, teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, and long-time editor and publisher of scientific journals and publications, most notably the journal Science. He also served on the board of trustees for Science Service, now known as Society for Science & the Public (or SSP), from 1921–1944. The New York Times hailed him as "the dean of American science." Yet Cattell may be best remembered for his uncompromising opposition to American involvement in World War I. His public opposition to the draft led to his dismissal from his position at Columbia University, a move that later led many American universities to establish tenure as a means of protecting unpopular beliefs. 64. [MILITARY] George Miller Sternberg (1838-1915) U.S. Army physician who is considered the first U.S. bacteriologist, having written Manual of Bacteriology (1892). After he survived typhoid and yellow fever, Sternberg documented the cause of malaria (1881), discovered the cause of lobar pneumonia (1881), and confirmed the roles of the bacilli of tuberculosis and typhoid fever (1886). Offered here is a 1896 bank check endorsed on the verso by Sternberg. The check was sent and signed by Robert Simpson Woodward (1849-1924) American civil engineer, physicist and mathematician. 66. [AMERICANA] 1793 manuscript document from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. John Manning (1753-October 6, 1793) promises to pay Robert O. Treadwell 1,795 pounds. Witness was Isaac Ringe who was quite prominent; aided in establishing the northeast boundary, and during Governor Wentworth's operations erected a house here. As he was a loyalist, the Provincial Congress directed him, November 15, 1775, to remove himself to some place at least fifteen miles from Portsmouth, there to remain until he was granted leave to go abroad. This restriction was removed January 3, 1776. Wolfeborough was doubtless the place of his exile, as he evidently lived here before and after Governor Wentworth left the town. Approx. 7 x 3.5 in. Kennedy, and more noted in later years for his off-screen activities as a celebrity than for his acting. From the 1940s to the 1960s, he had a strong presence in popular culture and starred in a number of highly acclaimed films. In 1743 he became commendatory abbot of Bitaine and in 1745 Bishop of Belley. He was transferred to the diocese of Nevers in 1751. 79. [COLONIAL TIMES] John Keyes (1674-1768) John Keyes, youngest son of Solomon and Frances, was born in Chelmsford, Mass. We first hear of him in Marlboro, Mass., where is recorded the birth of his children. He probably moved to Shrewsbury about 1720, and was one of the founders of the church there. He married March 11, 1696, Mary, daughter of Gersham and Hannah (Johnson) Eames. Gersham Eames died in Watertown, Mass., Nov. 25, 1676, and Mary was born four months after her father's death. Her mother subsequently married a Ward, and became the m128yes, in Shrewsbury. On the night of the 7th, the house being nearly finished, was burned, as also the old one near it in which Major John was then residing. Six persons were sleeping in the new house. Three sons of Capt. Keyes, and two of Bragg's apprentices were burned, and Bragg saved himself by jumping from the window. John, usually known as the famous Major John Keyes, lived with his wife 72 years. Their son-in-law, Daniel Rand, married Martha Bruce for his 2nd wife, was married by Major John who had then passed his 95th year, and afterward lived with his father-in-law. His farm was subsequently known as the Rand farm, and was purchased by Col. Joseph Henshaw of Rand or his heirs. Maj. John died March 31, 1768. Mary, relict of Maj. 81. [THEATRE] antique engraving of the actor Edwin Forrest (1806-1872) prominent nineteenth-century American Shakespearean actor. His feud with the British actor William Macready was the cause of the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849. In this print he is Hamlet. The engraver was John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) American steel-plate engraver and lithographer, responsible for some 3,000 engraved portraits of American political, naval and military personalities. He published "The American Portrait Gallery" in 3 volumes (1880–81) with text by his daughter, Lillian C. Buttre. Overall size 8.5 x 11 in. American Physicist Louis W. McKeehan82. [SCIENCE - WAR] The following are from the papers of the American physicist Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Offered here are several pieces. 84. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. 85. [ENGLAND] Charles Lloyd (1784-1829), Regius Professor of Divinity and Bishop of Oxford from 1827 to 1829. Eventually he had to leave and took a job as a tutor to Lord Elgin's children at Dunfermline. This didn't last long as he was asked to return to Oxford to teach mathematics. One of his first jobs was to prepare Robert Peel for his exams. Peel later became prime minister. Charles Lloyd soon gained a reputation as an effective teacher. 86. [CUBA] (Daniel M. Braddock 1906-1980) was serving as Chargé d'affaires ad interim when the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba in January 1961. On January 3, 1961, in a 1 a.m. telegram, the U.S. embassy in Cuba reported receipt of a diplomatic note from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations indicating that the size of the American diplomatic and consular presence in Habana must be cut to 11 persons within 48 hours. Daniel Braddock, the U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Cuba, reported that a staff of that size could not maintain a useful operation and recommended breaking relations. President Dwight Eisenhower held a meeting at 9 a.m. the same day to discuss how to respond to the Cuban note. Even though there was some sentiment to move with more deliberation, President Eisenhower decided to break relations and ordered Secretary of State Christian Herter to take that action as soon as possible. 87. [FRANCE] Jules Lemaitre (1853-1914) French critic and dramatist. Lemaître was born in Vennecy, Loiret. He became a professor at the University of Grenoble in 1883, but was already well known for his literary criticism, and in 1884 he resigned his position to devote his time to literature. He succeeded Jean-Jacques Weiss as drama critic of the Journal des Débats, and subsequently filled the same office on the Revue des Deux Mondes. His literary studies were collected under the title of Les Contemporains (7 series, 1886-1899), and his dramatic feuilletons as impressions de théàtre (10 series, 1888-1898). His sketches of modern authors show great insight and unexpected judgment as well as gaiety and originality of expression. He published two volumes of poetry: Les Médaillons (1880) and Petites orientales (1883); also some volumes of contes, among them En marge des vieux livres (1905). 88. [THEATRE] Leon Volterra - larger-than-life theatre impressario from Paris. Known also for his stable of race horses and the Chateau Volterra in Saint-Tropez. The origins of Chateau Volterra are marvelously shrouded in mystery and touched with romance. It is generally accepted that construction of the Chateau began in 1906, took six years to build. In 1926, the property passed into the hands of Monsieur Leon Volterra, a larger-than-life theatre impressario from Paris who, during a visit to Saint-Tropez (already a gathering place for the stars of the day) was swept off his feet by Simone, a fisherman's daughter. They were married within the year. Monsieur Volterra was manager of four theatres in Paris: the Casino de Paris, the Theatre de Paris, the Theatre Marigny and the Lido. He also orchestrated the careers of stars Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier, directed the Folies Bergere, created the Luna Park at Porte-Maillot and owned a stable of race horses. In its heyday the 1930s and early 1940s Chateau Volterra saw a constant flow of well-known actors and artists, several of whom were semi-resident, and a stream of spectacular-looking chorus girls. Among the celebrity guests were Raimu, Josphine Baker, Colette and Jean Cocteau. The war years brought frequent visits from prominent figures of the Resistance. Interesting letter about how the theatre tickets control was done by Societe des Auteurs, a French professional association collecting payments of artists' rights and distributing the rights to the to the original songwriters, composers, and music publishers. Offered here is a postmarked envelope. 1900, hand-addressed by Morton [not signed] to Lola Greene Baldwin (1860-1957) who was one of the first policewomen in the United States. In 1908, she was sworn in by the City of Portland, Oregon as Superintendent of the Women's Auxiliary to the Police Department for the Protection of Girls (later renamed the Women's Protective Division), with the rank of detective. 95. [Suffragist] Sallie W. Hovey (1872-1932) Charity Worker and Suffragist from Portsmouth, NH. In 1913 Sallie was elected President of the Woman's Suffrage Association in Portsmouth. She ran the organization from her home at 214 State Street, and was active both on the state and national levels of the movement. Sallie W. Hovey was the New Hampshire representative to the national board of the National Woman’s Party, and she picketed the 1920 Republican convention in Chicago, where, as is mentioned in The Suffragist, she was pulled aside by the governor of New Hampshire and commended for her work. In 1924 Sallie wrote a book titled The Rehabilitation of Eve that was published by Hyman-McGee. There is little known about the book other than it was 214 pages and was considered a feminist manifesto. Sallie, beyond fighting for women’s right to vote, remained active in the women’s rights movement and became part of the 1924 Valentine’s Day delegation to Washington, D.C. to visit President Coolidge, where she helped champion the Equal Rights Amendment. Sallie was photographed there with other women of the National Woman’s Party. Offered here is a July 1931, 2 full ALS, written from Eliot, Maine. She lived in Eliot the last two years of her life. This letter talks about being sued by Emery. In 1931 Sallie was involved in Emery v. Hovey, a case brought before the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Emery had earlier sued Sallie in Maine for the same issue, and the court had ruled against Emery. The New Hampshire court refused to hear the case again. Interesting letter about her court trial, saying that plaintiff's lawyers were dishonest. She says that one of the opposing lawyers was so disgusted by the opposing lawyers that he came over to her side to help her. Fine..............400-600

