MURDERED JOURNALIST 2. [FRANCE] Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) French journalist. In January 1914 Calmette, who had been editor of the newspaper Le Figaro since 1902, launched a campaign against Minister of Finance Joseph Caillaux, who had introduced progressive taxation and was known for his pacifist stance towards Germany during the Second Moroccan Crisis in 1911. During this campaign, which was orchestrated by Louis Barthou and Raymond Poincaré, Le Figaro published several letters from the Minister's private correspondence. Caillaux's second wife Henriette , fearing that the newspaper would also make public a love letter that showed how he was already having a relationship with her during his first marriage, entered Calmette's office on 16 March 1914 and shot him four times. Calmette died instantly. Caillaux had to resign his post the next day, but during a spectacular trial later that year his wife was acquitted. MARCEL PROUST dedicated Swann's Way, the first volume of his novel In Search of Lost Time, to Calmette 'as a testimony of deep and affectionate recognition'. Offered here is Calmette's called card which he signed and has written 3 lines. Fine. Below is his portrait & an illustration of the murder..........50-75

To MIss Mary C. Cooke at Great falls, Somersworth, NH
7. (RELIGIOUS FREEDOM) McLaurin F. Cooke - signed 3 page letter + address leaf, dated Dartmouth College, July 9, 1867, wriiten to his sister, MIss Mary C. Cooke at Great falls, Somersworth, NH. He is asking his sister to attend the commencement at Dartmouth; tells her of his activities. Interesting content. The main significance of this relates to about 12 years later [1859]. The Eliot School, Boston, in March, 1859, exhibited cruelty and intolerance such as had been rebuked by the State Superintendent in New York. Thomas J. Whall, a Catholic pupil, was ordered to repeat the Ten Commandments in the Protestant form; he declined, as his father had forbidden him to do so. The teacher sent for McLaurin F. Cooke, the second master, who flogged the boy on both hands for thirty minutes, declaring that he would whip him till he consented, for he had nothing else to do the whole forenoon. The inhuman teacher was tried for assault and battery, and the case was argued at considerable length, but Judge Maine held that the teacher had a right to inflict the punishment, and that it was not excessive or malicious.' One hundred Catholic children were expelled for refusing to submit to the intolerant system, and the monstrous decision of the judge sustaining the cruelty showed Catholics that no recognition of their religious rights could be expected from the State schools, which made open war on their religion, and that they must establish schools of their own. On the 21st of March, Bishop Fitzpatrick addressed a letter to the President and members of the School Committee, in which he stated in clear and convincing language the reasons why Catholics resisted the enforced use of the Protestant version of the Bible, the enforced learning and reciting of the Ten Commandments in their Protestant form, and the enforced union in chanting the Lord's Prayer and other religious chants. This masterly document, while it embarrassed the Board, turned the tide of public opinion, and, a few months later, there were elected as members of the School Committee, a Catholic priest and several Catholic laymen. One small hole on page 3 affects a couple of words [caused by the seal]. The letter is in excellent condition. Very uncommon.....400-600......Min. Bid $100

9. [WOMEN] Norma G. Zarky (1917-1977) was a prominent lawyer in Los Angeles, active in the fight for abortion rights and other civil rights. She co-authored a number of briefs with Rauh on civil rights cases during the 1950s. In 1954, during the McCarthy Era, the Department of Justice sought to fire her husband, Hilbert Zarky from his position with the Department, based primarily on Norma's very brief involvement with Communism when she was an undergraduate in the mid-1930s, along with such "crimes" as their belonging to a liberal book club and being at meetings attended by "suspect" individuals. After she and her husband filed numerous declarations from friends and prominent individuals regarding their loyalty to the United States, he was reinstated to his position. In 1961 she joined the law firm of Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp, where her husband worked, becoming the firm's first woman partner in 1968. At Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp, she practiced primarily in the field of entertainment law. Zarky was the first woman to serve as President of the Beverly Hills Bar Association and was a founding member of Women in Film. She was also a recipient of Women in Film's first Crystal Award, "given to honor outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work in film, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry. In 1979, Women in Film established The Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award, which "is presented to individuals who, like Ms. Zarky herself, have demonstrated enlightened support for the advancement of equal opportunity for all and devotion to the improvement of the human condition." 