1. [MIXED MULTIPLE LOT] includes: (1) Raphael Demos (1892-1968) Greek-American philosopher. He was Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity, emeritus, at Harvard University and an authority on the work of the Greek philosopher Plato. At Harvard, he taught Martin Luther King Jr. CLIP SIGNATURE mounted to page beside picture. (2) US Senate printed gov. document re: Pacific Railroad, dated 1870, 7 pp. (3) Thomas J. Whelan (1922-2002) American politician who served as the mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey, from 1963 to 1971. Whelan flew 63 missions in World War II as a pilot in the Army Air Force. Whelan was indicted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey as a member of the "Hudson County Eight," and was convicted in federal court of conspiracy and extortion in a multimillion-dollar political kickback scheme connected to city and county contracts. Whelan served seven years of a 15-year sentence in the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Signed 3x5 mounted card. (4) Joseph C. O'Mahoney (1884-1962) US senator from Wyoming. Signed 1937 United States Senate Chamber Admit card [mounted]. (5) Bruno Carlyle - ink signed 6 page typed manuscript titled THE CHRISTIAN PARASITE UPON SOCIAL PROGRESS. (6) Frank B. Linderman (1869-1938) was a Montana writer, politician, Native American ally and ethnographer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he went West as a young man and became enamored of life on the Montana frontier. Lengthy 1919 2 page letter signed in type, to Carley, which we assume was Bruno Carlyle [see above]. (7) Syed Amjad Ali (1907-1997) Pakistani politician and a civil servant during the British Raj era, who served as the 3rd Minister of Finance (Pakistan) from 1956 to 1958 and as Pakistan Ambassador to the United States from 1953 to 1955. (3) Scott O'Dell (1898-1989) American author. Signed picture, 8.5 x 11. VG. (4) JOHNNY MILLER (b.1947) American former professional golfer. He was one of the top players in the world during the mid-1970s. He was the first to shoot 63 in a major championship to win the 1973 U.S. Open. Signed napkin, 5x5 in. VG. (5) Charles B. Rounds - Noted Maine Judge. Served in the Civil War and was a noted attorney and judge in Calais, Maine. He was a first lieutenant in Company D, 32nd Maine infantry. He Mustered April 19, 1864, and was wounded May 12th at Spottysyvania. Rounds was at Elmira, New York guarding prisoners’ of war, having been assigned by special order no. 164 July 20, 1864. Signed Check dated 1890. VG. (6) Walter Cecil Macfarren (1826-1905) English pianist, composer and conductor, and a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music. Signature [mounted]. (7) Emma Speed Sampson author who wrote the last 5 books from The Bluebird Books series of novels popular with teenage girls in the 1910s and 1920s. Signature, inscribed [pencil] 1923. (8) Samuel Sullivan "Sunset" Cox (1824-1889) American Congressman and diplomat. He represented both Ohio and New York in the United States House of Representatives, and also served as United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. [VERMONT] Lewis Richard Morris (1760-1825) United States Representative from Vermont and a nephew of Gouverneur Morris and Lewis Morris. Born in Scarsdale, New York, he attended the common schools. He moved to Springfield, Vermont, and from 1781 to 1783 was secretary of foreign affairs. He was a member of the Springfield meeting-house committee in 1785, was tax collector in 1786 and 1787, Windsor County court clerk from 1789 to 1796 and was judge of the same court until 1801. He was clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1790 and 1791, and was a member of the convention to ratify the United States Constitution . He was secretary of the constitutional convention in Windsor in 1793. He attended the Vermont ratifying convention in Bennington, where he voted in support of the Constitution. Morris was a brigadier general in the State militia in 1793 and major general of the First Division from 1795 to 1817. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1795 to 1797 and 1803 to 1808, and served as speaker. He was elected as a Federalist to the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Congresses, holding office from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1803. His abstention from voting assured Thomas Jefferson's election as President over Aaron Burr in the House of Representatives in February, 1801. 4. [World War 2] Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Captain Louis W. McKeehan, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while attached to the Research and Development Section, Bureau of Ordnance, from the outbreak of hostilities in 1941 to March 1944. 5. [VERMONT] Edward John Phelps (1822-1900) was a lawyer and diplomat from Vermont. He is notable for his service as Envoy to Court of St. James's from 1885 to 1889. In addition, Phelps was a founder of the American Bar Association, and served as its president from 1880 to 1881. President Grover Cleveland intended to appoint him as U.S. Chief Justice in 1888, but Phelps was concerned that his tenure as ambassador to the Court of St. James's in Great Britain would cause the Democratic Party to lose the support of Irish Americans, and he declined. Offered here is a 1859 Vermont Supreme Court pre-printed document, 2pp, approx. 8-/8 x 12-3/4 in. The handwriting [includes Phelps] on verso was written by Phelps. VG..............75-100

6. [EARLY AUTOMOBILES] Dan (Daniel Alden Reed 1875-1959) American football player, coach, and U.S. Representative from the state of New York. Reed was attorney for the excise department of New York from 1903 to 1909. He served in the House of Representatives as a Republican from 1919 until his death in Washington, D.C., on February 19, 1959. After playing football at Cornell University, Reed coached at the University of Cincinnati, Pennsylvania State University, and his alma mater Cornell. Offered here is a TLS signed Dan, Pontiac, Michigan, May 30, 1915, 2 pages, 4to. With original envelope. To his wife and children. This is a definitive letter describing an eyewitness account of the production line which created Ford automobiles. This letter was written the year after Ford instituted profit sharing. Reed describes the machine shop and the assembling room. He goes into great detail about the assembling of Ford automobiles. ............"I timed the operation and found that an automobile, or rather a Ford, left the end of the belt every twenty seconds...." 7. [BOBBY FISCHER] Robert James Fischer (1943- 2008) was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Offered here are 2 items once owned by Fischer. We bought his chess magazines at the Fischer Auction held in NY at Swann's Auction. Back around 1968 Fischer arranged thru a book dealer to sell his personal library because he needed money. The Brooklyn Library purchased in library. Years later Swann's sold many items from the libraries collection. Offered here are 2 items: (1) A 1968 softcover brooklet titled FROM THEORY TO ACTION, 64pp. 8-1/2 x 10-3/4 in. (2) A 1961 page from a chess publication. Fischer subscribed to CHESS ARCHIVES EDITIONED BY DR. MAX EUWE. They would mail to Fischer on some regular schedule multiple page of chess games. These would then be assembled in a notebook. 209. [WALT KUHN ESTATE] Aunt Margaret writes to Walt Kuhn 1920 from Jamaica, NY, 1p. saying that Walt's father says he thinks he would be better off staying in a hospital. She says that Walt should make the decision. Includes original envelope addressed to Mr. Walter Kuhn, Canoe Place, Good Ground, L.I. Walt Kuhn has written in pencil on the envelope. 10. Margaret Bancroft (1854-1912) she was a pioneer in special education. At the age of 29, she opened the first private boarding school in New Jersey for children with disabilities. Originally opened as The Haddonfield School for the Mentally Deficient and Peculiarly Backward in 1883, it was renamed the Bancroft Training School in 1904. AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE clipped from letter. 11. [PSYCHICAL] Traugott Konstantin Oesterreich (1880-1949) German religious psychologist and philosopher.