[RELIGION] Pierre Simon de Dreux-Breze (1811-1893) Priest since 1825 , Vicar General and Canon Emeritus of Paris, he distinguished himself as a preacher, and was appointed Bishop of Moulins October 28, 1849, by the President of the Republic Called to Rome by Pope Pius IX on 7 January 1850, it was dedicated to Our Lady of Paris on 14 April and took possession of his see on 1 May. Near Dom Prosper Gueranger, he established the Roman rite in his diocese a pastoral letter by the 21 November 1853 and was a promoter of the Gregorian chant. [internet translation]. Educated in Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821. Entering a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame, where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds. Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits' strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time in France. Despite painful controversy with his superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of Paris, devoting himself to other works. He died a saintly death, and thousands followed the remains of the "Apostle of Paris" to his grave. VG..........200-300

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and becoming known as a war hero. Shortly after losing the primary, Douglas resigned from the Chicago City Council and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a private at the age of 50, one of the oldest men in Marine Corps history to do so. He was "subversive activity and tendency" which was based upon information received from G2-Army Intelligence that portrayed him as "pro-Nazi" [per FBI]. Arrested with Kenneth Goff for placing placards around front lawn of Russian Embassy in Washington DC. Lohbeck was Editor of Christian Nationalist Crusade magazine The Cross and the Flag (1947-1948). In 1951 Lohbeck ran for U.S. House of Representatives from the 11th Congressional District in Missouri on Christian Nationalist Crusade ticket. 112. [ENGLAND] Benjamin Boothroyd (1768 – 1836) English Independent minister and Hebrew scholar. Born at Warley Town, in the parish of Halifax, Yorkshire, Booth was the son of a shoemaker there. He was sent to the village school, leaving it when six years old. He helped his father to make shoes for a time, but when about 14 years old he ran away. In Lancashire he found work with a Methodist; and later returned to Warley to superintend his father's trade. In 1790 he was chosen minister at Pontefract. Ordained there, he succeeded in filling his chapel and a new one was built. He also opened a shop as a bookseller and printer. 114. [AIR FORCE] Edward Air Force Base cover, postmarked Mar. 4, 1976. Signed by the test pilots Geo. Larson and C.C. Bock Jr. This cover was carried on that test flight 3 March 76. This test flight was for the initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1 bomber. George W. Larson (1940-2008) US Air Force pliot. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1962. He retired in 1992 as a U.S. Air Force Major General. From August 1972 to July 1978 he served with Strategic Air Command’s 4200th Test and Evaluation Squadron representing Strategic Air Command (known as SAC) in initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1. He eventually amassed more than 5,000 flying hours in 38 different Air Force aircraft. Charles C. Bock Jr. (1940-2008) Col. Bock had a long and distinguished United States Air Force career as a bomber pilot, fighter pilot, test pilot, and a military astronaut designee. Col. 115. Sam Bartlett (1752-1821) American patriot, and a noted silversmith from Concord, Mass. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Bible Society, a member of the Cambridge Humane Society, and also from 1795-1820 the elected Register of Deeds for Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Deafened by cannon fire during the Boston massacre, he gave up his acedemic studies and became a smith. He worked from circa 1775 to 1795 as a silversmith in Concord Mass.. Although he worked in the town for two decades, Bartlett's most active period in Concord seems to have been between 1785 and 1795. With the aid of journeyman silversmith Joseph Lasinby Brown, of Concord, Bartlett executed communion silver commissions for three towns in Middlesex County, and produced domestic silver for resale and wholesale markets. At the end of the period, he was elected register of deeds for Middlesex County and moved to Cambridge, retiring from the role of silversmith. Bartlett marked 12 pieces of communion silver, including three flagons, one tankard and eight cups. About 25 pieces of Bartlett's domestic hollowware are known, including canns, porringers, creampots, and a unique miniature teapot. In addition, Bartlett marked teaspoons, tablespoons, ladles, and shoe buckles. Offered here is a 1820 Charlestown, Mass. document concerning Henry Van Voorhees of Charlestown Morocco manufacturer. 116. Payson Williston (1764-1856) First Minister at Easthampton, Ma. . Payson was born in West Haven CT. and was the son of Rev. Noah Williston and Hannah Payson. He entered the ministery under the teachings of Dr. Trumball of New Haven CT. and attend Yale College from 1779 through 1783. Before he entered college he spent a short spell in a Militia fighting in the Revolutionary war. Payson was licensed to preach at twenty one years of age, but did not settle into his final role of Pastor of Easthampton until he was twenty six. He became the first Pastor of Easthampton on Aug 13 , 1789, when he was ordained with his father present. He spent forty years as Pastor of Easthampton. In 1790 he married Sarah Birdseye, daughter of Rev. Nathan Birdseye of Stratford CT. Together they had five children; Maria, John Payson, Samuel, Nathan Birdseye and Sarah. In 1805 he traveled to the settlements in New York to teach his ministries and in 1833 at the age of seventy requested to be relieved of his duties as Pastor of Easthampton, which he was granted. Payson past on at the age of ninety two, on January 30th, 1856. Payson Williston, was the minister in Easthampton’s only church. Payson was a stern, old-fashioned New England preacher, with strong Calvinist leanings. Offered here is a 1846, 3pp, folded stampless letter from Payson Williston to his son Nathan B. 118. [NAVAL HISTORY] Samuel Gerrish (1742-1807) Capt. Samuel Gerrish was the captain of the Brigantine Aurora in service to the continental forces. The brigantine had eight cannons. The ship was captured by the HM Frigate Cerberus on May 14, 1780. Captain Gerrish was held at Mill Prison near Plymouth, England beginning July 25, 1780, he escaped December 28, 1780. He survived the war. He died November 12, 1807 at age 65. How did Gerrish escape? We found the following account written by a fellow prisoner - "Captain Samuel Gerrish made his escape over the wall into the French prison. He remained in the French prison all night and went off about eight o'clock this morning. We were informed that Captain Gerrish got the French barber to dress his hair this morning in the prison. A little while after, Mr. Cowdry with some French officers came into the yard, and when they retired Captain Gerrish placed himself among them, and went out bowing to the Agent who did not know him. He has not been heard of since. The Agent ordered all the prisoners shut up at noon. After dinner we were all called over, but no Captain Gerrish. The Agent is pretty good-natured. Mr. Saurey brought us our money, and says he has enough for us all winter. " Offered here is a Signed document, Kittery [Maine], Feb. 9, 1775, approx. 6 x 7.5 in. This is a receipt signed by Gerrish who receives payment from Capt. Robert Follett who was also an interesting person. Robert Follett (1737-1780) was also a physician. He Commanded a company of Artillery at Kittery Point, Me., by return of Nov. 5, 1775. Was appointed Master of the Continental frigate, "Raleigh" Capt. T. Thompson, June 24, 1776; was discharged about Jan. 1, 1777. On the verso Follett pay John Randel money, 1775. The USS Raleigh was one of thirteen ships that the Continental Congress authorized for the Continental Navy in 1775. Following her capture in 1778, she served in the Royal Navy as HMS Raleigh. 119. [FRANCE] Jérôme Marie Champion of Cicé (1735-1810) Ordained priest in 1761, he was bishop of Rodez from 1770 to 1781 and archbishop of Bordeaux from 1781 to 1801. He emigrated to England during the Revolution. After the Concordat of 1801, he was archbishop of Aix and Arles from 1802 to 1810.
On his return from exile in 1802, Eugene immediately became acquainted with the archbishop and befriended him. Louis XVI selected Champion de Cice, in place of Barantin, as keeper of the seals; an office which, since the times of cardinal de Biragnd, who had done so much harm to France (1570-78), no minister had ever held. This nomination displeased many of the extreme parties; but Champion maintained his position from 1789 till November, 1790, when he resigned it, having, meanwhile, addressed to the national assembly several memoirs on the royal prerogatives. Afterwards the archbishop of Bordeaux was obliged to go into foreign countries (being in danger of persecution), where he lived ten years; but this exile ended by his submission to pope Pius VII, after which he was appointed archbishop of Aix, by the first consul, and directed all his attention to the erection of charitable establishments and schools. He was the author of the draft declaration of rights in 24 articles which served as a basis for the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen of 1789. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (French: Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen de 1789), set by France's National Constituent Assembly in 1789, is a human civil rights document from the French Revolution. The Declaration was drafted by the Abbé Sieyès and the Marquis de Lafayette, in consultation with Thomas Jefferson. Influenced by the doctrine of "natural right", the rights of man are held to be universal: valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. It became the basis for a nation of free individuals protected equally by the law. It is included in the beginning of the constitutions of both the Fourth French Republic (1946) and Fifth Republic (1958) and is still current. Inspired by the Enlightenment philosophers, the Declaration was a core statement of the values of the French Revolution and had a major impact on the development of freedom and democracy in Europe and worldwide.
