This text has an interesting publishing history in America. Samuel Keimer, Benjamin Franklin's former employer, was commissioned to print this text. Keimer was commissioned by the Friends to reprint this book, a job too big for him to handle. Earlier in 1728 Franklin had left Keimer’s employ, set up his own shop, and convinced the Friends to turn the job over to him, and finished off the last forty-four and a half sheets (178 pages) of the book in a matter of weeks. Thus Franklin got his start by stealing a job from his former boss. This first American edition of Sewel's history of the Quakers, partially printed by Benjamin Franklin—the first project of his new press, had its predecessors. First published in Amsterdam in the Dutch language in 1717, an English translation was soon made for the author. Andrew Bradford proposed an American edition in 1723, underwritten by Philadelphia Quakers. There was some confusion, and the Overseers ended up hiring Samuel Keimer to do the printing, while at the same time, Bradford sent out to London for the edition. There were hurt feelings all around. What ended up being the second overall London edition came out in 1725. The present edition is the one commissioned from Keimer, who finished only with the assistance of Ben Franklin, who had previously been Keimer's foreman. Franklin relates the story in his autobiography.Sewell has also revised the text for this edition and added footnotes. This is the first comprehensive history of the Society of Friends. Sewel, a Dutch historian, spent 25 years researching and writing it, meaning to correct the misrepresentations of Croese's Historia Quakeriana (1695). He drew upon his personal correspondence with with Quaker leaders, as well as the works of Fox, Ludlow, and Clarendon. Included is material on the history of Penn's establishment of Pennsylvania. The DNB writes of Sewell's work: "Its accuracy has never been impugned, and it remains a classical authority." Sewell's history has the distinction of being the first book published by Benjamin Franklin and printed by him in Philadelphia in 1728..................8,000/10,000

To MIss Mary C. Cooke at Great falls, Somersworth, NH
40. (RELIGIOUS FREEDOM) McLaurin F. Cooke - signed 3 page letter + address leaf, dated Dartmouth College, July 9, 1867, wriiten to his sister, MIss Mary C. Cooke at Great falls, Somersworth, NH. He is asking his sister to attend the commencement at Dartmouth; tells her of his activities. Interesting content. The main significance of this relates to about 12 years later [1859]. The Eliot School, Boston, in March, 1859, exhibited cruelty and intolerance such as had been rebuked by the State Superintendent in New York. Thomas J. Whall, a Catholic pupil, was ordered to repeat the Ten Commandments in the Protestant form; he declined, as his father had forbidden him to do so. The teacher sent for McLaurin F. Cooke, the second master, who flogged the boy on both hands for thirty minutes, declaring that he would whip him till he consented, for he had nothing else to do the whole forenoon. The inhuman teacher was tried for assault and battery, and the case was argued at considerable length, but Judge Maine held that the teacher had a right to inflict the punishment, and that it was not excessive or malicious.' One hundred Catholic children were expelled for refusing to submit to the intolerant system, and the monstrous decision of the judge sustaining the cruelty showed Catholics that no recognition of their religious rights could be expected from the State schools, which made open war on their religion, and that they must establish schools of their own. On the 21st of March, Bishop Fitzpatrick addressed a letter to the President and members of the School Committee, in which he stated in clear and convincing language the reasons why Catholics resisted the enforced use of the Protestant version of the Bible, the enforced learning and reciting of the Ten Commandments in their Protestant form, and the enforced union in chanting the Lord's Prayer and other religious chants. This masterly document, while it embarrassed the Board, turned the tide of public opinion, and, a few months later, there were elected as members of the School Committee, a Catholic priest and several Catholic laymen. One small hole on page 3 affects a couple of words [caused by the seal]. The letter is in excellent condition. Very uncommon.....400-600......Min. Bid $100

42. [ART] Lucien Quarante (1860-1902) French. Painter and engraver, he was born in Metz (57) in 1860. He died in Paris in 1902. Student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the workshops of Cabanel and Henriquel-Dupont, he then worked under the towards Laguillermie. He made his debut at the 1887 Salon with a portrait after Franz Hals, which earned him an Honorable Mention. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and particularly reproduced the old masters. He was one of the good collaborators of the newspaper "l'Art". Offered here is an original etching, after a painting by Gustave Courtois. Title is PORTRAIT OF MADAME GAUTHEREAU. Image is approx. 12 x 7.5 in. plus large margins.