Oesterreich was also interested in parapsychology. He argued against the philosophy of materialism. He was the author of Die Besessenheit (1921), a book on demonic possession. It was translated into English in 1966. William Peter Blatty, author of The Exorcist, was influenced by the book. TLS, 1923, signed on verso. To American Society for Psychical Research Inc. 13. Pauline Erskine (1878-1945) wife of John Erskine the American educator, author, pianist and composer. Pauline and John were the grand-parents of actress Lindsay Crouse. 14. Major Reginald Owens (1884-1928) British Army officer who married Ruth Baird Bryan in 1910. She was elected to two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was the first woman appointed as a United States ambassador. She was a Democrat, who in 1929 was elected from Florida's 4th district as Florida's first female U.S. Representative. In 1933, she became the first woman to be appointed as a U.S. ambassador, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt selected her as Ambassador to Denmark and Iceland. Offered here is a 1929 bank check signed by Douglas Volk to Maj. Reginald Owen who has endorsed on the verso. Volk, of course, was a well-known American artist. VG...............50-75
15. [THEATRE] Katharine Cornell (1893-1974) American stage actress, writer, theater owner and producer. Dubbed "The First Lady of the Theatre" by critic Alexander Woollcott, Cornell was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award, for Romeo and Juliet in 1935. Cornell is noted for her major Broadway roles in serious dramas, often directed by her husband, Guthrie McClintic. The couple formed C. & M.C. Productions, Inc., a company that gave them complete artistic freedom in choosing and producing plays. Offered here are 3 items from her estate: (1) Her EXXON credit card made out to her married name K.C. MCCLINTIC. (2) Unsigned 1973 original color photo 3.5 x 5 in. 19. [MUSIC] Johanna Emilia Agnes Gadski (1872-1932) German soprano. She was blessed with a secure, powerful, ringing voice, fine musicianship and an excellent technique. These attributes enabled her to enjoy a highly successful career in New York City and London, performing heavy dramatic roles in the German and Italian repertoires. Large bold signature dated 1916 on 5 x 6.5 in. paper. Fine............25-3520. [FILM] Robert "Bobby" Banas (b. 1933) is an American dancer and actor. He is known for his work on movies such as West Side Story (1961), Always (1989) and Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), as well as a viral video of a televised performance of the Nitty Gritty dance, which accumulated 3.6 million views in four years. Natalie Wood was his dancing partner in the Michael Panaieff Children’s’ Ballet Company, to which he received a scholarship and in which Jill St. John and Stefanie Powers were members. Banas also attended the Hollywood Professional School. He auditioned for the production of Carousel at the LA Civic Light Opera and was cast as Enoch Snow Jr. After that, he appeared in stage productions of Kiss Me Kate, Annie Get Your Gun, Brigadoon, Plain and Fancy, and Peter Pan. 26. [SCIENCE] Louis Agricola Bauer (1865-1932) American geophysicist, astronomer and magnetician. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1888, and he immediately started work for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. During 1895-1896, he was instructor in mathematical physics at the University of Chicago, after which he worked in various positions at different locations. The most important of these was as the first director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, which was established in 1904. In this position, he set up and carried out a large-scale program of two and a half decades to map the Earth's magnetic field on land and at sea in an attempt to provide accurate, up-to-date information about this important feature. Offered here is a 1896 bank check made out to Bauer and endorsed on the serso by him. The check is signed by R.S. Woodward. Robert Simpson Woodward (1849- 924) was an American civil engineer, physicist and mathematician. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1896. In 1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical Society, and in 1900 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 27. Sam Bartlett (1752-1821) American patriot, and a noted silversmith from Concord, Mass. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Bible Society, a member of the Cambridge Humane Society, and also from 1795-1820 the elected Register of Deeds for Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Deafened by cannon fire during the Boston massacre, he gave up his acedemic studies and became a smith. He worked from circa 1775 to 1795 as a silversmith in Concord Mass.. Although he worked in the town for two decades, Bartlett's most active period in Concord seems to have been between 1785 and 1795. With the aid of journeyman silversmith Joseph Lasinby Brown, of Concord, Bartlett executed communion silver commissions for three towns in Middlesex County, and produced domestic silver for resale and wholesale markets. At the end of the period, he was elected register of deeds for Middlesex County and moved to Cambridge, retiring from the role of silversmith. Bartlett marked 12 pieces of communion silver, including three flagons, one tankard and eight cups. About 25 pieces of Bartlett's domestic hollowware are known, including canns, porringers, creampots, and a unique miniature teapot. In addition, Bartlett marked teaspoons, tablespoons, ladles, and shoe buckles. Offered here is a 1816 Charlestown, Mass. deed, estate of John Trumbull of Newton. 33. [FILM] Fay Bainter (1893-1968) American film and stage actress. Bainter quickly achieved success, and in 1938 she became the first performer nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Actress, for White Banners (1937), and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Jezebel (1938), winning for the latter. Since then, only nine other actors have won dual nominations in a single year. She was again nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Children's Hour (1961). ALS, no date, 1p. 34. [CLOWNS] Duane "Uncle Soapy" Thorpe [1925-1995] American clown inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame in 2000. Wonderful 4 pages ALS, written in 1994 from Spain. Written to friends back in Florida he talks about the famous clow, Lou Jacobs, and his fear of ending up in a nursing home. He served with great distinction at the Battle of Talavera, where he was severely wounded in trying to rally the Spanish runaways, and was only saved from becoming a prisoner by the gallantry of his lifelong friend, Major (afterwards Lieutenant-general Sir) S. F. Whittingham. In that year, 1809, he became Viscount Macduff on his father's accession to the Irish earldom of Fife, but he still continued to serve in Spain, and was present during the defence of Cadiz against Marshal Victor, and was again severely wounded in the attack on Fort Matagorda in 1810. On 17 April 1811 he succeeded his father as fourth Earl Fife, and as Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, and returned to Britain, after being made for his services a knight of the order of St. Ferdinand. 42. [AMERICAN NAVAL] Commander John Mitchell Hawley - a native of Northampton, Mass., a descendant of one of the oldest and most prominent families of the town. He made his home here until he was appointed to the Naval Academy, from which he was graduated in 1868. In 1869 he was made an ensign, in 1870 a master, and in 1874 a lieutenant, and from the time of his graduation until 1887 he rendered valuable service in several coast survey expeditions and in the hydrographic office. From 1887 to 1890 he was executive officer of the Nipsic, one of the United States fleet sent to Apia, Samoan islands, during the uprisings in 1889. The American, British and German fleets in the bay were overwhelmed by a fearful hurricane which swept the islands in March, 1889, and the Nipsic was one of the two or three vessels that escaped total destruction. Commander Hawley received a vote of thanks from the Legislature of Massachusetts for rare courage and ability displayed during the hurricane, and was commended to the Navy Department by Rear Admiral Kimberley, '"for zeal and energy in getting the Nipsic afloat after -she was beached. He had entire charge of this work, and to his efforts, in a large measure, is due the fact that the Nipsic is now afloat without more serious injury." In 1894 he was promoted to be lieutenant-commander and in 1896 was ordered to duty as assistant to the chief of the Bureau of Navigation, having charge of enlisted men. During the Spanish-American war, he was engaged in recruiting men from the west for the navy, having charge of three parties who secured nearly two thousand men for the service. He was promoted to commander March 3, 1899, and in May was ordered to the command of the Hartford, Admiral Farragut's old flagship, which is to be used as a practice-ship. 43. [NAVAL] N.H. Farquhar (Rear Admiral Norman Von H. Farquhar, USN, (1840-1907). Letter Signed, marked "Copy", USS Trenton, Apia, Samoa, April 22, 1889, 2 pages, 7-3/4 x 10". The original was sent to the Secretary of the Navy, Washington DC [Benjamin F. Tracy]. This "copy" letter was sent to Henry Lyon, who became commander of the Nipsic. Dated about a month after this famous naval incident (The Samoan Crisis ). This letter is of high praise for Lieut. Commander Henry W. Lyon, saving the Nipsic "...to his excellent service during the Hurricane of March 16th and 17th, 1889, and since then in saving valuable property from the wreck. During the gale, he intelligently carried out my orders; personally supervising the many plans to keep out water, getting lines to the Vaudalia to prevent the total destruction of the Trenton and many other duties besides..." Norman Von Heidreich Farquhar (1840-1907) was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, attended the U.S. Naval Academy during 1854-59. After graduation, he served with the Africa Squadron until September 1861. Lieutenant Farquhar spent most of the Civil War off the U.S. Atlantic coast and in the West Indies, serving in the gunboats Mystic, Sonoma and Mahaska and the cruisers Rhode Island and Santiago de Cuba. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in mid-1865, a few months after the fighting ended, and was on duty at the U.S. Naval Academy from then until September 1868. For the rest of the 1860s and into the next decade, Farquhar served in the warship Swatara, was Executive Officer of USS Severn and USS Powhatan and Commanding Officer of USS Kansas. He also had two tours at the Boston Navy Yard on ordnance duty and as Executive Officer. Advanced in rank to Commander in December 1872, Farquhar spent nearly five years at the Naval Academy. He commanded the training ship Portsmouth in 1877-78, and the steam sloops Quinnebaug and Wyoming in European waters in 1878-1881. Five more years of Naval Academy duty were followed by torpedo instruction at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1886. From May 1887 until her loss in the March 1889 Samoan hurricane, Captain Farquhar commanded the steam frigate Trenton. He then served on several of the Navy's boards and, in March 1890 became the Chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks. During 1894-97, he was Commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Commanding Officer of the cruiser Newark, and President of the Naval Examining Board. While holding the ranks of Commodore and Rear Admiral, Farquhar was Commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1897-99, commanded the North Atlantic Station during 1899-1901 and was Chairman of the Lighthouse Board in 1901-02. He retired from active duty in April 1902, upon reaching the statutory service age limit of 62. Rear Admiral Farquhar died at Jamestown, Rhode Island, on 3 July 1907. The letter is in very fine condition. Provenance: Estate of Admiral Henry W. Lyon, who had a distinguished Naval career, was honored for his service in the Spanish-American war where he commanded the U. S. S. Dolphin. 44. E.E. Cummings (1894-1962), often styled as e e cummings, as he sometimes signed his name, was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. He wrote approximately 2900 poems, two autobiographical novels, four plays, and several essays. In 1934, after his separation from his second wife, Cummings met Marion Morehouse, a fashion model and photographer. Although it is not clear whether the two were ever formally married, Morehouse lived with Cummings in a common-law marriage until his death in 1962. She died on May 18, 1969, while living at 4 Patchin Place, Greenwich Village, New York City, where Cummings had resided since September 1924. 48. [VERMONT] Benj. Swan (1762-1839) was an American merchant, banker and politician. He was an important political figure in Vermont and served as State Treasurer.A Federalist, Swan served in local offices including Postmaster. He served as Justice of the Peace when holders of that office still heard court cases. He was also active in the militia, and achieved the rank of Major.In 1796 Swan was appointed County Clerk, an office in which he served until his death. Swan was elected Vermont State Treasurer in 1800. He served until 1833, and is the state's longest-tenured Treasurer. This is an original document, dated Woodstock, 1811, a double sided writ for non-payment of debts....signed twice on the front by Benjamin Swan and once on the back side. Document is 9-3/4 x 15 in. 52. [SCIENCE] Charles Frederick Marvin (1858-1943) American meteorologist. He was born at Putnam, Ohio. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1883, and was appointed to the United States Army Signal Corps of the United States Army. On July 1, 1891, an Act of Congress created the Weather Bureau from the signal service. All the men and duties relating to weather were transferred from the War Department. He became professor of meteorology in 1903 in the Weather Bureau, and chief there in 1913. Marvin conducted important experiments for determining the amount of moisture in the air, invented instruments for automatically measuring and recording rainfall, snowfall, etc., and produced other advancements during the time when man first began the employment of powered aircraft. Marvin wrote numerous pamphlets and papers published by the Weather Bureau. He contributed to the New International Encyclopedia. [WORLD WAR 11] Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Through Lawford, who was married to Patricia Kennedy, a sister of John F. Kennedy's, Mr. Ebbins became a favorite of JFK's and a frequent guest at the White House and on Air Force One. 60. [FRANCE] 1774 autograph letter signed by the Chaplain for Louis XVI, the last king of France before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. When his father died of tuberculosis on 20 December 1765, the eleven-year-old Louis-Auguste became the new Dauphin. His mother never recovered from the loss of her husband and died on 13 March 1767, also from tuberculosis. The strict and conservative education he received from the Duc de La Vauguyon, "gouverneur des Enfants de France" (governor of the Children of France), from 1760 until his marriage in 1770, did not prepare him for the throne that he was to inherit in 1774 after the death of his grandfather, Louis XV. Throughout his education, Louis-Auguste received a mixture of studies particular to religion, morality, and humanities. His instructors may have also had a good hand in shaping Louis-Auguste into the indecisive king that he became. Abbé Berthier, his instructor, taught him that timidity was a value in strong monarchs, and Abbé Soldini, his confessor, instructed him not to let people read his mind. 68. [ART] Leonard Wells Volk (November 7, 1828 – August 19, 1895) was an American sculptor. He is notable for making one of only two life masks of United States President Abraham Lincoln. On August 22, 1864, he was advanced to the position of Surgeon General, with the grade of Brigadier General and on March 13, 1865, he received the brevet of major general for faithful and meritorious service during the war. On April 14, 1865, at the time of the assassination of United States President Lincoln and the attempted assassination of Secretary of State William H. Seward, Barnes attended the death bed of Lincoln and ministered to the successful restoration of Seward.
70. [DOE FAMILY] 1848 letter from Joseph Bodwell Doe (1818-1890) to his brother Charles Cogswell Doe (1830-1896) who would later become Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. This letter was sent while Joseph was ion Saratoga Springs, NY. Mainly talking about family and a possible visit from Charles. 1-1/2 pp., 7-1/2 x 9-3/4 in. Jos. B. Doe was born in New Hampshire, he was first a merchant, but when business failed, traveled west. He married Anna Marcher in 1840 and settle in Janesville in 1842, where he opened a general store. For a time he was editor of the Janesville Daily Recorder newspaper. He also loaned people money. In 1853 he entered a partnership with William Morrison Tallman known as the Central Bank of Wisconsin. This eventually became the First National Bank of Janesville. Doe served as the second mayor of Janesville. Along with several other businessmen, he helped establish the early Janesville Academy. Charles C. Doe was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of New Hampshire from 1859 to 1874, and then, after a brief period when the court was dissolved to be reorganized as the New Hampshire Supreme Court, as Chief Justice from 1876 to 1896. Roscoe Pound called Doe one of the ten greatest jurists in American history, the "one judge upon the bench of a state court who stands out as a builder of the law since the Civil War." The morning after Abraham Lincoln's death, three Army Medical Museum pathologists entered the White House to perform an autopsy on Lincoln's body. Overseen by Barnes, the autopsy was conducted by Colonel Joseph Woodward and Major Edward Curtis. The autopsy began at 11 a.m. on April 15, 1865. In 1881, during the long struggle of President James A. Garfield to live after being shot, Barnes was one of the surgeons who for weeks served in the chamber of the dying president. 73. [PIONEER KENTUCKY] Col. Joseph Barnett (1730 or 31 - 1795) an early pioneer in Kentucky who built Barnett's Station, one of the earliest forts erected near Severns Valley, Kentucky. He was also one of the founders and preacher of Regular Baptist Church of Severns Valley [Elizabethtown, KY], the oldest Baptist church in Kentucky. Barnett's Station was established by brothers Joseph and Alexander Barnett who came from Virginia to Kentucky in early 1780s. Settlement was frequently raided by Indians. During an attack in April 1790, two children were killed and Hanna Barnett, the ten-year-old daughter of Joseph, was carried off and held captive for six months. He was also one of the first judges in Elizabethtown. He, with his brother Robert, was at Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. His brother Robert was killed there. When the Revolutionary War came on some twenty years later he entered the northern wing of the army. He was in the Battle of Yorktown (October, 1781) and there met up with his brother Alexander. After some discussion they made arrangements to come to Kentucky. The following year they met at the fort where Elizabethtown now stands. To quote from Haycraft’s History "Honorable Judge Joseph Barnett . . . lived near Hartford, and traveled upwards of seventy‑five miles to sit in court. He did indeed possess a large landed estate ‑-27,934 acres at the time of his death. He was a dealer in lands on a large scale, Jefferson County (then Virginia) entries alone totaling 155,370 acres, and the early records of Nelson and Hardin Counties are full of land transactions to which he was a party. 