The Declaration, together with Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Bill of Rights, inspired in large part the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The last article of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was adopted on the 26 of August 1789 by the National Constituent Assembly, during the period of the French Revolution, as the first step toward writing a constitution for France. Inspired by the Enlightenment, the original version of the Declaration was discussed by the representatives on the basis of a 24 article draft proposed by the sixth bureau[clarify], led by Jérôme Champion de Cicé. The draft was later modified during the debates. A second and lengthier declaration, known as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1793, was written in 1793 but never formally adopted. 128. [WORLD WAR 2] Dr. Ralph D. Bennett (1900-1994) His career was varied and most distinguished. He served as a professor of physics at M. I.T; as a naval officer, responsible for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington; and director of the Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory near Livermore, Calif., for the General Electric Co. He subsequently became V.P. and director of research for Martin Marietta. Dr. Bennett was a man uniquely placed to bring about significant changes in the way the Navy handled its research and development in those early years. Having both a Captain's rank and a respected technical background, he played a major role in the development of the Military-civilian partnership at NOL, and saw its use accepted universally in the rest of the Navy's R&D management. The Navywide system of Commander/Technical Director management owes its origins to Dr. Bennett. Offered here is an ink signed memorandum from Bennett to Capt. L.W. Scan 2129. [FILM] Dominic Frontiere (1931-2017) American composer, arranger, and jazz accordionist. He is known for composing the theme and much of the music for the television series The Outer Limits. At age twelve, he played a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. After a period with a big band in the late 1940s and early 50s, Frontiere moved to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at UCLA. He eventually became musical director at 20th Century Fox. He scored several films under the tutelage of Alfred and Lionel Newman, while also recording jazz music. An association with director and producer Leslie Stevens led to several projects, such as his innovative blend of music and sound effects for The Outer Limits. He scored several iconic themes of the '60's such as The Rat Patrol, Branded, The Flying Nun, and for producer Quinn Martin The Invaders, The Fugitive, and Twelve O'Clock High. After scoring for TV shows, he went on to compose the music for the Clint Eastwood film Hang 'Em High. The title theme for that movie became a top-10 hit for the group Booker T. & the M.G.'s. He also composed the soundtrack to the 1971 motorcycle documentary On Any Sunday, which featured Steve McQueen and was directed by Bruce Brown. Frontiere became head of the music department at Paramount Pictures in the early 1970s, where he again worked on television and film scores, while concurrently orchestrating popular music albums for, among others, Chicago. Examples of Frontiere's sweeping, cinematic orchestrations appear in the opening and closing songs of the 1977 album Nether Lands by Dan Fogelberg. He won a Golden Globe for the score to the 1980 film The Stunt Man. He also composed a jingle for the studio's television division. In 1986, Frontiere was incarcerated for nine months in a federal penitentiary after scalping tickets to the 1980 Super Bowl, which he obtained through his then-wife, Los Angeles Rams owner Georgia Frontiere. He was estimated to have scalped as many as 16,000 tickets, making a half million dollars in profit that he failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service. Frontiere pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year and one day in prison, three years probation, and fined $15,000 for failing to report income from the sale of the tickets and for lying to the IRS. Georgia Frontiere filed for divorce shortly after Dominic's release from prison. OFFERED HERE is a 1965 contract for composer for the movie BILLIE starring Patty Duke. Also signed by Milton Ebbins (1912–2008) Film executive, songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie") and composer. Ebbins helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural Ball and the subsequent 1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In May of 1962, Ebbins escorted a very late Marilyn Monroe to Madison Square Garden where she famously — and breathlessly — sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He was also the man that Lawford called after speaking to Monroe the night of her death in August of 1962. Ebbins was one of the few allowed inside the White House after the JFK assassination. As the link between Washington and Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy family patriarch and former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy navigate through the movie business, not only keeping him apprised of his son-in-law’s career moves but at one point advising him against purchasing United Artists’ movie studio. At the time of his death, Ebbins was working with his friend, actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO project about the Kennedy assassination. Ebbins music career began in 1936, he formed his own orchestra, then became music director at CBS, and went to New York in 1938, joining an advertising agency's radio department. He also had been a road manager for the Jack Jenny and Count Basie orchestras, and then a personal manager. He left his career as bandleader and became a talent manager, rising to become one of Hollywood’s top personal managers, guiding the careers of Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine and singer Vic Damone. Because of Ebbins’ musical background and his adeptness at arranging scores, he had a knack for picking hit songs for his clients. He also represented actresses Elizabeth Montgomery and Patty Duke, comedian Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford, who Ebbins managed for 35 years. Signed in the final page 11. [WORLD WAR 2 NAVAL] George Frederick Hussey Jr. (1894-1983) was United States Navy Vice admiral during World War II, who served as the Chief of Naval Ordnance from December 1943 to September 1947. During the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hussey served with the USS Hopkins within directing the off-shore patrol off Hawaii. Hussey was ordered to Washington, D.C., where he was appointed the director of production within the Bureau of Ordnance. In December 1943, Hussey succeeded Rear admiral William H. P. Blandy and became the Chief of the Bureau. In this capacity, he was responsible for the directing of development and production of Naval arms during World War II. Hussey was decorated with the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his service during the War and finally retired from the Navy in September 1947. 133. [BRITISH NAVAL] Sir Eustace Henry William Tennyson d'Eyncourt, 1st Baronet KCB FRS[1] (1868-1951) was a British naval architect and engineer. As Director of Naval Construction for the Royal Navy, 1912–1924, he was responsible for the design and construction of some of the most famous British warships. He was also chairman of the Landship Committee at the Admiralty, which was responsible for the design and production of the first military tanks to be used in warfare. 135. [U.S. NAVAL] Capt. Paul Cassard (1891-1972) Navy officer who served in both World Wars. In 1941 Captain Cassard was the officer who welcomed Winston Churchill on the British battleship Duke of York off the Virginia Capes and escorted him to Washington for his conference with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was born in Prince Frederick, Md., graduated from the Naval Academy in 1913 and served in World War I with a destroyer force based in Queenstown, Ireland. In World War II he was as signed to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington and to New York headquarters of the Eastern Sea Frontier. He retired in 1950, at which time he was president of the Navy board of review of discharges and dismissals. Offered here is a TLS, Navy Department, 12 April 1948, 1p. Written to Philip J. Philbin, US Congressman from Massachusetts. Cassard, at this time was President, Board of Review, Discharges and Dismissals. Concerns the discharge of Francis A. Gregg. 136. [PORTRAIT] Samuel Latham Mitchill (1764-1831) was an American physician, naturalist, and politician who lived in Plandome, New York. Mitchill taught chemistry, botany, and natural history at Columbia College from 1792 until 1801 and was a founding editor of The Medical Repository, the first medical journal in the United States. In addition to his Columbia lectures on botany, zoology, and mineralogy, Mitchill collected, identified, and classified many plants and animals, particularly aquatic organisms. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1797. From 1807 to 1826, he taught at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York and then helped organize the short-lived Rutgers Medical College of New Jersey, which he served as vice president until 1830. While at Columbia, Mitchill developed a fallacious theory of disease, which however resulted in his promotion of personal hygiene and improved sanitation. 137. [WORLD WAR 2 NAVAL] John H. Newton (1881-1948) Commander, Cruisers, Scouting Force at the outbreak of war. At the moment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was in tactical command of the Lexington task force, which was on the way to deliver aircraft to Midway. After war broke out, the Lexington force was given to the more senior Brown, and Newton commanded its screen. Relieved before the end of the year, he was given command of the South Pacific Area in June 1944, when it had lost almost all strategic relevance. In 1855, she and her sister Sarah Findlater co-produced a book of translations of German hymns titled Hymns from the Land of Luther (1854, 1855, 1858 & 1862). In 1875, while living in Switzerland, she produced another book of translations called Alpine Lyrics. 141. Marta Mitrovich (1909-2002) American poet and actress. Born in Yugoslavia, Mitrovich lived in London during World War II and the Blitz, relocating in 1941 to the US, where her career as a stage and screen actress included the 1953 version of Titanic. In the mid-1970s (the actual date varies depending on whom you talk to) she founded the current incarnation of Laguna Poets, California’s longest running weekly poetry series, bringing major poets like Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others to read in Orange County. Mitrovich’s passion for poetry was the spark that ignited Laguna Poets and the dozens of readings that imitated it (knowingly and unknowingly) around Orange County and LA, and was matched only by her passion for free speech. (In the 1950s, she told the House UnAmerican Activities Committee to “stuff it.”). Mitrovich retired in to Garbo-like seclusion in 1990, disappearing near-entirely. 