Madame Pierre Gautreau (the Louisiana-born Virginie Amélie Avegno; 1859–1915) was known in Paris for her artful appearance. Her renown made the papers throughout France, England, and the United States—from Maine to California. "Among the many important portrait studies in the Fine Arts Department [not one has been more discussed, nor is more remarkable, than this presentation of a well-known American Parisienne by Courtois. It might be said also that scarcely one is so beautiful in color. For, notwithstanding her strongly accentuated head, and the stately simplicity of her pose, Madame Gauthereau's beauty lies in the dazzling, slightly improbable, fairness of her skin and the rich auburn of her hair, to which the lustrous whiteness of her dress adds an admirable setting-off. All these blond tones are rendered by the painter with that brilliancy of technique which is so much more frequently found in Paris than in other cities. As if to demonstrate the range of his accomplishments, the painter supplements this "tour de force" with that serious study of a young girl on her death bed, which was, in some respects, his most noticeable exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1889. 62. Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Captain Louis W. McKeehan, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while attached to the Research and Development Section, Bureau of Ordnance, from the outbreak of hostilities in 1941 to March 1944. 80. [NAVY] JOSEPH HAROLD WELLINGS (1903-1988) Rear Admiral. By 1940, the war in Europe was already a year old, and Britain stood alone and besieged by Hitler’s war machine. During that summer, Wellings was sent to England as an observer of the British Home Fleet, with additional duty as assistant naval attaché in London. Interested in the operational aspects of the Royal Navy’s forces, he served as operations officer in HMS Rodney during the search for and sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941. Later he wrote an unpublished manuscript describing those events. Returning to the United States in June 1941, he served briefly on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations before a three-month assignment with the Fleet Training Division. Appointed commanding officer of USS Strong (DD 467), he prepared the ship for commissioning at the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, in August 1942. The Strong was involved in convoy operations in the Caribbean and Atlantic before participating in the Casablanca invasion. Assigned to the Pacific, the ship saw action in the Solomon Islands, where she was hit by a Japanese torpedo and sank on the night of July 4–5, 1943, off New Georgia. Wellings courageously stayed with his ship as she went down and was seriously injured when her depth charges exploded. As a result, he spent the next six months in the hospital. Wellings returned to destroyer commands in March 1944, when he assumed command of Destroyer Division One Hundred and Twenty. Transferred to Destroyer Squadron Two, he again saw action in the Pacific at Lingayen Gulf, the Philippine Islands, in January 1945. Five months before the war’s end, he returned to the United States to an assignment with the Bureau of Personnel. For the next year and one half he was involved in establishing policy for the postwar Naval Reserve and in transferring naval reservists to the regular navy. His mother was raised in Charleston, South Carolina and spent a year studying in London as a girl. His father founded the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company in Peace Dale, Rhode Island in 1802. Among his siblings was older brother Isaac Peace Hazard and younger brother Rowland G. Hazard. In 1844, Hazard became one of the original twenty three incorporators of the Rhode Island Hospital for the Insane, later Butler Hospital. Owing to his extensive record as an outspoken champion of the rights of the “insane poor,” Hazard was appointed by the state to conduct a survey of Rhode Island's poor houses and insane asylums. 85. [SPACE PHOTOGRAPHY] WILLENE WHISENHANT - early NASA photographer. Offered here is an original color vintage litho. photo of astronaut Alan Shepard. Whisenhant writes in ink below image "Shepard." Provenance: from the personal files of Willene Whisenhant, the photographer. WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. From 1962 to 1965, Whisenhant, who was a native of Texas, was the staff photographer for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During her tenure there she shot photos of astronauts, worked with CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite on a story about astronaut John Glenn, and photographed President John F. Kennedy. Growing up in Livingston, Texas, Willene Whisenhant probably couldn't have imagined sipping lemonade on Air Force One with the president. She most likely didn't think she'd be the first woman ordained into an all-male club. And the idea of being the first and only female photographer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), couldn't have possibly drifted into even her wildest daydreams. Later on, Whisenhant learned that President John F. Kennedy wanted her up front because, as he explained, when he first met his wife, then Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a struggling photographer and no one would give her a break. He therefore wanted Whisenhant to be front and center. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade.Fine.............100-150