75. [ART] Wendell D. Volk (1884-1953) American artist. Signed 1943 bank check. Born El Paso, TX, buried Arlington Natinal Cemetery. He was a printmaker and woodcarver, married Jessie J. McCoig, also an artist (1904-2005). The Douglas Volk family built a rustic Tudor cottage, “Hewnoaks,” on the shores of Kezar Lake in Center Lovell, Maine. [Stephen A.] Douglas Volk was the son of Leonard [W.] Volk, who was famous for his many life casts of Abraham Lincoln. S.A. Douglas Volk studied in Paris and Italy. He taught at the Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design in New York and was a founder of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art. He participated in the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and taught at the New York Society for Ethical Culture established by Felix Adler, where he met Karl von Rydingsvärd. He married Marion Larabee in 1881 and two of their children were dau. Marion and son Wendell. Daughter Marion helped Mother Marion run the Sabatos Studio, which produced woven and printed textiles. Wendell was also a weaver and learned woodcarving from Karl von Rydingsvärd. Wendell’s wife Jessie left Hewnoaks, lock, stock, and barrel, to the University of Maine. Hewnoaks was the heart of an Arts and Crafts community. Marion Volk decided to improve upon a generations-old native tradition of making “drawn” rugs and with the help of her son Wendell and daughter Marion she began Sabatos Handcrafts in 1901. The Volks gathered together residents of Center Lovell, who then carried out every part of the rug-making process. Twenty years later the Volks began producing block-printed textiles. The rugs and printed panels are extremely rare today. VG.....................50-75

77. [AMERICANA] 1793 manuscript document from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. John Manning (1753-October 6, 1793) promises to pay Robert O. Treadwell 1,795 pounds. Witness was Isaac Ringe who was quite prominent; aided in establishing the northeast boundary, and during Governor Wentworth's operations erected a house here. As he was a loyalist, the Provincial Congress directed him, November 15, 1775, to remove himself to some place at least fifteen miles from Portsmouth, there to remain until he was granted leave to go abroad. This restriction was removed January 3, 1776. Wolfeborough was doubtless the place of his exile, as he evidently lived here before and after Governor Wentworth left the town. Approx. 7 x 3.5 in. 83. [COLONIAL TIMES] John Keyes (1674-1768) John Keyes, youngest son of Solomon and Frances, was born in Chelmsford, Mass. We first hear of him in Marlboro, Mass., where is recorded the birth of his children. He probably moved to Shrewsbury about 1720, and was one of the founders of the church there. He married March 11, 1696, Mary, daughter of Gersham and Hannah (Johnson) Eames. Gersham Eames died in Watertown, Mass., Nov. 25, 1676, and Mary was born four months after her father's death. Her mother subsequently married a Ward, and became the m128yes, in Shrewsbury. On the night of the 7th, the house being nearly finished, was burned, as also the old one near it in which Major John was then residing. Six persons were sleeping in the new house. Three sons of Capt. Keyes, and two of Bragg's apprentices were burned, and Bragg saved himself by jumping from the window. John, usually known as the famous Major John Keyes, lived with his wife 72 years. Their son-in-law, Daniel Rand, married Martha Bruce for his 2nd wife, was married by Major John who had then passed his 95th year, and afterward lived with his father-in-law. His farm was subsequently known as the Rand farm, and was purchased by Col. Joseph Henshaw of Rand or his heirs. Maj. John died March 31, 1768. Mary, relict of Maj. American Physicist Louis W. McKeehan85. [SCIENCE - WAR] The following are from the papers of the American physicist Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Offered here are several pieces. 87. Paul H. Douglas (1892-1976) U.S. Senator from Illinois for eighteen years, from 1949 to 1967. During his Senate career, he was a prominent member of the liberal coalition.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and becoming known as a war hero. Shortly after losing the primary, Douglas resigned from the Chicago City Council and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a private at the age of 50, one of the oldest men in Marine Corps history to do so. Offered here is a TLS, 1950, 1p. to congressman Philip J. Philbin [Mass. Rep]. He encloses a letter from a women in Webster, Mass. She is having a problem with her town. One is also inscribed. VG................40-6091. [ENGLAND] Benjamin Boothroyd (1768 – 1836) English Independent minister and Hebrew scholar. Born at Warley Town, in the parish of Halifax, Yorkshire, Booth was the son of a shoemaker there. He was sent to the village school, leaving it when six years old. He helped his father to make shoes for a time, but when about 14 years old he ran away. In Lancashire he found work with a Methodist; and later returned to Warley to superintend his father's trade. In 1790 he was chosen minister at Pontefract. Ordained there, he succeeded in filling his chapel and a new one was built. He also opened a shop as a bookseller and printer. It was he who commissioned the making of the University's legendary Glass Flowers collection. ALS written in the 3rd person, sent to Professor Robert Simpson Woodward (1849-1924) American civil engineer, physicist and mathematician. n 1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical Society, and in 1900 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 93. [AIR FORCE] Edward Air Force Base cover, postmarked Mar. 4, 1976. Signed by the test pilots Geo. Larson and C.C. Bock Jr. This cover was carried on that test flight 3 March 76. This test flight was for the initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1 bomber. George W. Larson (1940-2008) US Air Force pliot. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1962. He retired in 1992 as a U.S. Air Force Major General. From August 1972 to July 1978 he served with Strategic Air Command’s 4200th Test and Evaluation Squadron representing Strategic Air Command (known as SAC) in initial operational flight test and evaluation of the B-1. He eventually amassed more than 5,000 flying hours in 38 different Air Force aircraft. Charles C. Bock Jr. (1940-2008) Col. Bock had a long and distinguished United States Air Force career as a bomber pilot, fighter pilot, test pilot, and a military astronaut designee. Col. Bock flew 51 combat missions with the 90th Bomb Squadron in Korea and 52 combat missions with the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing in Vietnam. THIS B-1 Flight cover was carried on this flight. RARE!..............300-400..........Min. Bid $10094. Sam Bartlett (1752-1821) American patriot, and a noted silversmith from Concord, Mass. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Bible Society, a member of the Cambridge Humane Society, and also from 1795-1820 the elected Register of Deeds for Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Deafened by cannon fire during the Boston massacre, he gave up his acedemic studies and became a smith. He worked from circa 1775 to 1795 as a silversmith in Concord Mass.. Although he worked in the town for two decades, Bartlett's most active period in Concord seems to have been between 1785 and 1795. With the aid of journeyman silversmith Joseph Lasinby Brown, of Concord, Bartlett executed communion silver commissions for three towns in Middlesex County, and produced domestic silver for resale and wholesale markets. At the end of the period, he was elected register of deeds for Middlesex County and moved to Cambridge, retiring from the role of silversmith. Bartlett marked 12 pieces of communion silver, including three flagons, one tankard and eight cups. About 25 pieces of Bartlett's domestic hollowware are known, including canns, porringers, creampots, and a unique miniature teapot. In addition, Bartlett marked teaspoons, tablespoons, ladles, and shoe buckles. Offered here is a 1820 Charlestown, Mass. document concerning Henry Van Voorhees of Charlestown Morocco manufacturer. 