144. [FRANCE] Jean-Barthélémy Hauréau (1812-1896) French historian and writer. Born in Paris, he was educated at the Louis-le-Grand and Bourbon colleges in his native city, and won high honours at his public examination. After graduating he became a journalist, and soon was a contributor to several democratic papers: La Tribune, Le National, Le Droit, and La Revue du Nord; at Le National, he was praised by Théophile Gautier as the "tribune" of romanticism. At the age of twenty he published a series of apologetic studies on the Montagnards &emdash; in later years, regretting his youthful enthusiasm, he attempted to destroy the studies. In 1838 he took the chief editorship of the Courrier de la Sarthe and was appointed librarian of the city of Le Mans , which position he retained until 1845, when he was dismissed on account of comments of his on the daring speech of the Mayor of le Mans to the Duke of Nemours. He returned to Paris and once more became one of the editors of Le National. At this time he seemed destined for a political career, and after the revolution of February 24, 1848 was elected to the National Assembly; but close contact with revolutionary men and ideas cooled his old ardour. Throughout his life he opposed innovation, not only in politics and religion, but also in literature. After the coup d'état he resigned his position as director of the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale , to which he had been appointed in 1848, and refused to accept an administrative post until after the fall of the empire. Having acted as director of the national printing press from 1870 to 1881, he retired, but in 1893 accepted the post of director of the Fondation Thiers. He was also a member of the council of improvement of the École des Chartes. From the time of his appointment to the Bibliothèque Nationale up to the last days of his life he was engaged in making abstracts of all the medieval Latin writings (many anonymous or of doubtful attribution) relating to philosophy, theology, grammar, Canon law, and poetry, carefully noting on cards the first words of each passage. After his death this index of incipits , arranged alphabetically, was presented to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and a copy was placed in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale. Attached to the Radical Party, he was a member of the Cantal, Minister of Commerce under the Popular Front and representing radicals National Council of the Resistance, before heading L'Aurore. Trained as a lawyer, member of the Radical Party, he was elected MP Cantal in 1924, reelected in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He then became Minister of Trade in the Popular Front government . He takes as his Chief of Staff wife Suzanne Basdevant-Bastid, professor of international law, daughter of lawyer Jules Basdevant , who was President of the International Court of Justice in The Hague. In 1941, the Vichy government dismisses the mandate of General Counsel. Paul Bastid while campaigning in the Resistance and the General Committee of studies (CGE), was formed in 1942 in Lyon, at his home. He was one of the greatest American inventors of the 20th century. 147. [KENTUCY PIONEER] 1807 Hardin County [Kentucky] document signed by Samuel Givens. Robert Bleakley and William Montgomery appeared before Justice of the Peace Samuel Givens concerning a debt owned to them by Hensby Reed. Signed on the verso by Saml. Perrcifull. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. Partly separated at middle fold otherwise in very good + condition. Not signed by Bleakley or Montgomery. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY was born near Aucknaclay, Ireland in 1776 and fled to America. arriving in Hardin County, Kentucky about 1801. With another Irishman, Robert Bleakley, opened a store in Elizabethtown. Their establishment is said to have been the first such operation in the pioneer village that could ready be called a "store." Montgomery was an Orangeman, who was engaged in the rebellion In Ireland in 1798. He was arrested and confined in a prison from which men were taken and executed daily He was released from prison through the efforts of his aunt, who was married to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on the condition that he would emigrate to America. Wm. Montgomery and Bleakley opened a dry goods store. In 1806 they hired the father of Abraham Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat down the Mississippi river with their merchan°dise to be sold in New Orleans. They paid Tom Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit of 13 pounds in gold. Their store account books show Tom Lincoln buying “two twists of tobacco & one pint of whisky.” And the books also show that in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying spree, purchasing silk, linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons, etc. Earlier that year he had purchased an aristocratic beaver hat & a pair of silk suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this time, courting his future bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln’s mother]. After the wedding he made his home in a cabin close to the courthouse in Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their store, knives, forks, spoons, thread, needles, silk & tobacco.................Min. Bid $100

148. [RARE PHOTOGRAPH] vintage 1962 color photograph of Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson delivering speech at Rice University on Sept. 12, 1962. He was introducing President Kennedy who was to given his famous Moon speech. This rare photo is signed "W" by the photographer who was - WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Except for some chemical surface faults in very good condition. The surface fauts only show when held at certain angle. Charles Helm (1777-1831) served in the Kentucky House in 1806, 1809-1811 and the Kentucky Senate from 1812-1816. He was also a veteran of the War of 1812.
Samuel Bush (1772-1812) became the Uncle of Abe Lincoln.
John Vertrees (1741-1803) he was a Captain solider in the Revolutionary War, one of 175 Virginia voluntees called by the Indians “Long Knives”, with George Rogers Clark in the conquest of the Northwest Territory (1778-9), fighting at Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Vincennes, Chilloocpthe and Pickaway; and was a captain of a company of soldiers with Col. John Floyd against Indians in 1782, following their incursions into Hardin and other counties in 1781.
Stephen Rawlings (1749-1830) Private Stephen Rawlings, served in the American Revolution from 18 July until 21 August of 1780. He was in a Militia under the command of Col William Linn, in Captain John Swan's Company. At this time, George Rogers Clark was the Commanding General. Stephen was on the payroll of the Jefferson Militia under actual service in repelling an invasion of the enemy Indians, the expedition against the enemy, under General George Rogers Clark, from the 21st of October 1782 until the 6th of November 1782.
James Crutcher (1755-1823) served as a corporal in Company 8, 2nd Virginia Regiment from June 1, 1777, to January 1778. He fought in the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown and wintered at Valley Forge in 1777-78 in his 2nd Virgina Regiment service.
BEN HELM (1767-1858) known as "Kitchen Knife Whetted on a Brick." He was a surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts; major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was a partner, in the general store business, with Duff Green [later statesman] in the early frontier days of Kentucky. It is likely that young Abe Lincoln visited his store often in his early youth.*******************************
150. Theodatus Garlick (1805-1884) American surgeon and sculptor. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Garlick was one of the world's first plastic surgeons. Along with colleague H.A. Ackley, he was known for successfully artificially propagating trout and other fish. He was also a talented fine art sculptor. It has been suggested that Garlick made the first daguerreotype photograph taken in the United States, and later the first daguerreotype taken in the shade. Rare ALS, Cleveland, 1867, to E.A. Brown. 151. [REV. WAR] Luke Drury (1737-1811) Patriot. He was a farmer and grist mill operator. He served as the town's constable, deputy sheriff, collector, assessor, selectman, and representative to the Massachusetts General Court. In 1757 he became a member of the town's militia during the French and Indian War. In 1773 Drury was a member of a Grafton committee organized to give bonds to the Indian trustees so that the town would come into possession of the tribe's "School Lots and meeting house with the four acres of Land by Sd. meeting house and Burying place." He captained the minute-men at the Lexington and Concord alarms and at Bunker Hill, and served the course of the Revolution. In 1786 Drury likely participated in Shay's Rebellion. He served on Worcester's "committee of the people" and may have participated in the attempt to take the Springfield arsenal. Imprisoned for his rebel activities "as a person dangerous to the state," in 1787, he was released and in June elected to the Massachusetts General Court. In early fall of that same year, Drury served on a committee of Hassanamisco Indian affairs. He removed to Marlborough in 1803, where he died in 1811. Offered here is a Manuscript Document [Deed] Signed by Drury on the front. The last 9 lines were also written by Drury. Signed on the back by Sam Bartlett (1752-1821) American patriot, and a noted silversmith from Concord, Mass. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Bible Society, a member of the Cambridge Humane Society, and also from 1795-1820 the elected Register of Deeds for Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Deafened by cannon fire during the Boston massacre, he gave up his acedemic studies and became a smith. He worked from circa 1775 to 1795 as a silversmith in Concord Mass.. Although he worked in the town for two decades, Bartlett's most active period in Concord seems to have been between 1785 and 1795. With the aid of journeyman silversmith Joseph Lasinby Brown, of Concord, Bartlett executed communion silver commissions for three towns in Middlesex County, and produced domestic silver for resale and wholesale markets. At the end of the period, he was elected register of deeds for Middlesex County and moved to Cambridge, retiring from the role of silversmith. Bartlett marked 12 pieces of communion silver, including three flagons, one tankard and eight cups. About 25 pieces of Bartlett's domestic hollowware are known, including canns, porringers, creampots, and a unique miniature teapot. In addition, Bartlett marked teaspoons, tablespoons, ladles, and shoe buckles. Offered here is a 1820 Charlestown, Mass. document concerning Henry Van Voorhees of Charlestown Morocco manufacturer. 152. [KENTUCKY] Very rare 1811 pioneer manuscript document from the Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky area signed by several interesting men. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. Signed by the following on the front side: Wm. Withers, Ben Helm, James Crutcher, Christopher Bush, Samuel Stevenson, Adam Miller. Also signed on the verso by Christopher Miller and Daniel Waide. See some biographical information on these pioneers below.William Withers (1747-1821) born in Virginia he was a Revolutionary War veteran, having served as a Second Lieutenant in the Fauquier County Militia in the Company of Capt. Bronaugh. He came to Kentucky in 1793.