MURDERED JOURNALIST 86. [FRANCE] Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) French journalist. In January 1914 Calmette, who had been editor of the newspaper Le Figaro since 1902, launched a campaign against Minister of Finance Joseph Caillaux, who had introduced progressive taxation and was known for his pacifist stance towards Germany during the Second Moroccan Crisis in 1911. During this campaign, which was orchestrated by Louis Barthou and Raymond Poincaré, Le Figaro published several letters from the Minister's private correspondence. Caillaux's second wife Henriette , fearing that the newspaper would also make public a love letter that showed how he was already having a relationship with her during his first marriage, entered Calmette's office on 16 March 1914 and shot him four times. Calmette died instantly. Caillaux had to resign his post the next day, but during a spectacular trial later that year his wife was acquitted. MARCEL PROUST dedicated Swann's Way, the first volume of his novel In Search of Lost Time, to Calmette 'as a testimony of deep and affectionate recognition'. Offered here is Calmette's called card which he signed and has written 3 lines. Fine. Below is his portrait & an illustration of the murder..........50-75

88. [WW 2 NAVAL] WILLIAM H.P. BLANDY (1890-1954), known to friends as "Spike", was an admiral in the United States Navy during World War II. He participated in the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico in 1914 and served on board the battleship USS Florida (BB-30) (BB-30) with the British Grand Fleet during World War I. During World War II he was Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance from 1941 to 1943. Here he had a controversial role in the infamous torpedo scandal involving the initially practically useless Mark 14 torpedo, and the long delays incurred on the work testing and launching the electric Mark 18 torpedo. In December 1943 he became Commander, Group 1, Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, and commanded the pre-invasion bombardment group during the campaign for Iwo Jima. Offered here are 2 document from the personal files of Louis W. These are: (1) Nov. 10, 1942. McKeehan has written at bottom "Mines Development". (2) Oct. 22, 1943 Bureau of Ordnance Circular Letter, 4pp. - printed, signed Blandy in type. After the war he commanded Joint Task Force 1 during the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Offered here is a March 21, 1946 one page memo about Operation Crossroads. Operation Crossroads was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946. The purpose of the tests was to investigate the effect of nuclear weapons on warships. Not ink signed by Blandy. From the personal papers of Louis McKeehan. VG..............80-120

143. [WORLD WAR I] William Jason Mixter, M.D. (1880-1958) prominent American surgeon. By the early 1930s, Mixter was considered to be one of the nation's leading experts in spinal surgery, and he went on to become the first chief of the neurosurgery department at Massachusetts General Hospital. He served in the U. S. Army in both world wars. In 1934, at the age of 54, Mixter and Joseph S. Barr published an article on the intervertebral disc lesion in the New England Journal of Medicine. That article fundamentally changed the popular understanding of sciatica at that time, and for this work Mixter is generally credited by his contemporaries as being the man who best clarified the relation between the intervertebral disc and sciatica. Mixter and Barr's landmark report helped to establish surgery's prominent role in the management of sciatica at the time. Over the next few decades, discectomy surgery increased in popularity tremendously, and some refer to that period as the "dynasty of the disc." Offered here are 5 items circa 1915 while Dr. Mixter was serving overseas. Two are documents plus a photo of him plus 2 other small photos. VG................100-150

153.[NORTH CAROLINA] Robert Rice Reynolds (1884-1963) was a Democratic US senator from North Carolina from 1932 and 1945. Almost from the outset of his Senate career, "Our Bob," as he was known among his local supporters, acquired distinction as a passionate isolationist and increasingly as an apologist for Nazi aggression in Europe. Smith," whose scurrilous publication The Cross and the Flag "violently assailed the United States war effort and America's allies." One of Rowland Hazard's responsibilities was selling the company's prodent winters in New Orleans from about 1833 to 1842 to sell goods that included cotton bagging cloth, pre-cut garments, low-priced shoes, and raw "Negro cloth" for use by African-American slaves. The activity that Hazard considered "as the greatest effort of his life" (according to his granddaughter) began when he was in New Orleans on business in the winter of 1841. After he learned that a free African-American man from Newport, Rhode Island was in custody in Louisiana