94. Payson Williston (1764-1856) First Minister at Easthampton, Ma. . Payson was born in West Haven CT. and was the son of Rev. Noah Williston and Hannah Payson. He entered the ministery under the teachings of Dr. Trumball of New Haven CT. and attend Yale College from 1779 through 1783. Before he entered college he spent a short spell in a Militia fighting in the Revolutionary war. Payson was licensed to preach at twenty one years of age, but did not settle into his final role of Pastor of Easthampton until he was twenty six. He became the first Pastor of Easthampton on Aug 13 , 1789, when he was ordained with his father present. He spent forty years as Pastor of Easthampton. In 1790 he married Sarah Birdseye, daughter of Rev. Nathan Birdseye of Stratford CT. Together they had five children; Maria, John Payson, Samuel, Nathan Birdseye and Sarah. In 1805 he traveled to the settlements in New York to teach his ministries and in 1833 at the age of seventy requested to be relieved of his duties as Pastor of Easthampton, which he was granted. Payson past on at the age of ninety two, on January 30th, 1856. Payson Williston, was the minister in Easthampton’s only church. Payson was a stern, old-fashioned New England preacher, with strong Calvinist leanings. Offered here is a 1846, 3pp, folded stampless letter from Payson Williston to his son Nathan B. Williston at Brattleboro, Vermont. Newsy letter about family - internesting to note about how Pneumonia was treated in one instance. Three pages plus postmarked afddress leaf. 95. [COMEDY] Allen & Rossi was a comedy team composed of Marty Allen and Steve Rossi, active from 1957 until 1969. They appeared on over 700 television shows including 44 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, including three of the four Ed Sullivan episodes on which The Beatles appeared. 98. [WORLD WAR 2] Dr. Ralph D. Bennett (1900-1994) His career was varied and most distinguished. He served as a professor of physics at M. I.T; as a naval officer, responsible for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington; and director of the Vallecitos Atomic Laboratory near Livermore, Calif., for the General Electric Co. He subsequently became V.P. and director of research for Martin Marietta. Dr. Bennett was a man uniquely placed to bring about significant changes in the way the Navy handled its research and development in those early years. Having both a Captain's rank and a respected technical background, he played a major role in the development of the Military-civilian partnership at NOL, and saw its use accepted universally in the rest of the Navy's R&D management. The Navywide system of Commander/Technical Director management owes its origins to Dr. Bennett. Offered here is an ink signed memorandum from Bennett to Capt. L.W. Mckeehan, Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Navy Yard, Washington DC, 8 December 1943, 2pp. Discusses, by names, using certain people. Louis Mckeehan has written and signed a response on page 2. 99. [KENTUCY PIONEER] 1807 Hardin County [Kentucky] document signed by Samuel Givens. Robert Bleakley and William Montgomery appeared before Justice of the Peace Samuel Givens concerning a debt owned to them by Hensby Reed. Signed on the verso by Saml. Perrcifull. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. Partly separated at middle fold otherwise in very good + condition. Not signed by Bleakley or Montgomery. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY was born near Aucknaclay, Ireland in 1776 and fled to America. arriving in Hardin County, Kentucky about 1801. With another Irishman, Robert Bleakley, opened a store in Elizabethtown. Their establishment is said to have been the first such operation in the pioneer village that could ready be called a "store." Montgomery was an Orangeman, who was engaged in the rebellion In Ireland in 1798. He was arrested and confined in a prison from which men were taken and executed daily He was released from prison through the efforts of his aunt, who was married to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on the condition that he would emigrate to America. Wm. Montgomery and Bleakley opened a dry goods store. In 1806 they hired the father of Abraham Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat down the Mississippi river with their merchan°dise to be sold in New Orleans. They paid Tom Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit of 13 pounds in gold. Their store account books show Tom Lincoln buying “two twists of tobacco & one pint of whisky.” And the books also show that in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying spree, purchasing silk, linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons, etc. Earlier that year he had purchased an aristocratic beaver hat & a pair of silk suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this time, courting his future bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln’s mother]. After the wedding he made his home in a cabin close to the courthouse in Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their store, knives, forks, spoons, thread, needles, silk & tobacco.................Min. Bid $100

101. Theodatus Garlick (1805-1884) American surgeon and sculptor. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Garlick was one of the world's first plastic surgeons. Along with colleague H.A. Ackley, he was known for successfully artificially propagating trout and other fish. He was also a talented fine art sculptor. It has been suggested that Garlick made the first daguerreotype photograph taken in the United States, and later the first daguerreotype taken in the shade. Rare ALS, Cleveland, 1867, to E.A. Brown. Some sort of financial matter. One page, 7.5 x 9.5 in. Envelope is included. This is another item just recently discovered amongst of holdings after many years. VG..................200-300100. Brief bio. on some of these signers:
Charles Helm (1777-1831) served in the Kentucky House in 1806, 1809-1811 and the Kentucky Senate from 1812-1816. He was also a veteran of the War of 1812.
Samuel Bush (1772-1812) became the Uncle of Abe Lincoln.
John Vertrees (1741-1803) he was a Captain solider in the Revolutionary War, one of 175 Virginia voluntees called by the Indians “Long Knives”, with George Rogers Clark in the conquest of the Northwest Territory (1778-9), fighting at Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Vincennes, Chilloocpthe and Pickaway; and was a captain of a company of soldiers with Col. John Floyd against Indians in 1782, following their incursions into Hardin and other counties in 1781.
Stephen Rawlings (1749-1830) Private Stephen Rawlings, served in the American Revolution from 18 July until 21 August of 1780. He was in a Militia under the command of Col William Linn, in Captain John Swan's Company. At this time, George Rogers Clark was the Commanding General. Stephen was on the payroll of the Jefferson Militia under actual service in repelling an invasion of the enemy Indians, the expedition against the enemy, under General George Rogers Clark, from the 21st of October 1782 until the 6th of November 1782.
James Crutcher (1755-1823) served as a corporal in Company 8, 2nd Virginia Regiment from June 1, 1777, to January 1778. He fought in the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown and wintered at Valley Forge in 1777-78 in his 2nd Virgina Regiment service.
BEN HELM (1767-1858) known as "Kitchen Knife Whetted on a Brick." He was a surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts; major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was a partner, in the general store business, with Duff Green [later statesman] in the early frontier days of Kentucky. It is likely that young Abe Lincoln visited his store often in his early youth.*******************************

Rare Pioneer Kentucky Document103. [KENTUCKY] Very rare 1811 pioneer manuscript document from the Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky area signed by several interesting men. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-1/2 in. Signed by the following on the front side: Wm. Withers, Ben Helm, James Crutcher, Christopher Bush, Samuel Stevenson, Adam Miller. Also signed on the verso by Christopher Miller and Daniel Waide. See some biographical information on these pioneers below.William Withers (1747-1821) born in Virginia he was a Revolutionary War veteran, having served as a Second Lieutenant in the Fauquier County Militia in the Company of Capt. Bronaugh. He came to Kentucky in 1793.

MAJOR JAS. CRUTCHER - Pioneer. Came to Kentucky from Virginia with his father & family, arriving at the Falls of the Ohio in early 1780s, and later moved to Bardstown. In 1796, he moved to Elizabethtown and became one of the earliest merchants there. Served terms in the legislature and came close to being elected lieutenant governor. He was at the battle of New Orleans as aide to General Thomas, commander of the Kentucky troops. He was involved in the flatboat business and it was said that after delivering a cargo by flatboat to New Orleans, Crutcher would walk back to Kentucky. On these trips he carried his money in a close fitting deer skin vest which he wore under his shirt.
Christopher Bush Sr. (1730?-1813) he and his descendents played an important role in Hardin County history. He is said to have been born in Holland about 1730 Íand came to America circa 1750, and to Kentucky at the end of the Revolutionary War. His daughter, Sarah, was to marry Thomas Lincoln [Abraham Lincoln's father] after Nancy Hanks died. Abe was about 10 years old when Sarah became his step-mother, and she is credited with instilling in him the desire to make something of himself. Bush Sr. was illiterate therefore it appears that Crutcher signed for him.
Samuel Stevenson - came to Elizabethtown in 1806. He taught school at Hardin Academy for about 2 years. Considered a good teacher, he was afterwards a merchant and served a term in the Ky. State Legislature.
Adam Miller - he was captured by Indians, along with his brother Christopher in 1782. The raiding party which captured Adam and Christopher consisted of Delawares and Shawnees. Adam was taken by the Delawares, Christopher was taken by the Shawnees. Both were taken to Indian towns northwest of the Ohio River. After 7 years Adam was exchanged and returned to his family.