MAJOR JAS. CRUTCHER - Pioneer. Came to Kentucky from Virginia with his father & family, arriving at the Falls of the Ohio in early 1780s, and later moved to Bardstown. In 1796, he moved to Elizabethtown and became one of the earliest merchants there. Served terms in the legislature and came close to being elected lieutenant governor. He was at the battle of New Orleans as aide to General Thomas, commander of the Kentucky troops. He was involved in the flatboat business and it was said that after delivering a cargo by flatboat to New Orleans, Crutcher would walk back to Kentucky. On these trips he carried his money in a close fitting deer skin vest which he wore under his shirt.
Christopher Bush Sr. (1730?-1813) he and his descendents played an important role in Hardin County history. He is said to have been born in Holland about 1730 Íand came to America circa 1750, and to Kentucky at the end of the Revolutionary War. His daughter, Sarah, was to marry Thomas Lincoln [Abraham Lincoln's father] after Nancy Hanks died. Abe was about 10 years old when Sarah became his step-mother, and she is credited with instilling in him the desire to make something of himself. Bush Sr. was illiterate therefore it appears that Crutcher signed for him.
Samuel Stevenson - came to Elizabethtown in 1806. He taught school at Hardin Academy for about 2 years. Considered a good teacher, he was afterwards a merchant and served a term in the Ky. State Legislature.
Adam Miller - he was captured by Indians, along with his brother Christopher in 1782. The raiding party which captured Adam and Christopher consisted of Delawares and Shawnees. Adam was taken by the Delawares, Christopher was taken by the Shawnees. Both were taken to Indian towns northwest of the Ohio River. After 7 years Adam was exchanged and returned to his family.
Christopher Miller - was about 15 years old when captured by Indians. He lived with the Shawnee Tribe for 14 years. Being an active young man, he soon became habituated to the manners and customs and mode of life of the Indians; dressed as they did and spoke their language as his native tongue, and by many it was thought doubtful whether he ever would be returned to the whites. He was in the same tribe with young Tecumseh and they in their youth were friends and playmates. Miller has told of "many a wrestle with Tecumseh." Adam Miller was serving as a spy for General Anthony Wayne in June, 1794. In what is now Drake County, Ohio, Adam was dispatched with a party of spies to bring in an Indian prisoner for questioning. The party found three Indians in camp, preparing a meal. They set out to kill two of the Indians and capture the third. They succeeded in the plan and Adam discovered the prisoner to be his long-lost brother Christopher. Christopher sulked and refused to talk for several days, but on the promise of release, agreed to join Wayne's army as a spy. He kept his word. Wayne sent him on an important peace mission to the Indians, promising him a reward from the government. The following is an account of that mission. After the defeat of General St. Clair the Indians let loose upon the Northwestern Territory. General Washington was distressed and it frustrated his plans for the safety of the thinly settled country in the North-west and it was determined to have a sufficient army to be led by Gen. Anthony Wayne but Congress and delayed the campaign for nearly two years. On the 14th day of August 1794, Gen. Wayne, having all things in readiness to move on the Indians, Wayne, under the instruction of Washington, decided to give the enemy a chance for peace before attacking. They had to find the right man to carry the white flag, and Christopher Miller being lately returned from the Indians and speeaking their language, Armed with a flag and this message Miller set out for the Indian camp, arriving at nightfall. In a few minutes his arrival was known all over the entire camp. Then it was, "Kill the runaway, burn him". Miller, knowing the character of Indians, showed no signs of fear but in a loud and defiant voice, in their own tongue, told them that he had brought a flag of peace and as for burning him they had better be a little careful as the Black Snake, meaning General Wayne, had 8 of their warriors in prison and if he was not returned safely in three days that their 8 men would be shot. Immediately a pow-wow was held in which it was determined that Miller should be burned at the stake in the morning. But Tecumseh, a young Shawnee chief, and a friend of Miller, changed their minds. The Indians sent back their answer with Miller. If Gen. Wayne \waited for ten days and then sent Miller to them again they would give him their decision but if Wayne advanced they would give battle. Miller reached Gen. Wayne with the answer on the 16th day of August 1794. General Wayne rightly concluded that the 10 days asked for by the Indians was simply a scheme to get time and having everything in readiness immediately set out against the Indian camp. Wayne obtained a complete victory, the loss on both sides was considerable. The battle was fought on the 29th day of August 1794. Christopher Miller was in that engagement.

155. [SPILLANE] Elliot Graham - was a publicist at E.P.Dutton who had worked on almost two dozen Spillane books. One of them, "The Girl Hunters," is dedicated to Mr. Graham. Mr. Graham recalled the time an editor had to restore each of 163 deleted commas in a Spillane manuscript before the author would let the book be published. And at Mr. Spillane's first appearance at a Dutton sales conference, the author steered the conversation away from matters literary. "He said if you ever get into a fight, punch the person hard, right in the nose,and all the blood and pain will take the starch out of him," Mr. Graham recalled. "After Mickey left, everybody said, 'What are we doing publishing that guy?'" The answer, of course, is that "publishing that guy" was like minting money. "I, the Jury," Mr. Spillane's first book, was the first mystery to sell more than six million copies in America. 156. [ART] Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate, title unknown, c. 1920s , 5-3/4 x 4-5/8 in. Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art show to the US, and traveled with Davies to Europe to select art for the occasion (which became the 1913 Armory Show). Negligee was probably done c. 1920 when Kuhn, Davies, and a few others in the US were experimenting with modernism as they developed their printmaking skills. Kuhn successfully continued printmaking and painting in a modernist mode for the next 30 or so years. VG...................2000-3000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European Modernism. Walt Kuhn is best remembered today for his key role in planning the Armory Show. Ironically, a man who was in the forefront of the modern movement and was seen as an advocate of adventurous new art in 1913 came to be labelled, because of his on-going commitment to representation, a conservative artist by future generations of art historians. Nevertheless, he holds a place in American art history as a skilled cartoonist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter. Although he destroyed many of his early paintings, his works that remain today are powerful and are a part of most major American art collections. His portraits of circus and vaudeville entertainers are some of the most memorable, confidently painted works of twentieth-century American art. They are reminiscent of commedia dell'arte actor portraits done by the French masters centuries earlier. The Tragic Comedians (1916) in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and The White Clown (1929) in the collection of the National Gallery of Art are intense, arresting images and are among his most respected paintings. 161. [MAINE] Ralph Owen Brewster (1888 - 1961) was an American politician from Maine. Brewster, a Republican, was solidly conservative, a close confidant of Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and antagonist of Howard Hughes. Brewster came to national attention due to his opposition to the commercial interests of Howard Hughes , America's wealthiest man at the time. Brewster was chairman of a special Senate committee investigating defense procurement during World War II. He claimed concern that Hughes had received $40 million from the Defense Department without actually delivering the aircraft he had contracted to provide, but Brewster may have had an ulterior motive. Incidentally, Hughes stated that the H-4 Hercules cost far more, with the balance coming from his own funds. Hughes aggressively combated the inquirer, alleging corruption. Memoirs by Hughes right-hand man Noah Dietrich and syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson each sketched Brewster as, in Dietrich's words, "an errand boy for Juan Trippe and Pan American World Airways," who pushed for legislation that would give Pan Am the single-carrier international air monopoly for the U.S. The Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator portrays Brewster (played by Alan Alda) similarly, as corrupt and in the pocket of Pan Am, the rival of Hughes' TWA . Hughes spread rumors about Brewster's close association with Pan Am, alleging that he received free flights and hospitality in return for legislation such as his bill to withdraw government approval for TWA flights across the Atlantic. 163. [FRANCE] Auguste Joseph Alphonse Gratry (usually known as Joseph Gratry) (1805-1872) French author and theologian. Gratry was born at Lille and educated at the École Polytechnique of Paris. After a period of mental struggle which he has described in Souvenirs de ma jeunesse, he was ordained priest in 1832. After a stay at Strasbourg as professor of the Petit Séminaire, he was appointed director of the Collège Stanislas in Paris in 1842 and, in 1847, chaplain of the École Normale Supérieure. He became vicar-general of Orleans in 1861, professor of ethics at the Sorbonne in 1862, and, on the death of Barante, a member of the French Academy in 1867, where he occupied the seat formerly held by Voltaire. Together with others (abbé Pétitot, curé of Saint Roch, and Hyacinthe de Valroger) he reconstituted the Oratory of Jesus and of Mary Immaculate, a society of priests mainly devoted to education. Gratry was one of the principal opponents of the definition of the dogma of papal infallibility, but in this respect he submitted to the authority of the First Vatican Council. [FRANCE] Pierre Patte (1723–1814) was a French architect who was the assistant of the great French teacher of architecture, Jacques-François Blondel, whose Cours d'architecture which ran to nine volumes by 1777, he saw through the press after Blondel's death in 1774. He has been credited for having been the first to illustrate a city street plan with buildings and sewer system shown in a section view, a reference to a section he produced in 1769, though recent study has shown the irrefutable influence of a similar drawing produced by the Portuguese engineer Eugenio dos Santos in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Under the reign of Louis XV Patte theorized in the middle of the 18th century about thinking about the overall structure of the city as an urban organism where changing one aspect would affect the whole thing. 