as an escaped slave, his investigations found that many free African-Americans were being detained under the assumption they were escaped slaves. He worked with Jacob Barker, then a New Orleans lawyer, to obtain freedom for nearly 100 people being held as slaves. The action later led to charges being filed against several public officials who were responsible for the illegal detentions. His involvement with abolitionist causes and in the Republican Party eventually caused his company to lose favor with its markets in the southern United States. This helped to prompt the Peace Dale mills' transition from making cheap cotton products to selling higher quality woolens. Hazard retired fromucts to planters in the southern United States, particularly Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. He sp the textile business in 1866 and invested in the Union Pacific Railroad. After Union Pacific fell into financial disarray and became a party to the Credit Mobilier scandal of 1872, Hazard spent much time dealing with the company's financial affairs. 178. [FRANCE] Jean-Barthélémy Hauréau (1812-1896) French historian and writer. Born in Paris, he was educated at the Louis-le-Grand and Bourbon colleges in his native city, and won high honours at his public examination. After graduating he became a journalist, and soon was a contributor to several democratic papers: La Tribune, Le National, Le Droit, and La Revue du Nord; at Le National, he was praised by Théophile Gautier as the "tribune" of romanticism. At the age of twenty he published a series of apologetic studies on the Montagnards &emdash; in later years, regretting his youthful enthusiasm, he attempted to destroy the studies. In 1838 he took the chief editorship of the Courrier de la Sarthe and was appointed librarian of the city of Le Mans , which position he retained until 1845, when he was dismissed on account of comments of his on the daring speech of the Mayor of le Mans to the Duke of Nemours. He returned to Paris and once more became one of the editors of Le National. At this time he seemed destined for a political career, and after the revolution of February 24, 1848 was elected to the National Assembly; but close contact with revolutionary men and ideas cooled his old ardour. Throughout his life he opposed innovation, not only in politics and religion, but also in literature. After the coup d'état he resigned his position as director of the manuscript department of the Bibliothčque Nationale , to which he had been appointed in 1848, and refused to accept an administrative post until after the fall of the empire. Having acted as director of the national printing press from 1870 to 1881, he retired, but in 1893 accepted the post of director of the Fondation Thiers. He was also a member of the council of improvement of the École des Chartes. From the time of his appointment to the Bibliothčque Nationale up to the last days of his life he was engaged in making abstracts of all the medieval Latin writings (many anonymous or of doubtful attribution) relating to philosophy, theology, grammar, Canon law, and poetry, carefully noting on cards the first words of each passage. He worked as rewrite man at Paramount working on property owned by the studio, and was responsible for rewrites of what were to become "Sunset Boulevard" and "North to Alaska." 225. [PHOTOGRAPHY] circa 1941 photograph [MG 85714] of Lana Turner, approx. 13 x 10 in. This was taken by Eric Carpenter (1909-1976) who worked at MGM, aside from a couple of short breaks, from 1933 to the 1960s. Elevated from office boy, he succeeded Virgil Apger as Bull's assistant and continued in that capacity until he got his union card. He finally became a portrait photographer at precisely the moment when MGM was cultivating a new crop of stars--Lana Turnerr, Esther Williams and the popular team Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. A decade later Carpenter photographed Marilyn Monroe when she made 'The Asphalt Jungle' (1950). He also worked as a uncredited still photographer on many great films including 'The Wizard of Oz' for which he did some wonderful Kodachrome stills, 'Singing in the Rain,' 'The Swan'--Grace Kelly's last film--'Gigi', 'Ben Hur,' and 'Please Don't Eat the Daisies' with Doris Day. With his spirited and beautiful portraits, Carpenter quickly became the favorite photographer of the studio's rising young stars, like Ava Gardner and James Craig, among others. His rapport with Lana Turner began when she signed with MGM and lasted up to her departure from the studio in the late fifties. Carpenter was responsible for the most of her torrid, memorable gallery portrait sittings. His photographs of her are lush and immediate in dazzling whites and sophisticated, plungingly deep backs. More dynamic than almost any of the other glamour portraits of the era, their effect recalled the Harlow portraits and and anticipated the ones of Monroe at Fox in the early fifties--acres of white fur, opalescent skin, poses inviting by thier ease. Not signed of course. Creased at bottom right corner & light off-setting caused by printed label on back but overall VG...............200-300