Christopher Miller - was about 15 years old when captured by Indians. He lived with the Shawnee Tribe for 14 years. Being an active young man, he soon became habituated to the manners and customs and mode of life of the Indians; dressed as they did and spoke their language as his native tongue, and by many it was thought doubtful whether he ever would be returned to the whites. He was in the same tribe with young Tecumseh and they in their youth were friends and playmates. Miller has told of "many a wrestle with Tecumseh." Adam Miller was serving as a spy for General Anthony Wayne in June, 1794. In what is now Drake County, Ohio, Adam was dispatched with a party of spies to bring in an Indian prisoner for questioning. The party found three Indians in camp, preparing a meal. They set out to kill two of the Indians and capture the third. They succeeded in the plan and Adam discovered the prisoner to be his long-lost brother Christopher. Christopher sulked and refused to talk for several days, but on the promise of release, agreed to join Wayne's army as a spy. He kept his word. Wayne sent him on an important peace mission to the Indians, promising him a reward from the government. The following is an account of that mission. After the defeat of General St. Clair the Indians let loose upon the Northwestern Territory. General Washington was distressed and it frustrated his plans for the safety of the thinly settled country in the North-west and it was determined to have a sufficient army to be led by Gen. Anthony Wayne but Congress and delayed the campaign for nearly two years. On the 14th day of August 1794, Gen. Wayne, having all things in readiness to move on the Indians, Wayne, under the instruction of Washington, decided to give the enemy a chance for peace before attacking. They had to find the right man to carry the white flag, and Christopher Miller being lately returned from the Indians and speeaking their language, Armed with a flag and this message Miller set out for the Indian camp, arriving at nightfall. In a few minutes his arrival was known all over the entire camp. Then it was, "Kill the runaway, burn him". Miller, knowing the character of Indians, showed no signs of fear but in a loud and defiant voice, in their own tongue, told them that he had brought a flag of peace and as for burning him they had better be a little careful as the Black Snake, meaning General Wayne, had 8 of their warriors in prison and if he was not returned safely in three days that their 8 men would be shot. Immediately a pow-wow was held in which it was determined that Miller should be burned at the stake in the morning. But Tecumseh, a young Shawnee chief, and a friend of Miller, changed their minds. The Indians sent back their answer with Miller. If Gen. Wayne \waited for ten days and then sent Miller to them again they would give him their decision but if Wayne advanced they would give battle. Miller reached Gen. Wayne with the answer on the 16th day of August 1794. General Wayne rightly concluded that the 10 days asked for by the Indians was simply a scheme to get time and having everything in readiness immediately set out against the Indian camp. Wayne obtained a complete victory, the loss on both sides was considerable. The battle was fought on the 29th day of August 1794. Christopher Miller was in that engagement.
Daniel Waide - came to Elizabethtown a few years after 1800. He kept the tavern at THE SIGN OF THE LION, built by Major James Crutcher about 1798.This document is in very good condition for its age. 110. [OPERA] Tito Schipa (1888-1965) Italian tenore. In 1919, Schipa traveled to the United States, joining the Chicago Opera Company. He remained with the Chicago company until 1932, whereupon he appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1932 to 1935, and again in 1941. He also sang at the San Francisco Operabeginning in 1924. From 1929 to 1949 he performed regularly in Italy, including at La Scala, Milan and the Rome Opera. He returned to Buenos Aires to sing in 1954. In 1957, he toured the Soviet Union. Vintage signed album page, dated 1926. [MUSIC] Kenny Ascher [b. 1944] American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger who is active in jazz, rock, classical, and musical theater genres; in live venues, recording studios, and cinema production. 117. Julian Leonard Street (1879-1947) American author, born in Chicago. He was a reporter on the New York Mail and Express (later Evening Mail ) in 1899 and had charge of its dramatic department in 1900-01. His writings, characterized by a rather obvious but yet a genuine sense of humor. He made contributions to magazines. In 1915 he published a book on Theodore Roosevelt, called The Most Interesting American. He is credited with being the art critic who wrote that the painting exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show by Marcel Duchamp called Nude Descending a Staircase, resembled "an explosion in a shingle factory." Street moved to Princeton in the 1920s. The university houses his manuscript collection and a library is named after him there. TLS, 1924, 1p. 139. Lowell Thomas (1892-1981) American writer, actor, broadcaster, and traveler, best remembered for publicising T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). Thomas shot dramatic footage of Lawrence, then returned to America and began giving public lectures in 1919 on the war in Palestine, "supported by moving pictures of veiled women, Arabs in their picturesque robes, camels and dashing Bedouin cavalry". His lectures were very popular and audiences were large, and he "took the nation by storm" in the words of one modern biographer. He agreed to take the lecture to England, but only "if asked by the King and given Drury Lane or Covent Garden" as a lecture venue. His conditions were met, and he opened a series at Covent Garden on August 14, 1919. "And so followed a series of some hundreds of lecture–film shows, attended by the highest in the land". As a cousin of Robert E. Lee, his refusal to join the Confederates demonstrated the extent to which the war had divided families. Lee married the daughter of Francis P. 161. [Gen. Richard Delafield] 1880 document, New York, Receipt from Trustees of the Estate of Richard Delafield deceased, from Harriet [wife], Susan and Albert. Richard Delafield (September 1, 1798 – November 5, 1873) was a United States Army officer for 52 years. He served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy for 12 years. At the start of the American Civil War, then Colonel Delafield helped equip and send volunteers from New York to the Union Army. He also was in command of defenses around New York harbor from 1861 to April 1864. On April 22, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General in the Regular Army of the United States and Chief of Engineers. On March 8, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Delafield for appointment to the grade of brevet major general in the Regular Army, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on May 4, 1866, reconfirmed due to a technicality on July 14, 1866. He retired from the US Army on August 8, 1866. He later served on two commissions relating to improvements to Boston Harbor and to lighthouses. 185. [FRANCE] Philippe Berthelot (1866-1934) was an important French diplomat, son of Marcellin Berthelot. He was a republican (as opposed to monarchists and the Far-right leagues at that time). He entered the French diplomatic service in 1889 and joined the foreign office in 1904. In 1920, he became secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the rank of ambassador. After a violent campaign of Far-right leagues he was forced to step aside from 1922-1925 because of his involvement in the scandal opposing Banque Industrielle de Chine, controlled by his brother, and Banque d'Indochine (linked to Paul Doumer). 186. [FILM] Madge Bellamy (1899-1990) American film actress who was a popular leading lady in the 1920s and early 1930s. Her career declined in the sound era, and ended following a romantic scandal in the 1940s. In San Francisco in 1943, Bellamy was accused of assault with a deadly weapon for shooting (or shooting at) her wealthy lover Stanwood Murphy. The incident generated much publicity and effectively ended her already fading career. 190. [FRANCE] Marie-Louis Marcellus (1795-1865) French diplomat and writer. He published many works on Greece, Palestine and Chateaubriand. Through his involvement the Venus de Milo statue ended up in the Louvre Museum in Paris. News of the discovery of the statue took longer than normal to get to the French ambassador. The peasant grew tired of waiting for payment and was pressured into selling it to Nicholas Mourousi, Grand Dragoman of the Fleet, working as a translator for Sultan Mahmud II in Constantinople (present day Istanbul, Turkey). The French ambassador's representative, Vicomte de Marcellus, arrived just as the statue was being loaded aboard a ship bound for Constantinople and seized the statue and persuaded the island's chief citizens to annul the sale. Upon learning of the reversal of the sale, Nicholas Mourousi presumably had the chiefs whipped and fined. In 1821, Mourousi was executed by order of Sultan Mahmud II in front of the arsenal in Constantinople. This was amidst massive executions of Phanariote Greeks and the beginning of the Greek War of Independence. Offered here is a brief ALS, no date, 1p. In April 1893 he married Jeanne Pouquet. From 1901 to 1915, he collaborated with Robert de Flers on many works, including light and witty operettas or comédies de boulevard, many of which were great successes. He was a very close friend of Marcel Proust who found in him and his fiancée, Jeanne Pouquet, a model of the relationship between Robert de Saint-Loup and Gilberte in his famous novel In Search of Lost Time. 203. [FRANCE] Pauline Marie Armande Craven née de La Ferronnays (1808-1891) French author. Mrs. Craven's family life was depicted in the Le Récit d'une Soeur as especially tender and intimate. She suffered several severe bereavements in the years following her marriage. The Cravens lived abroad until 1851. In the same year Keppel Richard Craven died. His son's diplomatic career appeared unsuccessful. He stood unsuccessfully for election to Parliament for Dublin in 1852 after which he retired to private life. The family went to live in Naples in 1853. Mrs. Craven then began to write the history of the family life of the la Ferronays between 1830 and 1836. Its focus was the love story of her brother Albert and his wife Alexandrine. This book, the Le Récit d'une Soeur (1866, Eng. trans. 1868), was enthusiastically received and was awarded a prize by the French Academy. Strained circumstances made it vital that Mrs. Craven earn money by writing. Anne Sivrin appeared in 1868, Fleurange in 1871, Le Mot d'énigme in 1874, Le Valbriant (Eng. trans., Lucia) in 1886. Among her miscellaneous works are La Sceur Natalie Narischkin (1876), Deux Incidents de la question catholique en Angleterre (1875), Lady Georgiana Fullerton, sa vie et ses ceuvres (1888). Mrs Cravens charming personality won her many friends. She was a frequent guest of Lord Palmerston, Lord Ellesmere and Lord Granville. Before his death in 1884, her husband translated her correspondence with Lord Palmerston and her correspondence with the Prince Consort into French. She died in Paris on April 1, 1891. LL.D. (1853-1912) American inventor, geologist, anthropologist, and