175. Conrad K. Grieb (1905-1991) was the author of Uncovering the Forces for War. In the late 1930s he was office manager of Seward Collins's American Review Bookshop in New York. During the war he served with the United States Coast Guard. His book "Uncovering the Forces for War" was a unabashedly pro-German survey of the undercover forces for war: British World Empire, World Finance, and their constant companion, Organized World Jewry. The book was published by Grieb under his Examiner imprint and distributed widely among the remnants of the post-war American far right. Grieb later authored American Manifest Destiny and the Holocausts. Offered here is a full page 1949 TLS to George Andrews Moriarty (1883-1968) American genealogist. Moriarty went to work for the U. S. State Department in the foreign service, and served in consular and secretarial roles in Fiume, Italy; Mexico City; and Guatemala. He returned to Harvard once again to study law, and received his LL.B. in 1916. He practiced law in Providence, Rhode Island and Boston, Massachusetts for over a decade, which time also included a year in the U.S. Army at the end of World War I when he was a captain in military intelligence. In 1927 he ended his career in law and devoted the remainder of his life to historical and genealogical pursuits. In 1986 the National Genealogical Society instituted a Hall of Fame for individuals that had made significant strides in the field of genealogy. In 1990 G. Andrews Moriarty was inducted into that prestigious group, having been nominated by the Genealogical Society of Utah and the American Society of Genealogists. Moriarty was known to be anti-semitic per Maine State Police and a Nazi sympathizer. MORIARTY was deeply interested in the threat of Communism in the United States. He added he believed the Jewish people were behind the Communist Party over the whole world and were using the Russians and the Communist Party to eventually gain mastery over all the world's people. He stated he was desirous of ascertaining who the sender of certain literature was and would cooperate with the FBI in every way. He stated further he would recontact writer in the event he receives any more literature, particularly if a return address accompanies the literature. Douglas Volk artist 50 signed checks178. [ART] DOUGLAS VOLK [1856-1935] AMERICAN ARTIST. Douglas was born to be an artist. His father was the famous sculptor Leonard Wells Volk and his mother Emily Barlow Volk was counsin to Senator Steven Douglas. At a young age Douglas showed an ability to draw and was taken seriously later studying with George Inness, and at age 14 took classes at the Accademia San Luca in Italy. In 1873 Volk went to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts with the Master Jean-Leon Gerome. When he returned to the U.S. he began teaching at The Cooper Institute in New York and in 1886 was founder of the Minneapolis School Of Fine Art. In 1893 Volk was chosen for the selection committee at the Columbian Expo where he exhibited three paintings and the the gold medal, his first major award. In 1899 the National Academy granted him membership. His paintings hang in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum in NY. Douglas Volk first ventured into Lincoln portraiture in 1908, and that canvas, reworked in 1917, eventually found its way into the National Gallery of Art. It also achieved a kind of anonymous familiarity between 1954 and 1968, when it was featured on the regular four-cent U.S. postage stamp. When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. It was this boy, long grown to manhood who was the paint one of the most famous portraits of Lincoln. One of his Lincoln portraits hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom in The White House. He has also composed eight concertos, several other large orchestral scores and a considerable amount of 'serious' music for brass (almost totally neglected by the brass band movement). 184. [From Walt Kuhn Estate] ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART 1962. TWO letters written in 1962 between Brenda Kuhn and William E. Woolfenden. Mostly about the Montress Gallery and the Armory Show 50th Anniversary Exhibition. William E. Woolfenden, who made it his mission to gather every artifact, photograph, scrap of paper and taped recollection he could about American artists, collectors, curators and dealers, was the director of the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. Mr. Woolfenden, who was born in Detroit and had bachelor's and master's degrees from Wayne State University, went to work for the Detroit Institute of Arts and was its director of education when the museum's director, Edgar P. Richardson, had an idea that would change both their lives. Mr. Woolfenden, who was associated with the archives from the beginning, was named assistant director in 1960, and after Mr. Richardson's retirement from the museum, he became the archives' first full-time director. During the next 19 years Mr. Woolfenden, who made Manhattan his headquarters, built what had begun as a modest depository into the world's largest archive devoted to American art, a treasure trove for scholars. 187. Bill Asher (1921-2012) American television and film producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific early television directors, producing or directing over two dozen series. With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. As a result of his early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and was hyperbolically credited in one magazine article with "inventing" the sitcom. In 1964, he began to direct episodes of Bewitched, which starred his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. Asher and Montgomery befriended President John F. 193. [THEATRE & FILM] Matty (A.E. Matthews OBE) (1869-1960) English actor who played numerous character roles on the stage and in film for eight decades. Nicknamed "Matty", he was christened Alfred Edward Matthews. He was affectionately regarded by the British public over his extraordinarily long career. From World War II until his death he enjoyed renown as one of British cinema's most famous crotchety, and sometimes rascally, old men. Matthews' other most well-known films include The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Million Pound Note (with Gregory Peck), Inn for Trouble, The Magic Box, The Ghosts of Berkeley Square and Just William's Luck. Offered here is a 2-page ALS, signed "Matty" to his friend, and fellow actor, Roland Young [1887-1953] best remembered for his role as Topper. Dated Jan. 30 , no year. "Dear Roland and Lady Roland. 195. [ART] Douglas Volk [1856-1935] AMERICAN ARTIST. Douglas was born to be an artist. His father was the famous sculptor Leonard Wells Volk and his mother Emily Barlow Volk was counsin to Senator Steven Douglas. At a young age Douglas showed an ability to draw and was taken seriously later studying with George Inness, and at age 14 took classes at the Accademia San Luca in Italy. In 1873 Volk went to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts with the Master Jean-Leon Gerome. When he returned to the U.S. he began teaching at The Cooper Institute in New York and in 1886 was founder of the Minneapolis School Of Fine Art. In 1893 Volk was chosen for the selection committee at the Columbian Expo where he exhibited three paintings and the the gold medal, his first major award. In 1899 the National Academy granted him membership. His paintings hang in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum in NY. Douglas Volk first ventured into Lincoln portraiture in 1908, and that canvas, reworked in 1917, eventually found its way into the National Gallery of Art. It also achieved a kind of anonymous familiarity between 1954 and 1968, when it was featured on the regular four-cent U.S. postage stamp. When in 1860, Lincoln sat in Leonard Volk's studio, a liittle child was running in and out. The great man took him on his knee and asked his name. It was Douglas. It was this boy, long grown to manhood who was the paint one of the most famous portraits of Lincoln. One of his Lincoln portraits hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom in The White House. 200. Jack (John Ludlow) Gould (1914-1993) American journalist and critic, who wrote commentary about television. He started as a copy boy at the New York Herald Tribune in 1932. In 1937 he moved to The New York Times, writing for the drama department and in the 1940s writing also about radio. In 1944 he became the newspaper's radio critic, and in 1948 the chief television reporter and critic. At one point he had eight people working under him. In the early 1960s he was a CBS executive for a short time but returned to the Times. Gould's columns and reviews (along with those of rival John Crosby of the Herald Tribune) were widely read by decision makers in the fledgling medium of television, and Gould had many professional and personal relationships with prominent industry figures such as Edward R. Murrow and Fred Friendly. He did not hold back harsh criticism, even when The New York Times itself produced its own public affairs program in 1963; he was aware of the potential power of television as a force for social good. 212. [ART] Louis-François Raban [1795-1870] French engraver and writer. At age 19 Raban enlisted in the artillerymen, in 1814 and participated, with the polytechnic School, in the defence of Paris. He was an avid admirer of the Emperor Napoleon and wrote a book about him under the pseudonym, the Comte de Barins. He was a member of the Secret Society of Les Saisons [very important in the 1839 Revolution]. He was arrested in the act of making bullets for the revolutionaries. Despite being an exceedingly prolific writer not only of biographical dictionaries but also 'bodice-rippers', and (as we have seen) that he tried to profit from contemporary politics to enhance his sales, he never managed to emerge from extreme poverty and died supported by his daughter at the fall of the Second Empire in 1870. "The issue of the powder plot of the Rue de Poursine was the condemnation of twenty-four individuals to various sentences of fine and imprisonment, from 300 to 3000 francs, and from four months to two years. Among the rest, Blanqui, Beaufotir, and Robier, figured as the highest mulcts, the longest terms, and each two years of surveillance