241. [SPACE] WILLENE WHISENHANT (1930-2015) she was a renowned photographer who was the first female photographer for NASA. That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Offered here is a lithograph picture of Deke Slayton one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, and became NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations, and was responsible for NASA crew assignments.. In 1808 he was pressed into the Royal Navy, serving in the guardship HMS Namur at Sheerness. Discharged on health grounds in 1814, he then made a voyage to China in 1815 on the East Indiaman Warley and returned with many sketches. An accident forced Stanfield to leave active service, but during his voyages he had acquired considerable skill as a draughtsman. In August 1816 Stanfield was engaged as a decorator and scene-painter at the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square, London. Along with David Roberts he was afterwards employed at the Coburg theatre, Lambeth, and in 1823 he became a resident scene-painter at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where he rose rapidly to fame through the huge quantity of spectacular scenery and (moving) dioramas which he produced for that house until 1834. Rare Letter of Russian Interest
255. [RUSSIA] Shapurji (Shapur) Saklatvala (1874-1936) Lawyer and Labour and Communist politician; MP for Battersea. Born into a wealthy Bombay family, Saklatvala was reluctant to join the family business, choosing instead to be a welfare worker in the slums of Bombay. After concerns were raised by the Raj about his outspoken nationalism, his family sent him to oversee the Tata offices in Manchester. Before departing he contracted malaria. He recovered at a health spa in Britain where he met Sally Marsh, a hotel waitress who he married in 1907. The couple moved to London where he joined the Labour party in 1909. In his first speech he agitated ministers by fearlessly waging a one-man campaign on parliament with his opening statement: "No Britisher would for a moment tolerate a constitution for Great Britain if it were written outside of Great Britain by people who were not British", making it clear that he saw his position as an opportunity to speak on matters of the empire. He was also among the few members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) to serve as an MP. In 1934 he visited the Soviet Union to tour the Union's Far Eastern republics, whose governance he compared favourably to that in British India. During that tour he suffered a heart attack but recovered.Offered here is a 1934 TLS written from Moscow to his brother Phirose, Honourary Consul for Persia, The Persian Consulate NYC. Rare 1821 Choctaw Indian
256. [INDIANS] Rare 1821 printed US Senate document related to Silas Dinsmoor and the Choctaw nation of Indians. Silas Dinsmoor (1766-1847) was an appointed U. S. Agent to the Cherokee (1794–1798) and to the Choctaw (1801–1813). He later served as a surveyor in Alabama before eventually retiring to Boone County, Kentucky. Born in Windham, New Hampshire, Silas Dinsmore was part of a large group of inter-related families who settled in southern New Hampshire in the early 1700s. Through his mother, Martha McKeen, he was related to Joseph McKeen, the first president of Bowdoin College in Maine. He was also a first cousin of Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Silas worked his way through Dartmouth College by teaching, a profession he continued to practice after his graduation. At nearby Atkinson Academy he taught a newly formed co-educational class of students, opening up the chance for young ladies to learn Logic, Greek, and Rhetoric - topics normally reserved for male students. In 1793, Silas traveled to Philadelphia to look for a position with the government. He was offered the appointment of United States Agent to the Cherokee by President George Washington, a job that would last the next four years. In that capacity, Dinsmoor was expected to keep peace between the Native Americans and white settlers, serve as treaty commissioner, and introduce "civilization" to the Indians. This last task meant that he was to attempt to coax the males of the tribe to take up farming which was traditionally the occupation of females, and to teach the women to plant cotton, spin, and weave textiles. He spent much of his time at Tellico Blockhouse (in present-day Tennessee). As the agent, Dinsmoor was a witness to the First Treaty of Tellico, signed in 1798 between the U. S. Government and tribal leaders, which signed away land in eastern Tennessee. At the time, Silas wrote to his brother, "the Cherokees know the worth of their land too well to sell it for a song or anything under the value." In 1799 he accepted the job of purser on the naval frigate, USS George Washington. In that capacity he sailed with the ship on a historic mission, it being the first U. S. warship to enter the Mediterranean Sea. Under the command of William Bainbridge, the frigate was sent to Algiers with trade items and tribute for the Barbary pirates. When they arrived in Algiers, the Dey ordered the Americans to carry (under the flag of Algiers) an ambassador, several slaves, and exotic animals to Constantinople for the Sultan of Turkey. Returning to the states, Dinsmoor