ethnologist. While largely self-taught, McGee attended a rural one-room
schoolhouse north of Farley, Iowa during the four winter months from
about 1858 to 1867. He devoted his early years to reading law and to
surveying. He invented and patented several improvements on agricultural
implements. He was appointed geologist for the United States Geological
Survey (USGS) in 1881. In 1884 McGee authored the article Map of the
United States exhibiting the present status of knowledge relating to the
areal distribution of geologic groups for the USGS Journal. While with
the USGS, McGee travelled to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886 for the
purpose of studying the earthquake disturbances in its vicinity. McGee
was ethnologist in charge of the Bureau of American Ethnology from 1893
to 1903. In 1895, he explored the Isla del Tiburón, Gulf of California,
home of the Seri Indians. In 1904 he was chief of the department of
anthropology that organized the "Anthropology Days" at the 1904 Summer
Olympics / Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the 1904 World's Fair. In 1907
he was appointed a member of the Inland Waterways Commission by
President Roosevelt. His other prominent
positions were: acting president of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science (1897–1898); president of the American
Anthropological Association (1902–1912); and president of the National

217. [THEATRE] George Rignold (1839-1912) English-born actor, active in Britain and Australia. Rignold gained a reputation as an actor, playing in London the parts of William in Black-Eyed Susan and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. In 1869, he was part of the company at the Queen's Theatre, Long Acre. He then toured the United States (where women would fight over the good-looking actor) and Canada from 1875, where he made a great impression — a reference in The Atlantic Monthly in 1938 shows that memory of him persisted. He then toured in Australia. He spent a season playing Henry V at Drury Lane, where Staffordshire replicas were made of Rignold as the king on horseback. He then had a considerable career in Australia as a theatrical impresario and manager, often in conjunction with James Allison and F. H. Pollock. Rignold again toured the United States and then settled in Australia. He held the lease for Her Majesty's Theatre, Sydney when it opened 10 September 1887 and held it for seven years. Her career was international, and she appeared at leading theatres in both Europe and America. Scalchi helped to make history when she sang in the newly constructed New York City Metropolitan Opera's first ever staged work, Charles Gounod's Faust, which inaugurated the theatre on October 22, 1883. 223. [THEATRE & FILM] Matty (A.E. Matthews OBE) (1869-1960) English actor who played numerous character roles on the stage and in film for eight decades. Nicknamed "Matty", he was christened Alfred Edward Matthews. He was affectionately regarded by the British public over his extraordinarily long career. From World War II until his death he enjoyed renown as one of British cinema's most famous crotchety, and sometimes rascally, old men. Matthews' other most well-known films include The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Million Pound Note (with Gregory Peck), Inn for Trouble, The Magic Box, The Ghosts of Berkeley Square and Just William's Luck. 224. [RHODE ISLAND] a 1840 document signed by Isaac Peace Hazard (d. 1862) and Samuel Rodman (1800-1882) signed on verso. In 1835 Samuel Rodman bought the small mills at Rocky Brook in South Kingstown just to the north of Peace Dale, and there rebuilt a single, more substantial mill seat. Samuel Rodman's mills manufactured woolens and jean cloth for southern markets. Samuel's son Isaac entered into the family business by managing the Rocky Brook Store, selling dry goods and textiles to the mill hands and local neighborhood (see ad from the Narragansett Times, January 14, 1860). By this time Samuel Rodman had followed his wife Mary (nee Peckham) into the Wakefield Baptist Church, and Samuel had become a staunch supporter of the local temperance movement. Despite a long family association with the Society of Friends, Samuel's children were all raised as Baptists. Samuel's son was Isaac Rodman, a native son of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, was the highest ranking officer from Rhode Island to fall in the Civil War. MURDERED JOURNALIST 227. [FRANCE] Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) French journalist. In January 1914 Calmette, who had been editor of the newspaper Le Figaro since 1902, launched a campaign against Minister of Finance Joseph Caillaux, who had introduced progressive taxation and was known for his pacifist stance towards Germany during the Second Moroccan Crisis in 1911. During this campaign, which was orchestrated by Louis Barthou and Raymond Poincaré, Le Figaro published several letters from the Minister's private correspondence. Caillaux's second wife Henriette , fearing that the newspaper would also make public a love letter that showed how he was already having a relationship with her during his first marriage, entered Calmette's office on 16 March 1914 and shot him four times. Calmette died instantly. Caillaux had to resign his post the next day, but during a spectacular trial later that year his wife was acquitted. MARCEL PROUST dedicated Swann's Way, the first volume of his novel In Search of Lost Time, to Calmette 'as a testimony of deep and affectionate recognition'. In 1799, Pryme entered Trinity College, Cambridge, winning a scholarship there in 1800 and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1803. In 1804, he began studying law at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Bar in 1806, practising in London until health problems forced him to return to Cambridge in 1808. In 1816, Pryme began conducting lectures on political economy at Cambridge, the first teaching of such a topic at any English university, and in that same year his lectures were published as a book entitled A Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on the Principles of Political Economy. In 1828, he was made Professor of Political Economy by the university senate, although a chair was not established for the topic at Cambridge until just before his retirement. He was politically active, and successfully opposed parliamentary candidates sponsored by the Duke of Rutland, and eventually winning a seat in the House of Commons representing Cambridge as a Whig. Pryme worked hard in the parliament, pushing for university reform at Oxford and Cambridge until his poor health prompted his family to urge his retirement from parliament. He returned to Cambridge and bought an estate in Wistow while continuing to lecture and practice as a barrister on occasion. He died in 1868. His saving turnaround came about when Stevens was cast in the title role of the 1958 Blake Edwards-produced TV private eye series Peter Gunn. Though obviously imitating Cary Grant in the early episodes of this three-season hit, Stevens eventually developed a hard-edged acting style all his own. Her film career began in 1933 and the following year she introduced the melody of the song "Blue Moon" for the Clark Gable movie Manhattan Melodrama, only with different lyrics. Ross first achieved prominence appearing opposite Bing Crosby in the 1937 film Waikiki Wedding, in which she and Crosby sang "Blue Hawaii". In The Big Broadcast of 1938 she sang "Thanks for the Memory" with Bob Hope. She again teamed with Hope the following year to sing "Two Sleepy People" in the 1938 film Thanks for the Memory. Ross also introduced "The Lady's in Love with You" in the 1939 film Some Like It Hot featuring Bob Hope, which is not the 1959 comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis, although both films share the same name. From 1922 to 1939, Chase was a director of the New York-based Labor Bureau, Inc., an organization that furnished research, accounting, and other professional services to labor unions and cooperatives and published a newsletter.Chase and Frederick John Schlink were the founders of Consumers' Research. Schlink established Consumers' Research, Inc. They published the famous book Your Money's Worth(1927), a controversial exposé of the advertising and pricing practices used by manufacturers of consumer products. This work was widely distributed through the Book-of-the-Month Club In 1929, two months after the Wall Street crash, the organization began to publish its findings both as consumer pamphlets and in a regular bulletin that compared and assigned ratings to consumer products. These reports were eventually published in the Handbook of Buying. By 1930, membership in Consumers' Research, Inc. had reached twelve thousand.. 