at the expiration of their punishment. In November 1838, another manufactory of cartridges was discovered, and Raban, an en graver in the Palais Royal, the principal, condemned to two years in prison, two of his associates to eighteen and three months. A very large quantity of ammunition was also seized ; and every thing went to prove that the formation of secret societies to overturn the government had not ceased for an instant...." [ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT WILLIAM McKINLEY] Resolution of the Passengers aboard the SS Kronprinz Wilhelm, Sept. 23, 1901, manuscript document signed by about 185 persons from the United States, overwhelmed by a great grief in the murder of President McKinley, who was assassinated Sept. 14, 1901. This document is about 8-1/4 x 74 in. long. That's correct 74 inches long. We have not researhed any of the signatures. The SS Kronpeinz Wilhem was a German passenger liner built for the Norddeutscher Lloyd, a former shipping company now part of Hapag-Lloyd, by the AG Vulcan shipyard in Stettin, Germany (now Szczecin, Poland), in 1901. She took her name from Crown Prince Wilhelm, son of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, and was a sister ship of SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. She had a varied career, starting off as a world-record-holding passenger liner, then becoming an auxiliary warship from 1914–1915 for the Imperial German Navy, sailing as a commerce raider for a year, and then interned in the United States when she ran out of supplies. When the U.S. entered World War I, she was seized and served as a United States Navy troop transport until she was decommissioned and turned over to the United States Shipping Board, where she remained in service until she was scrapped in 1923. Cook and the other John Elder. Folds, minor edge wear, light toning-- overall quite good. An early document pair pertaining to this ship, the Brig Fountain was built in Portland, Maine around 1823, its owner being John Fox. Fox was a Maine shipowner, whose Privateer FOX was active during the Revolutionary War, and co-owned with Benjamin Titcomb (1726-1798). Bangs (Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts), informing Keyes "... In compliance with the direction of the Legislature I hereby inform you that you have been elected, agreeably to the Constitution, a Counsellor to advise His Excellency the Governor..." Folds, otherwise excellent condition. JOHN KEYES (1787-1844), the oldest of five children born to Joseph Keyes and his second wife Sarah Boyden Keyes, moved to Concord in 1811. John Keyes was a lawyer, and served as postmaster, treasurer of Middlesex County, and a state representative and senator. He was the first in a line of prominent Concord citizens, active in the political, commercial, and social life of the town. John Keyes married Ann Stow Shepard, daughter of Timothy Shepard of Hopkinton, in 1815. EDWARD D. BANGS (1790-1838) attended Harvard College (1827) and was a noted attorney. 226. [FRANCE] MARY MARQUET [b. Russia 1895; died France 1979] actress who was encouraged by Sarah Bernhardt to become an actress. She made her stage debut in "La cathédrale" by the dramatist Eugène Morand. Her real triumph soon followed with "L'Aiglon" by Edmond Rostand . She joined the Comédie Française in 1923 and was one of its most revered actress for over twenty years before being fired. In 1944, she was arrested and sent to Fresne prison , near Paris: she was accused of collaborating with the Germans during the war as well as being instrumental to her son's arrest by the Gestapo. During her trial, she admitted contacting the Vichy police in 1943 and asking them to prevent her son François from joining the Resistance. Despite a severe warning by the police, he still managed to flee to Spain but was arrested and deported to Buchenwald where he died in January 1944. Mary Marquet was acquitted in January 1945 but was not allowed to return to the Comédie Française. She resumed her career on stage and appeared in light comédies, or 'comédies de boulevard' as they are called in French. She had to wait until 1949 to appear on screen again in the very mediocre 'Le 84 prend des vacances (1950). After the mid-sixties, she almost exclusively appeared in TV movies or series. 235. Hans Baur (1897- 1993) Adolf Hitler's pilot during Hitler's political campaigns of the early 1930s. He later became Hitler's personal pilot and leader of the Reichsregierung squadron. Apprehended by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II in Europe, he was imprisoned in the USSR for ten years before being extradited to France on 10 October 1955, where he was imprisoned until 1957. He died in Herrsching, Bavaria, in 1993. Lengthy ALS written on postcard, 1976, to Dr. B.C. West. Those of you who have been in autographs for years will remember B.C. West. VG............200-300

241. [FRANCE] Pierre Émile Levasseur (1828-1911) French economist. He was born and educated in Paris, France. He began teaching in the lycée at Alençon in 1852, and in 1857 became professor of rhetoric at Besançon . He returned to Paris to become professor at the lycée Saint Louis, and in 1868 he was chosen a member of the academy of moral and political sciences, in 1872 he was appointed professor of geography, history and statistics in the College de France, and subsequently became also professor at the Conservatoire des arts et métiers and at the École libre des sciences politiques (which later became known as the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris or its widely known nickname of Sciences Po). Levasseur was one of the founders of the study of commercial geography, and became a member of the Council of Public Instruction, president of the French society of political economy and honorary president of the French geographical society. 242. [FRANCE] Henri Léon Emile Lavedan (1859-1940) French dramatist and man of letters, was born at Orléans, the son of Hubert Léon Lavedan, a well-known Catholic and liberal journalist. Lavedan contributed to various Parisian papers a series of witty tales and dialogues of Parisian life, many of which were collected in volume form. 244. Admiral George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, PC [1720-1795] British peer, naval officer and politician. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1739 and in 1742 was promoted to be commander of the Terrible bomb. In the course of 1743 he was appointed acting captain of the Kennington of 20 guns, and was officially confirmed on 19 August 1744. He commanded her in the Mediterranean till 1745, when he was advanced to the Salisbury of 50 guns. This ship, as part of the Western Fleet under Hawke and Boscawen, initially patrolled the Bay of Biscay during the War of Austrian Succession. Its ship's surgeon was James Lind, who conducted his experiments on scurvy during such a patrol in 1747. The war ended in 1748. [THEATRE] Robert Woodruff Anderson (b. 1917) is an American playwright and screenwriter, perhaps best known as the author of Tea and Sympathy, which made its Broadway debut in 1953 and was made into an MGM film in 1956. Both versions starred Deborah Kerr and John Kerr. Anderson wrote the screenplays for 1959's The Nun's Story and 1966's The Sand Pebbles. He was Oscar-nominated for the The Nun's Story as well as the 1970 screen version of his play I Never Sang for My Father. SIGNED & INSCRIBED 6.5 x 10" photo. His doctoral thesis, published in 1872, expanded on the work of Thomas Andrews, and included plots of the isotherms of carbon dioxide at high pressures. Amagat published a paper in 1877 that contradicted the current understanding at the time, concluding that the coefficient of compressibility of fluids decreased with increasing pressure. He continued to publish data on isotherms for a number of different gases between 1879 and 1882, and invented the hydraulic manometer, which was able to withstand up to 3200 atmospheres, as opposed to 400 atmospheres using a glass apparatus. In 1880 he published his Law of Partial Volumes. Amagat was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences on 9 June 1902. A unit of number density, amagat, was named after him. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society of London in 1897. The French Academy of Sciences gave him the posthumous award of the Prix Jean Reynaud for 1915. 260. [SILENT FILM] Renée Adorée (1898-1933) was a French actress who appeared in Hollywood silent movies during the 1920s. Born Jeanne de la Fonte[1] in Lille, she was the daughter of circus artists and by age five was performing with her parents. In her teens, she began acting in minor stage productions and toured Europe with her troupe. She was performing in Russia when World War I broke out and fled to London. She is most famous for her role as Melisande in the melodramatic romance and war epic The Big Parade (1925) opposite John Gilbert. It became one of MGM's all-time biggest hits and a film that historians rank as one of the best of the silent film era. In The Mating Call, a 1928 film produced by Howard Hughes, Adorée had a very brief swimming scene in the nude that caused a significant commotion at the time. 275. George Lunt (1803-1885) was an American editor, lawyer, author, and politician. George's ancestor, Henry Lunt, was one of the original settlers of Newbury (1635). His grandfather's exploits with John Paul Jones were chronicled by James Fenimore Cooper. George Lunt was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Harvard College in 1824, with special distinction in Greek, studied law, and began practice in Newburyport in 1827. In earlier life Mr. Lunt was an active member of the Whig party, and in its interests was distinguished as a public speaker. On the dissolution of that party he became a Democrat. He was elected successively representative for Newburyport and senator from Essex County in the legislature, was an active member of the convention that nominated General Zachary Taylor for the presidency, and was appointed United States District Attorney for Massachusetts under Taylor's administration. He eventually resumed the private practice of his profession, devoting his leisure to literary pursuits. When the Whigs dissolved, he joined the Democrats. Prior to and during the Civil War he was editor of the Boston Courier in conjunction with George S. Hillard. He opposed policies which would estrange the South and defended slavery. When he returned to the practice of his profession, he appeared frequently in the state courts, and was counsel before congressional committees in reference to French claims, preparing a bill and efficiently pressing it for the action of congress. Mr. Lunt's later years were marked by labors in behalf of harbors of refuge, notably at Scituate, Massachusetts, on the south shore of Boston bay. By persevering effort he succeeded in securing very considerable appropriations from congress to this end. He was a man of firm convictions in both political and religious matters, and fearless and manly in their expression. As a writer his style was marked by strength, dignity, and grace. 