was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson as Agent to the Choctaw and he proceeded to the small outpost of Washington, Mississippi Territory, located at the southern end of the Natchez Trace. It was presumed he would carry out a similar set of tasks as before, with the added expectation of encouraging the Choctaw to cede large sections of their land to the government. Again, the Native Americans were less than willing to give up their most valuable lands. The Treaty of Mount Dexter, signed in 1805, which sold away more than four million acres of Choctaw land in southeastern Mississippi and parts of Alabama, angered President Jefferson because he had wanted the more valuable lands along the Mississippi River. Dinsmoor also witnessed the Treaty of Fort St. Stephens of 1816 and the Treaty of Doak's Stand of 1820. By this time, though, he was no longer serving as agent. In 1811 Dinsmoor found himself embroiled in a controversy with Andrew Jackson and by 1813 he was looking for a new government post. The controversy began with reports from the Natchez region that slaves were being encouraged to run away by traders from Tennessee. Dinsmoor was asked to protect the property of the local planters and he began instituting an often ignored requirement that anyone traveling the Natchez Trace carry papers with them proving their ownership of any enslaved people they claimed. Jackson refused to do so and became quite furious when he heard the rule was being vigorously enforced, at one point threatening to arm his slaves on his next time through, kill Dinsmoor, and burn the agency house to the ground. Though he never found the right moment to carry out his threat, his missives to the War Department may have had something to do with Dinsmoor being replaced in 1813. Fine condition...............200-300

265. Group of 22 documents from the papers of Ross R. Mowry. These date 1920-1930. We have not researched any of the names. Mowry has signed many of them. Newton attorney Ross Rutledge Mowry was a member of the Newton Public Library board from 1912 to 1924, perhaps not surprising given that later in life he listed his hobby as reading. Born in Clear Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa, March 5, 1882, he was the youngest of ten children born to John E. and Louisa (Wilkins) Mowry, natives of Pennsylvania. Young Ross spent his youth on the home place assisting with the farm work until he was 15. He attended Oak Ridge School, and graduated from Baxter High School with the class of 1900. He then entered the State University at Iowa City, from which he was graduated in the law department in 1903. He began his law practice at Baxter, where he remained one year. In 1904, he removed to Newton where he formed a partnership with another Baxter High School graduate, John E. Cross, which lasted until 1910. According to one contemporary source, “Mr. Mowry has figured more or less prominently in local legal affairs all the while, being regarded as a very strong young lawyer and he has been very successful in all his legal work in the local courts.” In 1910, Mowry was the Republican nominee for Jasper County Attorney; he was elected, re-elected in 1912, and served from 1911 to 1915. Mowry was married to Mary Edith Mathews (1878-1949), daughter of John L. Mathews, a former Newton Public Library trustee, on September 15, 1908. They were the parents of two daughters, Esther Virginia Mowry and Gertrude Ellen (Mrs. William) Spaulding.[16] Mowry subsequently practiced his profession in Newton in 1914-16, 1917-24, and 1932-38. In 1916-17, he was Assistant Attorney General of Iowa in the office of Attorney General George Cosson.[18] From 1924 to 1932 Mowry was U. S. Attorney under Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. In 1938, he was elected State Senator. He was re-elected in 1942. Mowry was a past member of the Baxter City Council, and a past member of the Newton Park Board. He was a member of the Jasper County, 6th District, and Iowa State Bar Associations. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Fraternally, Mowry was a member of Newton Lodge No. 59, Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons; the Knights of Pythias; and the Modern Woodmen of America, for which he was past state counsel. He was also a member of the Wittemberg Grange. At the time of his death, his colleagues in the Iowa Senate considered Mowry “probably the greatest historian living in Jasper County.” He passed away on September 28, 1957, and is buried in Newton Union Cemetery..................Min. RARE 1962 PHOTO OF JOHN F. KENNEDY
284. [NASA] this rare vintage phoptograph is of President John F. Kennedy speech,
"We choose to go to the Moon", formally the Address at Rice University on the Nation's Space Effort, was a September 12, 1962. The purpose was to bolster public support for his proposal to land a man on the Moon before 1970 and bring him safely back to Earth. The speech resonated widely, although there was disquiet about the cost and value of the Moon-landing effort. Kennedy's goal was realized posthumously, in July 1969, with the Apollo program's successful Apollo 11 mission. This photo was taken by Willene Whisenhant,, and she was signed "W" in ink bottom right.