12. [FRANCE] Jerome Marie Champion of Cice (1735-1810) Ordained priest in 1761, he was Bishop of Rodez from 1770 to 1781 and Archbishop of Bordeaux from 1781 to 1801. He emigrated to England during the Revolution. After the Concordat of 1801, he was archbishop of Aix and Arles from 1802 to 1810. On his return from exile in 1802, Eugene immediately became acquainted with the archbishop and befriended him. Louis XVI selected Champion de Cice, in place of Barantin, as keeper of the seals; an office which, since the times of Cardinal de Biragnd, who had done so much harm to France (1570-78), no minister had ever held. This nomination displeased many of the extreme parties; but Champion maintained his position from 1789 till November, 1790, when he resigned it, having, meanwhile, addressed to the national assembly several memoirs on the royal prerogatives. Afterwards the archbishop of Bordeaux was obliged to go into foreign countries (being in danger of persecution), where he lived ten years; but this exile ended by his submission to pope Pius VII, after which he was appointed archbishop of Aix, by the first consul, and directed all his attention to the erection of charitable establishments and schools. He was the author of the draft declaration of rights in 24 articles which served as a basis for the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen of 1789. Offered here is a 1 page ALS, dated 1758, approx. 6.5 x 8.5 in. Not translated. Signed at beginning of last line. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (French: D_claration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen de 1789), set by France's National Constituent Assembly in 1789, is a human civil rights document from the French Revolution. The Declaration was drafted by the Abb_ SieyŹs and the Marquis de Lafayette, in consultation with Thomas Jefferson. Influenced by the doctrine of "natural right", the rights of man are held to be universal: valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. It became the basis for a nation of free individuals protected equally by the law. It is included in the beginning of the constitutions of both the Fourth French Republic (1946) and Fifth Republic (1958) and is still current. Inspired by the Enlightenment philosophers, the Declaration was a core statement of the values of the French Revolution and had a major impact on the development of freedom and democracy in Europe and worldwide. The Declaration, together with Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Bill of Rights, inspired in large part the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The last article of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was adopted on the 26 of August 1789 by the National Constituent Assembly, during the period of the French Revolution, as the first step toward writing a constitution for France. Inspired by the Enlightenment, the original version of the Declaration was discussed by the representatives on the basis of a 24 article draft proposed by the sixth bureau[clarify], led by Jerome Champion de Cice_. The draft was later modified during the debates. A second and lengthier declaration, known as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1793, was written in 1793 but never formally adopted. In 1877 he openly encouraged MacMahon to attempt a Bonapartist coup detat, but the marshals refusal and the death of the prince imperial foiled his hopes. He now played but a secondary rôle in the chamber, and occupied himself mostly with the direction of the journal L'Autorité, which he had founded. 50. [SPILLANE] Offered here is a TLS dated Feb. 6 [1956] to Elliott Graham from Mickey Spillane, signed Mickey. Mickey says at the end of this letter......."Send me some WWII flying books. Would you like to read the big final chapter of the new Mike Hammer book? If this doesn't tear the steeple off the church it ain't because I didn't try. Love, Mickey." Accompanied by a carbon copy of a Dec. 3, 1956 typed letter from Elliott Graham to Mickey. We believe that the pencil notation at the top was written by Mickey. Elliot Graham - was a publicist at E.P.Dutton who had worked on almost two dozen Spillane books. One of them, "The Girl Hunters," is dedicated to Mr. Graham. Mr. Graham recalled the time an editor had to restore each of 163 deleted commas in a Spillane manuscript before the author would let the book be published. And at Mr. Spillane's first appearance at a Dutton sales conference, the author steered the conversation away from matters literary. "He said if you ever get into a fight, punch the person hard, right in the nose, and all the blood and pain will take the starch out of him," Mr. Graham recalled. "After Mickey left, everybody said, 'What are we doing publishing that guy?'" The answer, of course, is that "publishing that guy" was like minting money. "I, the Jury," Mr. Spillane's first book, was the first mystery to sell more than six million copies in America. ...............200-300