324. [ITALY] Giuseppe Bianchini (1704-1764) Italian Oratorian, biblical, historical, and liturgical scholar. Clement XII and Benedict XIV , who highly appreciated his learning, entrusted him with several scientific labors. Bianchini had contemplated a large work on the texts of the Bible, Vindiciae Canonicarum Scripturarum Vulgatae latinae editionis, which was to comprise several volumes, but only the first, in which, among other things, are to be found fragments of the Hexapla (cod. Chisianus), was published (Rome, 1740). Much more important is his Evangeliarium quadruplex latinae versionis antiquae , etc., 2 vols. (Rome, 1749). Among his historical works may be mentioned the fourth volume which Bianchini added to the publication of his uncle, Francesco Bianchini, Anastasii bibliothecarii Vitae Rom. Pontif. (Rome, 1735); he also published the Demonstratio historiae ecclesiasticae quadripartitae (Rome, 1752&endash;54). The chief liturgical work of Bianchini is Liturgia antiqua hispanica, gothica, isidoriana, mozarabica, toletana mixta (Rome, 1746). He also undertook the edition of the works of B. He enjoyed excellent reputation and had a long career. In 1894 he performed in the new opera of Leoncavallo "I Medici" at the Dal Verme in Milan and later in Naples in the role of Poliziano. In 1896 he was the first Schaunard in Genoa at the Politeama Genovese. In 1899 he took part in a very long tour in the United States. In 1901 he was cast in the first of the new Scala opera of Mascagni "The Masks" His career ended in 1917, the year of his death. SIGNED early Postcard Photograph [poor contrast]. 336. PEGGY STEWART (1923- ) American Actress. Her family moved to California in the mid '30s, where she made the acquaintance of character actor Henry O'Neill. Aware that Paramount Pictures was looking for a new face to play the part of Joel McCrea's and Frances Dee's daughter in Wells Fargo (1936), O'Neill recommended Stewart. The assignment led to numerous other roles for the teenaged actress, who by the end of 1940 was not only established in Hollywood but the wife of actor Don "Red" Barry (Stewart was also the sister-in-law of another actor, Wayne Morris). At about the time her marriage was breaking up in 1944, Stewart signed with Republic Studios, where, starting with Tucson Raiders (1944), she became resident leading lady for many of Republic's western stars. She also appeared in serials at Republic but preferred westerns because the shooting schedules were shorter and she was able to wear a more varied wardrobe. 360. Dr. Rhoda Bubendey Metraux (1914–2003), was a prominent anthropologist in the area of cross-cultural studies, specializing in Haitian voodoo and the Iatmul of New Guinea. She collaborated with Alfred Metraux, on mutual studies of Voodoo in Haiti. During World War II, Dr. Metraux headed the section on German morale for the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Rhoda Metraux was also an important professional and personal partner of Margaret Mead (1901–1978). Together with Mead, she wrote several books and many articles on major issues from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a contributing editor to Redbook magazine for well over a decade, both wrote many articles on contemporary issues that later formed the basis of a number of books including A Way of Seeing. Margaret Mead and Rhoda Metraux were in fact a close-knit professional team whose work greatly influenced American anthropology in the late 20th century. They shared a house in Greenwich Village in New York from 1955 to 1966 and an apartment on Central Park West from 1966 until Mead's death in 1978. 368. [FRANCE] Gustave François Xavier Delacroix de Ravignan (1795-1858) French Jesuit preacher and author. Educated in Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821. Entering a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame, where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds. Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits' strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time in France. Despite painful controversy with his superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of Paris, devoting himself to other works. 370. [ENGLAND] Richard Wilberforce, Baron Wilberforce, PC (1907-2003) Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in the House of Lords from 1964 to 1982. He was a great-great-grandson of William Wilberforce, the famous abolitionist, and son of a judge of the Lahore High Court. He grew up in India and attended Winchester College and New College, Oxford, and was later elected a Fellow of All Souls College. He was called to the Bar in 1932 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1954. He was first appointed to the bench in 1961 as a Chancery judge. Then in 1964 he was appointed to the House of Lords as a Lord Appeal in Ordinary, made additionally a life peer as Baron Wilberforce, of the City and County of Kingston-upon-Hull. He is the only judge in recent times to have been appointed to the House of Lords straight from the High Court Bench, without serving in the Court of Appeal. His decisions were known for being reserved and cautious. Wilberforce was Chancellor of the University of Hull between 1978 and 1994. 375. WILLIAM DANIELS (1927- ) American Actor. He in the long-running Broadway play Life with Father in 1945, Daniels. His confidence eroded by several years of relative inactivity, Daniels nearly turned down an opportunity to play Brick in a road company production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but the play's author Tennessee Williams insisted upon casting Daniels. In 1960, the actor was cast with George Maharis in the Edward Albee play The Zoo Story, which won him the Obie and Clarence Derwent Awards and led to such choice Broadway assignments as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and A Thousand Clowns. Much to his own amazement, Daniels found himself cast in a superhero-spoof sitcom, Captain Nice, in 1967, which fortunately wasn't on long enough to typecast him. The actor achieved recognition of a more positive nature for his role as Dustin Hoffman's obtuse father in The Graduate (1967) (he was all of ten years older than Hoffman). Daniels' role as John Adams in the 1969 Broadway musical 1776 resulted in another strong film showing when the play was transferred to celluloid in 1972. Reportedly as reserved and taciturn as his screen characters in real life, Daniels was perhaps ideally cast as the abrasive Dr. Mark Craig on the long-running (1982-88) TV drama St. Elsewhere. Her mother was the celebrated opera singer Berta Gester, who introduced her to many theatrical figures. These connections served her handsomely when she became a play broker in the late 1890s. Klauser helped get several Sardou plays produced here and was one of the first to take up cudgels for Ibsen. She also fought to achieve recognition for such American clients as Edward Sheldon and Langdon Mitchell, proving instrumental in the production of such plays as Salvation Nell and The New York Idea. 378. [FRANCE] Leon Dufourny (1754-1818) French architect whose works belong to the neo-classical movement of the late eighteenth century. Leon Dufourny was Commissioner of the French Republic to the King of Naples and made a trip to Sicily from 1787 to 1794 to study the ancient temples Greek. In 1796 Dufourny was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts and was also appointed Chairman of the Committee of the Fund and the Central administrative board of the Institute of France, and Nivôse Ventôse Year XII (1802). Around 1800, he seized the castle of Richelieu, confiscated during the Revolution as many emigrated, had been emptied of its furniture collections and then stripped of its materials - before being demolished - the rectangular tray mosaic marble and hard stone of a ceremonial table, completed after a carved wooden base, and preserved from the Louvre (Galerie d'Apollon); a color lithograph nineteenth century this exceptional furniture and a replica of his legs are kept at the Museum of Fine Arts Tours. Leading Authority on Byzantine Art399. Charles Diehl (1859-1944) French historian who was a native of Strasbourg. He was a leading authority on Byzantine art and history. He was member of the École française de Rome [1881-1883] and the École française d'Athènes. In 1910 he became a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. Diehl was the author of several influential books on Byzantine art and history. His treatise Byzance. 400. [FRANCE] Pierre Martin Victor Richard de Laprade (1812-1883), known as Victor de Laprade, was a French poet and critic. After completing his studies at Lyon, he produced, in 1839, a small volume of religious verse, Les Parfums de Madeleine. This was followed in 1840 by La colère de Jesus, in 1841 by the religious fantasy of Psyche, and in 1844 by Odes et poèmes. In 1845 Laprade visited Italy on a mission of literary research, and in 1847 he was appointed professor of French literature at Lyon. The Académie française, by a single vote, preferred Émile Augier at the election in 1857, but in the following year Laprade was chosen to fill the place vacated by Alfred de Musset. In 1861 Laprade was removed from his post at Lyon owing to the publication of a poem satirising the Second Empire (Les Musées d'Etat), and in 1871 was elected to the National Assembly as a conservative. 403. [MAINE] Henry Richards (1848-1949) He married Laura Elizabeth Howe, daughter of Samuel Gridley and Julia Ward Howe. They married in Boston on June 17, 1871. Reverend James Freeman Clark officiated the ceremony, which took place at Church of the Disciples Unitarian. In 1876, they moved to Gardiner, Maine. In 1900 the Richards Paper Company was consolidated with International Paper Company, which purchased the property in Gardiner. At this point Henry worked as an architect during the winters while his summers were spent carrying on a boys camp at a property they purchased on Great Pond in Belgrade, Maine. That camp was known as Camp Merryweather and it was the very first camp for boys opening in 1900. Henry was very involved locally, serving as chairman of the Gardiner school board, trustee of Gardiner Water District, director of the Public Library of Gardiner (he even designed the building), and a member of city council.