That same day, the president asked his men to take the photographer up to Air Force One and give her some lemonade. Provenance: directly from Willene "Whilly" Whisenhart before she died in Maine. Extremely rare! Fine.............Min. Bid $500

287. [ART] Louis Bosa (1905-1981) Born in a small town near Venice, Italy, Louis Bosa became a genre, figure, and landscape painter who exhibited widely, and was also a much-respected art teacher. Amidst the growing trends of modernism, especially Abstract Expressionism, he kept to his own unique style of apolitical, witty character studies and subjects of humor and human pathos. For art historians, his work has been difficult to categorize, which has led to him getting less attention than many of his contemporaries, especially those who had sophisticated public-relations machines. Also, he was such a unique character—ever telling jokes and far-fetched stories—that the focus on him tended to be on his quirky personality rather than the seriousness of his art. Original 1953 lithograph, signed in the plate, approx. 12 x 8.5 in. VG..............50-75

298. [ART] MARGARETT SARGENT (1892-1978) ORIGINAL unsigned iwatercolor drawing, sheet size approx. 18-3/4 x 12-1/4 in. Very good condition. In the exhibition of her work in NYC at the gallery that handled her estate there were 19 works on paper and all but 3 were unsigned which is NOT unusual for her works on paper. MARGARETT SARGENT, American artist. An unconventional member of an aristocratic Boston family and fourth cousin of the artist John Singer Sargent, she was an artist who rebelled against both the social conventions and artistic tastes of her class and time. Student of Geolong school-of-Paris Modernists as Matisse, Picasso and the German Expressionists. She began to exhibit in 1916, eventually participating in as many as than 30 shows. She was a great beauty who challenged her conservative family to pursue a career in art. Lincoln Kirstein, founder of the New York City Ballet, gave her a solo exhibition at the Harvard Society for Contemporary Art, in a season that included Maurice Prendergast, Buckminster Fuller Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Calder performed his famous miniature circus at Sargent's Boston home. Bernice Abbott photographed her, Marie Laurencin painted her daughter's portrait. She met Edith Wharton and Gertrude Stein, and collected works by Derain, Vlaminck, De Chirico Degas, Gauguin, Vuillard, Villon and Toulouse-Lautrec. She carried on affairs with lovers of both sexes, including the writer Jane Bowles, and also suffered from severe bouts of manic-depression and alcoholism. At the same time, Sargent was married to a wealthy Bostonian and had four children by him. Francoise Gilot (artist and mother of two children by Picasso) wrote that she was like Zelda Fitzgerald who struggled to be freed from the constraints imposed on them by society. An exhibition of her work was held at the Davis Art Museum (Wellesley College). A major book on her life and art has been published and the exhibition traveled from the Davis Museum to New York for exhibition at the Berry-Hill Galleries. This drawing had been in storage since her death in 1978. Because of the exhibitions, the book, and several articles [including a major article in the Boston Globe], there is at present, more than a little interest in this artist, which is sure to grow. VG.