298. Clarence Cook (1828-1900) American author and art critic. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Cook graduated from Harvard in 1849 and worked as a teacher. Between 1863 and 1869, Cook wrote a series of articles about American art for The New York Tribune. In 1869, he moved to France and was the Parisian correspondent for The New York Tribune until the onset of the Franco-Prussian War. Cook was known for his expertise in archeology and antiquities and was instrumental in the criticism of the collection of General di Cesnola. In the mid-1850s Cook began to read works by John Ruskin and associated with a group of American artists, writers, and architects who followed Ruskin's thinking. Through this group he became aware of the British Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1863, with Clarence King and John William Hill he helped to found the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art, an American group, similar to the Pre-Raphaelites, who published a journal called The New Path. In 1869 Cook wrote A Description of the New York Central Park. In 1877, articles on home furnishings that Cook had written for Scribner's Monthly were published as a book entitled The House Beautiful. 306. Harold Giles Hoffman (1896-1954) was an American politician, a Republican who served as the 41st Governor of New Jersey, from 1935 to 1938. He also served two terms representing New Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, from 1927 to 1931. He is probably best known for being one of the most provably corrupt governors of that state. As governor, Hoffman secretly visited convicted Lindbergh kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann in his death row cell on the evening of October 16, 1935 with Anna Bading, a stenographer and fluent speaker of German. Hoffman urged the other members of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals , then the state's highest court, to visit Hauptmann. Despite Governor Hoffman's doubt regarding Hauptmann's guilt, Hoffman was unable to convince the other members of the court to re-examine the case, and Hauptmann was executed on April 3, 1936. He had a deep admiration for the great generals of Napoleon , and his uncompromising spirit and independent views marked him as a leader. Entering the army as sub-lieutenant, he took a secret but active part in the unsuccessful Belfort Conspiracy. At the outbreak of war with Spain in 1823, Carrel, whose sympathies were with the liberal cause, resigned, and succeeded in escaping to Barcelona. He enrolled in the foreign legion and fought gallantly against his former comrades. The legion was compelled to surrender near Figueres , and Carrel was taken prisoner by his former general, Damas. There was considerable difficulty about the terms of his capitulation, and one council of war condemned Carrel to death. The sentence was not carried out, and he was soon acquitted and freed. Hubert, director of magazine Le Monde Illustre. [7] Mlle Cécile Charlotte Furtado (1821-896) was chiefly known for her philanthropy in the areas of medicine, education, and religion. During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, she supported the Red Cross and the ambulance services; and in 1895 she bequeathed her villa in Nice as a hospital and sanatorium for wounded and convalescent soldiers. In 1884 she founded and endowed an orphanage in the 14th Arrondissement on the street which was renamed Rue Furtado-Heine in her honour after her death, as well as similar children’s establishments in Bayone and Montrouge. She was a generous donor to the Institut Pasteur, and her commemorative bust still adorns the halls of the Institute. Mme Furtado-Heine also generously contributed to numerous Jewish charities and benevolent organisations; and financially supported the building of new synagogues in France and Belgium. Her charitable and philanthropic endeavours were recognised by the Government of France, and in 1896 she became the Officer of the Legion d’Honneur, a distinction very rare for a woman in the nineteenth century. 320. Jasper Yeates (1745-1817) was a lawyer and judge from Pennsylvania. He was born in Philadelphia into a prominent family, and was sent to the Inns of Court in England for his legal training. He became a resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. During the American Revolution he sided with the Patriot cause. In 1776, he served as a commissioner to investigate Native American affairs in Pittsburgh. After the Revolution, Yeates was a delegate to the Pennsylvania convention that ratified the United States Constitution in 1787. He served as a justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1791 until his death in 1817. A Federalist, he was appointed by the Washington administration in 1794 to serve on a commission sent to negotiate an end to the Whiskey Rebellion. The Jasper Yeates House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Offered here is a small document dated 1782, written out by Yeates, signing his name in the text. Hoffman) (1896-1954) Republican who served as the 41st Governor of New
Jersey, from 1935 to 1938. He also served two terms representing New
Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of
Representatives, from 1927 to 1931. He is probably best known for being
one of the most corrupt Governors of that State. As governor, Hoffman
secretly visited convicted Lindbergh kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann in his
death row cell on the evening of October 16, 1935 with Anna Bading, a
stenographer and fluent speaker of German. Hoffman urged the other
members of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals , then the state's
highest court, to visit Hauptmann. Despite Governor Hoffman's doubt
regarding Hauptmann's guilt, Hoffman was unable to convince the other
members of the Court to re-examine the case, and Hauptmann was executed
on April 3, 1936. On March 18, 1954, Governor Robert B. Meyner uncovered
a significant embezzlement scheme perpetrated by Hoffman, and suspended
him from his position of Employment Security Division Director. Three
months later, in June 1954, Hoffman died in a New York City hotel room
of a heart attack. Just before dying, the disgraced former governor
wrote a confession and admitted that he had embezzled over $300,000 from

Fiedler's many Broadway appearances included the 1960 play A Raisin in the Sun, in which he was the only Caucasian in a virtually all-black cast. His first film role was as the supplicative Juror No. 2 in Twelve Angry Men (1957). Fiedler's stock in trade was the meek-looking soul who compensated for his demeanor with a nasty temper or sadistic streak. In this capacity, he was often seen as vindictive school principals, obstreperous civil servants or combative psychiatric patients (vide TV's The Bob Newhart Show). 358. [THEATRE] MABEL (Lucy Hackney) IRVING [1873-1914] British actress; married to Laurence Irving, the English dramatist and novelist, and son of Sir Henry Irving. Laurence and Mabel were on a tour of first Australia and then North America from 1912 to 1914. Their biggest success on the tour was Laurence's own play Typhoon which was a topical play set in the time of the Russo-Japanese War, with Laurence playing a Japanese officer. Laurence and Mabel Irving later drowned in the RMS Empress of Ireland disaster on May 29, 1914. Reports in the news accounts of the tragedy say that they got separated and Laurence was in a position of temporary safety, but he knew Mabel could not swim and he jumped back into the St. Lawrence River to rescue her. Louise Brooks, Alice White, and Eleanor Powell got their show business start as lavishly dressed (or underdressed) chorus girls strutting to the "Scandal Walk". Much of George Gershwin's early work appeared in the 1920-24 editions of Scandals.George White's Scandals is also the name of several movies set within the Scandals, all of which focus primarily on the show's acts, with a thin backstage plot stringing them all together. She was also the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the U.S. Presidency at a major party's convention (1964 Republican Convention, won by Barry Goldwater). Smith was an early opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy. On June 1, 1950, she gave her Declaration of Conscience speech on the floor of the Senate, earning McCarthy's permanent ire and the epithet "Moscow Maggie" from his staff. 374. Two Manuscript Documents Signed relating to an 18th century Bass family in Virginia. First is a receipt dated 12/10/1795 and reading "Received in full of Archad Bass and Thomas Bass his father from the beginning of the world to this day. It is signed by Isaac Micaels (by his mark), approx. 8x3 in. The second document gives an accounting (in pounds, shillings and pence), "being the balance which I am due Alexander Bass for the rent of his plantation." It is signed by Wm. 379. Sir George Rostrevor Hamilton (1888 - 1967) was an English poet and critic. He worked as a civil servant: his experience as an inspector of taxes meaning he could help out his friend Walter de la Mare. He was knighted in 1951. He had a classical education at the University of Oxford, and later compiled anthologies of Latin and Greek verse for Nonesuch Press. He was a published war poet of World War I, known for the rather conventional and sentimental A Cross in Flanders. His book The Tell-Tale Article on the Auden Group made an impact by the expedient of counting the proportion of definite articles in Auden 's verse, remarking that it was much higher than in older styles. In general he was a steady conservative in matters of literature. He was a director of the Poetry Book Society, and well connected as a correspondent of many literary figures; including E. R. 387. [SPACE] CLYDE TOMBAUGH (1906-1997) American Astronomer. He was the final discoverer of planet PLUTO after many years of research. When he was 22 he had a home-made 9 inch reflector that he used to makde drawings of Saturn and Jupiter from. After sending his pictures to Lowell Observatory for critique, he was immediately offered a position as astronomical photographer. Later, his research gained him another position as researcher, and his goal was to find the infamous Planet X, which would later be Pluto. Finally, on March 12, 1930, Pluto was discovered. Afterwards, he continued to discover a comet, five open clusters, globular cluster, and a supercluster of galaxes stretching from Andromeda to Perseus - ANS dtd 3/23/1994 regretting he has no photographs...........50-75