55. [World War 2] Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Captain Louis W. McKeehan, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while attached to the Research and Development Section, Bureau of Ordnance, from the outbreak of hostilities in 1941 to March 1944. 158. Joseph Bowne Elwell (1873-1920), also known as J. B. Elwell, was an American bridge player, tutor, and writer during the 1900s and 1910s, prior to and during development of the auction bridge version of the card game. He is better known as the victim of an unsolved murder. Elwell learned the new card game "bridge"—now called bridge whist or straight bridge to distinguish it from later versions—in the course of establishing a young men's club in church, where its play was a popular activity. His fascination with the card game took over his life. In the early morning hours of June 11, 1920, Elwell was murdered with a gunshot to the head from a .45 automatic in his locked house in New York City. The murder has never been solved. A 1921 confession was determined to be the false utterance of a deranged man. The crime generated considerable publicity: The New York Times covered it almost daily until the end of July, the Chicago Tribune published eighteen articles, and the Los Angeles Times published twelve. This classic "locked room murder" was the inspiration for S.S. Van Dine's mystery novel The Benson Murder Case (1926), which introduced his famous fictional detective Philo Vance. 167. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. 168. Victor Saville (1896-1979) English film director, producer, and screenwriter. He directed 39 films between 1927 and 1954. He also produced 36 films between 1923 and 1962. As an independent producer he had purchased the film rights to A. J. Cronin's novel The Citadel. He was persuaded to sell them to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in return for the chance to produce the film and another big-budget adaptation, Goodbye Mr Chips (1939). Both films starred Robert Donat and were a great success in the USA as well as in Britain, providing Saville with a passport to Hollywood. After the war Saville continued directing films for MGM but eventually returned to Britain. Saville acquired production rights for Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer mysteries and produced a few features, though Spillane thought he as interested in doing so only to acquire the money to produce The Silver Chalice. He produced two final films in the 1960s, The Greengage Summer (1961), adapted from the novel of the same name, and Mix Me a Person (1962). Offered here is a TLS, 1954, 1p, to Mickey Spillane. 191. [ART] Walt Kuhn ( (1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European Modernism. Walt Kuhn is best remembered today for his key role in planning the Armory Show. Ironically, a man who was in the forefront of the modern movement and was seen as an advocate of adventurous new art in 1913 came to be labelled, because of his on-going commitment to representation, a conservative artist by future generations of art historians. Nevertheless, he holds a place in American art history as a skilled cartoonist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter. Although he destroyed many of his early paintings, his works that remain today are powerful and are a part of most major American art collections. His portraits of circus and vaudeville entertainers are some of the most memorable, confidently painted works of twentieth-century American art. They are reminiscent of commedia dell'arte actor portraits done by the French masters centuries earlier. The Tragic Comedians (1916) in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and The White Clown (1929) in the collection of the National Gallery of Art are intense, arresting images and are among his most respected paintings. Offered here is a 2-3/4 x 4-1/4 in. paper card on which several notes for himself - things to do. Writes: Circus opens Wed. Apr. 7 - closes Sun. May 9, etc. Not signed by Kuhn of course. Provenance: Kuhn Estate in Maine...................Min. Bid $75

After a period of mental struggle which he has described in Souvenirs de ma jeunesse, he was ordained priest in 1832. He became vicar-general of Orleans in 1861, professor of ethics at the Sorbonne in 1862, and, on the death of Barante, a member of the French Academy in 1867, where he occupied the seat formerly held by Voltaire. [1] Jim Henaghan (1911-1984) journalist, screenwriter, novelist and columnist. Henaghan, who worked for every major paper in Los Angeles, served as The Hollywood Reporter's Rambling Reporter in the early '50's. Always candidly outspoken and never one to cater to the industry's sacred cows, he wrote an article concerning Preston Sturges' escapades with a nurse while confined in a local hospital. Sturges, far from angry at the humorous reportage, called Charles Feldman and convinced him Henaghan's talents could be better put to use as a screenwriter. He worked as rewrite man at Paramount working on property owned by the studio, and was responsible for rewrites of what were to become "Sunset Boulevard" and "North to Alaska." It was said of him..."he could take 'Stagecoach,' put it on shipboard, and make it a good screeplay." Henaghan served as executive vp of John Wayne's Batjac Prod. for seven years. From 1960-76, he lived and worked writing feature articles on film and film personalities in Europe. Henaghan wrote five novels in the Jeff Pride series, published by Bantam Books and St. Martin's Press. He was a close friend of the actor Robert Walker. In her biography of Walker and Jones, Star-Crossed, author Beverly Linet quotes Walker's friend Jim Henaghan, who was not mentioned in official accounts of Walker's death, as saying that he was present at the time of the events leading to Walker's death. Henaghan stated that he stopped by Walker's house, where they played cards, and Walker was behaving normally. Walker's psychiatrist arrived and insisted that he receive an injection. When Walker refused, Henaghan held him down in order for the physician to administer it. Walker soon lost consciousness, and frantic efforts to revive him failed.

SOLD 307. [KENTUCKY PIONEER] Hardin County 1811 manuscript document, 1 Page, approx. 7.5 x 6 in. Court case John H. Geoghegan holds a note for $61. Charged are Edward Rawlings & Thomas Swan. Edward Rawlings, son of Stephen, was then a young man, after-wards Captain Rawlings. He was a slender, tall man, with but little surplus flesh, nearly all muscle, very active, and prided himself on his manhood and high sense of chivalric honor. The following is not related to this document but tells the Edward Rawlings story. "A warrant was placed in his hands to arrest "Bill Smothers," who was a rollicking kind of out-law, and frequently guilty of personal outrages. He infested the lower end of the county—now Daviess county, about 130 miles from the present Court House. Rawlings, by strategem and some help, arrested Smothers, tied him on a horse and started with him on a long journey for the jail. When on the road between Hartford and Hardin's settlement Smothers addressed Rawlings something in this manner "Ned, I have heard of you, and that you boast yourself to be much of a man. Is it fair if you are a better man than me? I promised to go with you untied, and if I prove to be the better man then let me go." Rawlings was too high strung and chivalric to stand that, im-
mediately dismounted and untied his prisoner, and at it they went.—and, like James Fitz James and Rhoderic Dhu, without a spectator to behold the contest, they were well matched. Their brawny arms encircled each other, and every power of muscle, sinew and bone was put in requisition and it would have afforded a rare chance for a special artist. The contest was long and doubtful. But Smothers, being as accustomed to
hardships and lying in the woods as the wild beasts, outwinded the Deputy and came off the victor, and accordingly went his way, and Rawlings considered that the matter had been settled by the code of honor, fist and skull, and was content with the issue. His fee in case of success would have been three shillings in tobacco at a penny ha-penny
per pound." Signed on the verso by Isaac Collett (1760-1837), of Baltimore co MD, who, having taken his rifle from home with him, became a soldier of the American Revolution. He was drafted in April 1781 in Berkly County, VA. He served in the VA cavalry (state militia) in and around Richmond, VA under General LaFayette through the surrender of Cornwallis at Little York. Early in 1784 Isaac Collett traveled to the western frontier of Kentucky, as noted in his Rev War pension statement, S30964 (National Archives), of Nov 1833, Henry co KY. His pension statement is very articulate, he was a teacher by profession, but suffered with a speech handicap of some sort after the war and couldn't teach. Also signed by Sam.
